Overall the Ibanez SR500E is a great bang for the buck. I generally play it in passive mode. Nothing against the electronics that come with this bass, passive is just a preference. Flipping the active circuitry on and off is quick and easy due to the convenient placement of its switch. Furthermore, while in passive mode the treble pot acts as a tone control. Cool! The Okoume body produces a tone similar to mahogany. There is a distinct emphasis on the mids and low mids giving a nice clarity and growl to notey and staccato passages when playing from the bridge pickup. The 5pc Jatoba/Walnut neck enhances this midrange quality. For me the neck is a bit spongy. Maple necks with a rosewood fingerboard are my preference. I am very particular concerning neck adjustment and I've found myself tweaking this neck frequently. However, the instrument is still getting acclimated to its new environment. That being said, I also often adjust my maple-neck basses. All other features on this bass are quality; tuning keys, smooth pots, solid multi-tweak bridge and a tight recessed output jack. This bass will be getting a fret level and dress. That does not imply that the neck work is poor. Quite the opposite. The factory neck work is very good, but not quite in the excellent category. Of course this is not a $1500 plus instrument, and I've played plenty in that range that had subpar fret work. As a matter of fact, I've only owned two basses of which I didn't do some fret work. One was a custom Jazz bass built by Tetsuya Y. at Sunset Custom in L.A. and the other was a $3000 custom six string fretless by the same.

I was attracted to this bass because of the specs and reviews. After stopping at the local Guitar Center and checking it out, I found it nice and light compared to others and having a comfortable neck that worked for me. The pickups sounded great. After returning home and playing my cheaper bass, I knew I would no longer be satisfied and decided to buy the SR500e. Unfortunately the local guitar center only had a display model. It played great but had some sharp frets. I settled for it, figuring I could fix that myself. Love the sound and feel of this bass. A five star bass if you get one with good fretwork.

This is a very nice bass. Beautiful wood body! Well made with a fantastic feel and playing ease. The neck can't be beat. If you are after a thinner, brighter sound, this is the bass for you. I prefer a fatter, punchier sound that I get from my Fender Jazz. Don't get me wrong; I love to play the Ibanez, and for some tunes it fits perfectly. Maybe the addition of flat wounds would get closer to the sound I'm looking for.

Played with a 1976 Jazz for 40 years. Great sound of course. True classic but heavy, limited sound capabilities. Bought this Ibanez SR500E last year and love it! Action a little rough at times but lightweight, great sound range and the boost switch is great for strong endings and when we are really rocking.
Overall:I play a lot of country and some rock. Played in a country band for 15 years and opened for some of the biggest country stars out there. Always played Fender Bass Guitars. Bought this bass for the lighter weight alone and was pleasantly surprised at the great sound and play I got from this bass. I now have two because I really like the play and feel. One for travel and one for home. I would recommend this bass to anyone who enjoys great sound and ease of playing.
Ok. First off I'm a beginner bass player. I started playing a Yamaha for about 5 months and wanted to move up to something with a bit more range. I tried out a bunch of different guitars that were highly rated but they just didn't feel right. Then I saw the reviews for the Ibanez sr500 and knew that the next time I made it to GC, I had to try it out. Wow! This guitar is easy to play and the tone is great. There are a bunch of options for bass, treble and mid tone settings. Also, the passive and active pick up switch adds punch to whatever you play. This is a great package: looks, feel and sound. Definitely going to last me a while.

I did my search and made all kind of comparisons to lower and higher models of this bass. It is twice expensive than 306, and a few hundred cheaper than 606, and I think it is worth the price especially for the flawless fret work, the Bartolini pickup and the bridge. you may find other basses on this price range, but non of them will have Bartolini or an Ibanez bridge where you can adjust the space between the strings. also the place of truss rod adjustment hole is unexpectedly useful. and it has only one truss rod which is also a plus for me; I have no idea about twin truss rod ... MoreIt sounds and play great, which is for me the main reason I bought it. only you may find some imperfections, only cosmetically. beautiful bass. not flashy but very classy looking. sounds amazing with that active eq turned on and dialed in. i was looking at an sr400 but the neck on this thing sold me right away. VERY comfortable slim neck. plays like butter. the Bartolini's sound amazing. stays in tune for days (and i bang on the strings, bend like crazy, etc...).
