Ibanez AW54CE OPN Artwood Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar
The Ibanez Artwood AW54CE OPN - Acoustic Electric Guitar is one of the Artwood series and designed to blend the best traditional elements with modern guitar construction. Technology moves forward at a frenetic pace, and the world of guitar building is no different. Ibanez AEQ-TP2 preamp w/Onboard tuner The Ibanez AEQ-TP2 preamp provides the extra punch of on-board EQ along with a convenient and easy-to-read digital tuner and 2-band EQ, located on the instrument’s upper bout. Okoume back and sides The Okoume back and sides generate a woody, warm tone when the guitar is played softly or finger-picked and provide punchy high-mids with a clear projection when strummed. Ibanez T-bar Undersaddle pickup The Ibanez T-bar Undersaddle pickup accurately translates that full sound to whatever amplification system you plug it into. I found myself stuck in a hotel for a couple of weeks, fighting boredom. I missed my guitars back home, so decided to pick up a cheap acoustic to play around on. The guitar itself is well built, and beautiful in person. The immediate thing that you will notice is the lack of a full sound. From the store, it almost sounds like a guitar/ukulele hybrid. The guitar has a small, thin body compared to a standard acoustic, so you are not going to get a full, rich sound. When I got home I decided to put on a new set of strings, and put a set of D'Addario 80/20 Bronze lights on there, and boy what a difference! The sound is much brighter and full, while still nowhere near what you will get from a standard acoustic, it is much improved! All in all, a decent guitar for ... All in all, a decent guitar for learning and messing around on, or it is nice and light/compact for travel, however for standard every day use, or for those with more experience, better options exist.

I love the clean, bright sound from the smaller body, but still pretty good resonance and volume for its size. There are a couple of minor finish issues on the one I got but nothing too bad - just some roughness around the sound hole and a couple of frets that need filing but what do you expect for a low budget instrument. Only real issue is the neck is a bit on the narrow side for my fat fingers.

Overall:I recently sold an Epiphone "Masterbuilt" AJ45-ME due to quality issues and for me, this guitar blows it away. The sound wasn't quite as booming or full but it also didn't feel like I had a string bass hanging around my neck like the Epiphone. I feel like the fit and finish is great and the onboard tuner is a plus for me. It's super glossy so it shows everything but I ordered it as a practice alternative to my Les Paul so no worries there either. It came de-tuned as it should and I tuned it up very easily. Jammed on it for about an hour and it was just barely out of tune again. The pickup worked significantly better than on the Epiphone. This was a very solid purchase for me and I'm pretty darn impressed. zZounds seems to be a great place to order from, ... I had been playing a very old and very nice acoustic at church for night service, and didn't want to subject it to the rigors of live playing on a regular basis. After some research, it came down to purchasing a Talman or a Stratacoustic. I went with the Talman due to the price, and Ibanez's reputation. When the guitar arrived, I was a little apprehensive as the neck felt awesome, but the setup was awful. The strings were heavy gauge, and were set way too high. After some work shaving down the bridge, changing to light strings, and adjusting the truss rod, this baby plays great! I love that the electronics are really easy to use, and it was made to plug in. The sound when you are practicing unplugged isn't as full or rich as you get with a full sized acoustic, but this guitar wasn't made for that - it was made to be plugged in. I was able to eliminate having to use pedals to get the proper volume and EQ, which makes the live rig way easier to set up and tear down. I play it through a Line 6 spider II 75 watt head running through a Marshall 4x12 cabinet. The spider's clean channel is great for acoustic as it does not color the tone, and the Marshall is plenty loud for a church sanctuary. Overall, I am quite happy with the Talman, even though I had to put in some extra work to get it the way I like my guitars. It is a steal at the price if you have the skills and are willing to play with the setup.
Look, just wanted to reply to some reviews that say this guitar sounds well.....thin. Duh, yes its not a jumbo acoustic or even a regular body acoustic. Its a thinline acoustic so it sounds just like what it is. Ive played several thinline guitars and they all sound...well...thin. That doesnt mean its cheaply made or a bad sounding guitar. It has its own sound. If you want a deep bass, then buy a jumbo or regular acoustic. I like the easy neck movement. The chords sound fine and this guitar doesnt require anymore tuning than any other in this price range. I tried ten guitars at guitar center including more expensive brands like fender, mitchell, yamaha and others and this was the only one under 400 dollars that stayed in tune from an E chord to a C chord. I bought it because Ive owned Ibanez before and never regretted it. To each his own but keep in mind a thinline guitar is not going to have a deep rich sound, but, I record my bass along with it so it sounds fine. It is what it is...a nice thinline acoustic-electric guitar.
