A game where you must stretch your vocabulary abilities to win. It forces the clue giver to search for descriptive words that are so nuanced they can differentiate between the seemingly equal. But it is not simply a game of vocabulary as there is also a social aspect that cannot be overlooked. Playing this game introduces interesting interpretive styles between the clue giver, the guessers and also the group-think of the crowd. We played this game with 8 people, and it was easy enough to quickly explain, but it was also engaging enough to keep us interested. I was so excited to have played this game for the first time with my family members this past Saturday, at our Halloween game night party that I hosted. There are just so many awesome things about 'Hues and Cues,' especially being that it really only takes about a half hour to play, in addition to having the option of involving the whole family (as the game permits about 3-10 players.) The setup is so easy and fun to learn, and it will have everyone smiling in seconds, just as it did for my family and I! 'Hues and Cues' is certainly a new favorite game of ours, especially as we experienced how fun it is to "trick" other family members when it comes to them attempting to guess and mark the specific color hue you are thinking of on the game board. Every shade of green becomes grass or an avacado. It says age for gameplay is 5 but there is no way anyone under a teenager is going to be creative or thoughtful enough to come up with meaningful cues. Even for adults, unless you are an artist and know 40 words for every shade on the color spectrum and that's like your thing, given the limitations of the rules, you just end up saying the same cues for various hues and waiting for someone to get lucky enough to guess the color closest to what you are trying to have them guess. There is one person who must describe a color using one word, then two words, and all others in the room must guess which square of color that person is describing. This is such a fantastic game of color perception, reading other people, intuition, and sometimes luck. This game is wonderful for adults and teenagers, and can be challenging for all ages because you need to describe specific tints and shades of colors without saying the color's name. You then try to get all the players to guess the color you describe. So say your color is green. Your first clue is one word. You could say apple, most people might choose red, and they would put the game piece on that color, but then you give a second clue of two words and could say Granny Smith, which would indicate a green apple. Your team mates would then place another game piece on their second choice of color. People sometimes can be hesitant playing a game where people can make fun of them for not knowing something. Guessing a color was just that, a guess. While I liked this game, I had one person that did not. They felt like it was a waste of time and said board games should challenge you on knowledge and skill. They didnât feel as though this game provided those elements. I felt that this game was just that, a GAME. I was so excited to try out Hues and Cues because I love colors and colorful things. This did not disappoint! It is a simple game (almost similar to battleship or code names) where you draw a card with a specific color from the board and you give clues (first one word and then two words) to try and get the other players to guess the color, or as close as they can to it. I was shockingly surprised at how well the kids did! They gave such awesome clues like salmon and pale mint. They totally kicked my butt (my clue was watermelon and half the players thought the color was green and half thought it was redâŚ. and it was pink). âşď¸ Even Jordy could play with the others and adults. This was a winner for sure! Easy to learn and play, but still challenging and exciting.
This game was a hit with everyone! It was a super simple concept to pick up on, didnât take much time to set it up, and doesnât have a lot of pieces to keep track of. The score board is built into the board which is convenient. The board is fairly large so youâll need a decent sized area to play. Itâs a great game for all ages because of the simplicity. The game moves along fairly quickly so nobody gets bored. We had some good laughs based on one single word! This is definitely a game weâll play again. Iâm not sure that it's one you could play over and over as I think the same descriptive words are likely to be repeated. Itâs probably more like a game you could pull out every few months, hence the loss of one star.
