Bombproof tent

I used this tent for 3 week long mountaineering traverses in the Coast Mountains of BC. This is a solid tent that I feel comfortable taking into the alpine yet it is still extremely light. The fly offers excellent protection from wind and rain and can also be kept wide open in nice weather. Very well made, nice features, easy to set up. Seems fairly durable.

Excellent 1 person sanctaury!

Easy to set up and room enough for both me and my gear. Plenty of foot room for me at 6'1". Ergonomic single handed operation of the doors and excellent ventilation. Super high quality materials and construction. I'm very happy with this purchase! I've been searching for a while for the perfect tent to use on my Appalachian Trail through hike attempt in 2024/5 - I've finally found it.

Great tent, super easy and fast to pitch

I recently took my Mid 1 on a 7-day, 114-mile section hike of the Appalachian Trail from PA through NJ in August. It rained five of the seven days and the Mid 1 was awesome. Zero water inside the tent from the rain and plenty of room. One night in PA, the tent held up just fine through a night of very heavy thunderstorms and wind. On the last night in NJ, I had to quickly set up the tent due to a big swarm of mosquitoes and I had the tent up in under 2 minutes. Mosquitoes outside the tent, me inside the tent - perfect!Like all single wall tents, you will get condensation in certain situations but that's the price of choosing a single wall tent (and camp location).Overall, a great tent for the weight. Worth the money - super excited to use this a lot going forward.

It rained so hard a nearby creek flashed. The mid kept me dry all night.

Let me start out by saying that it's taken me a few trips to review this shelter because I bought it in summer and hot weather just isn't where it shines. If you are just looking for something to keep the mosquitoes off when it's 100 degrees out, you will be a sad overheated potato. Now let's say hypothetically that you're a crazy person and you would like to be down in the Grand Canyon while Tropical Storm Hilary hits and not wake up to a bunch of soggy gear, or something along those lines. Congratulations! Your search is over. It actually rained so hard one night that Tapeats Creek flashed overnight a few yards below my park-ordained dirt patch, but in the morning I was still dry and so was all my stuff. Congratulations! Your search is over. It actually rained so hard one night that Tapeats Creek flashed overnight a few yards below my park-ordained dirt patch, but in the morning I was still dry and so was all my stuff. Expectations thoroughly exceeded! The bathtub floor is a fantastic design, and the vestibule, while floorless, is large enough to do a solid job of protecting gear from the elements when paired with a groundsheet. Even a stray lizard (not included with purchase, gotta find your own lizard) knew a good thing when it saw one and kept trying to climb the outside wall.In all seriousness, this shelter is light as heck and bomber when you get the pitch down. Allow a little time to get it dialed in the first few tries, or you're still going to be fiddling with it while the weather makes like a honey badger and does whatever it wants. And like most ultralight gear, it takes a little babying. I made the mistake of packing it near the bottom of my pack the first trip I used it on, and when I took it out of its storage bag the mesh had two tiny holes that I think came from being pressed hard against one of its own zippers. Store it near the top of your pack if you can.At any rate, no longer shall I scour Google Earth for rocks along my routes that look like they're overhung in case of inclement weather - for the weight, it's worth it to have this along any time the forecast threatens sky water!

Light and easy to set up
18 August 2023

The Mid 1 was lightweight and pretty easy to set up. I like the zipper fly better than some other brands closures, and the fly comes a little lower to ground, too which is better. I think a couple more inches would be even better to keep out wind and rain. The bathtub floor could be taller, it collapses and items roll out onto the screen surround and earth. It would be better to come with strings all around as they are needed. Seemed pretty waterproof through it's first major storm! I stayed dry.