For my wedding (30 October 2021), we were given a gift that simply said "spend this on something fun!" My lovely wife asked me what we should spend it on, and I said that I kinda wanted a guitar, since my family had donated mine without me knowing (whoever has my old Takamine, I hope you're treating her right!) She loved the idea, and we started shopping. I wanted an acoustic-electric because I wanted the onboard tuner, and I wanted a cut-out style to have easy access to the higher frets. We settled on the grey sunburst Talman, and it's absolutely wonderful! My only complaint is the glossy finish used on the neck feels too... Clinical? I prefer feeling a satin smooth bare wood on a guitar neck, but it's nothing that a little bit of time with some 2000 grit sandpaper ... Overall:I bought this guitar to travel with. It works for the price but the craftsmanship is a little to be desired. The guitar came playable but I had to tighten up the truss rod a few twists and made it more playable. I am on the road so when I get home the high end of the frets need to be filed down. Cut my hand on one of them and the high E string has a tendency to get caught on the 3rd fret. Have yet to test the electronics but that is not important to me at this point. The guitar is beautiful other than that. The blue is pretty and the finish is flawless.
Ive been playing a little over a year. Had bought a gretch jim dandy to take on travels in RV. It was small but i hated everything about it. It just felt and sounded bad. I know some skilled players can really make it shine, but honestly its rightful place is as a nitch instrument. So i decided to look for something else smallish. Searching at guitar center i found this bad boy. Honestly its thinner than the gretsch and only a bit wider and about 2" longer overall. Still compact compared to my fender Newporter but not a kids size guitar by any means. The neck is very comfortable. The sound is not as deep as my fender but thats expected. Its 100 times better sound than the jim dandy. It reminds me of a les paul shape from the few Ive held. And u can easily play on ... MoreIve been playing a little over a year. The tuner is very handy and it also stays in tune well while playing. After a few days i may have to tweak a string or two but its likely from laying it around the house everywhere. My biggest complaint is the strings. I love playing this guitar so ill spend an hour or more on it every few days. I have to take a day off be because they destroy my fingers. I think they are 12s but they must be higher tension than my fender since shorter scale. The action is very playable but maybe it needs lowering. In any case i may try 11s to save my fingers. It just hurts.
Product received on time. Box unopened from factory. Strings so rusty that two were broken right out of the box. Plastic zip lock bag containing truss rod hex wrench and paper work had opened and contents strewn all over inside with guitar. Also came with connection cable for amp that had 1/4" metal jacks loose in the box. Guitar was badly damaged due to being hammered with metal guitar hex wrench and cable metal ends during shipment. Finish scratched badly. Neck bowed and very dry. Action unbelievably high due to bowed neck. Finish scratched badly. Neck bowed and very dry. Action unbelievably high due to bowed neck. While changing strings, I noticed the bridge slot for the saddle had large splits and chunks of wood missing due to being cut with a dull blade at the factory. Also, the bridge pin holes were drilled at an angle and oblong in shape, also caused by dull drill bit or router blade at factory. I glued up the bridge splits, adjusted the truss rod and lightly sanded the bridge pin holes to get the rough wood off and determined the bridge pins would most likely hold. The saddle wasn't flat on the bottom and so due to the high action, I sanded it flat out in my wood shop. I wouldn't recommend a lay person doing this, I am a wood carver and so have tools and ability to do this. Because I obtained this guitar for a very reasonable discount, I determined not to return it, but use it instead for a campfire guitar with friends this summer. It's a nice enough sounding and now that I fixed it, a reasonably well playable guitar. I'm going to sand off the top and refinish it with plain natural danish oil. The back and sides are scratched up, but for outdoor campfire singing and enjoyment, I don't care about that. I put feed and wax wood treatment on the fingerboard when replacing the strings. The wood soaked it up rapidly and overnight the rough fret edges went away. I'm guessing here, but I think this instrument could possibly have been one that sat on a boat too long on the California coast during the dock workers' strike exposing it to too much salt air. Air gets in the packaging no matter how well you bundle things up. Salt air eats guitar strings. I own two other Ibanez Talmans, the TCY74-OPN, and the TCM50-NT. Both of those I received in excellent condition with no issues. I think my luck ran out with this one and I just got a lemon. I like the other two so well as they are very comfortable to play for me and I love the double cutaway shape for an acoustic, I think Ibanez is the only company who makes one with this design. I'm going to have to keep it now due to the work I've done on it, but this shouldn't have come to me like this. Nobody ever opened the box before it was shipped to me. If they had, I believe this would have been a better experience, but I have learned, so that is a good thing.
Great guitar for practice and plays well straight out of the box. Sounds very good through a PA as it has a pick up rather than usual transducers. For price can't be beaten. Talman TCM 50E's being sold in the UK do not seem to have a built in tuner in the pre amp which in my opinion makes life much easier. The guitar was listed as in stock in the central warehouse which is in Germany. No worries there as tracking was 1st class and delivery was timely. All in all a very good experience.