Lightweight, only good in warm weather
22 September 2023

Originally I reviewed it to be good in weather but that was in warm summer temps. However, I just took the tent to the Windrivers in Wyoming on a 1 week backpack. I had it properly pitched (I just reread the directions sent by Hyperlite) and had added guy lines to all the stretch cord points, as directed. The vents were open as much as they would stay (mostly they flap shut in rain.) Since it rained, I did not have the front door open as suggested but the fly doesn't come very close to the earth, and the wind was blowing in. It had so much condensation I was totally soaked in the mornings, and woke up freezing almost every night and it was just 20 - 33 degrees each night, not really that cold. I had a breathable SOL bivy also, which has never gotten soaked like this ... MoreOriginally I reviewed it to be good in weather but that was in warm summer temps. It had so much condensation I was totally soaked in the mornings, and woke up freezing almost every night and it was just 20 - 33 degrees each night, not really that cold. I had a breathable SOL bivy also, which has never gotten soaked like this before. I slid down a couple nights and the tent was coated with frost and my feet were cold. I have backpacked all over the world and have not ever been this cold. Customer service wrote back and said to leave the door open at night and the wind blowing in. However it was raining 2 nights and I could not leave the door open. I feel they do not stand behind their products as stated. I have much better performance from my 12 year old Big Agnes 1 person, and in that I can carry a lighter bag and still be warm and dry. They replied it is not a 4 season tent; but I feel September 11-16 is not winter camping and that it is actually only a summer mild weather tent. Very disappointed. I really like my Porter Pack and expected the tent to perform better, especially since it is advertised with photos from AK, which is often cold, rainy and wet. Also the space is nice except it is more to heat with your body, also making for a cold night. ultimately not worth it at all.

I really wanted to love this tent, it replaced my 5 year old $100 dollar beater Amazon tent. Unfortunately, this tent was a complete let down. I used it for 11 days on the Sierra High Route (SHR). I'm glad it was only 11 days because I seriously doubt this tent would have survived any additional days.Cons:1) Condensation - This tent has a serious condensation issue. It didn't matter if I was pitching it at 5k elevation of 12k elevation. I had serious condensation issues for 10 nights in a row. It didn't matter if I had the vestibule open, closed, or if I camped away from water sources or near a tree, etc. I had more water on the inside tent walls than a swimming pool.2) The vestibule - The zipper for the indoor vestibule misaligned on day 2. It looks like it's a design flaw. In the SHR you get exposed to some serious winds - 50+ mph. On day 2 I made sure to get the tent as taut as possible. When I opened the vestibule zipper it misaligned because the tent was taut. I was afraid the zipper would break completely. So for the remainder of my trip I made sure the vestibule was loose. This made sleeping a pain because the bottom portion of the vestibule would flap in the wind.3) Durability - This tent is sold as a 3 season tent. I'm not sure it should be. During day 4 pine needles managed to pierce the vestibule wall. The tent was being bombarded with them while I was in a forest. Wind gusts were 58 mph+ that day. I'm glad it was just the vestibule wall on the actual chamber of the tent.4) Indoor mesh - On day 3 the indoor mesh started getting small holes that grew slowly each day. By day 10 I had one large hole - large enough for bugs to get through. The other two are likely to grow as time goes on.5) The stake attachment loops are cheaply made. Towards the end of my trip a few of them started showing signs of fraying. I am not sure they'll survive the rest of the year.Pros:1) It's light2) It's easy to set up.Overall I would not recommend this tent to anyone looking for bomber shelter for hard thru hiking or rough trails. If you're glamping or doing easier trails, this tent might work. I plan to retire this tent and use it solely for glamping; where I can jump inside my car should the tent fail (I expect it to).

Mid-1 and done!
30 June 2023

Just returned from and overnight shakedown (06/28/23) in Northwest NC.I was excited to setup the HMG Mid-1 in a real backcountry setting - Pisgah National Forest. For the last a few years and countless miles the Z- Duplex has been my go to shelter. The Mid-1 is seemingly effortless to set up. The interior sleep area is roomy both in width and length. Storing all my gear inside gave me plenty of room and I’m 5’-8”. My 25” wide Thermarest air mattress had room to spare on the width. Possibly my favorite part of this ultralight tent is the vestibule with the doors zipped, it’s huge! The zippered doors is a one handed operation and works flawlessly. The single trekking pole suggested height is 54” which allowed maximum air flow at its base and the peak vents.
