This is not among an expensive bass, but I really like it. It is semi-hollow, being routed out on both sides and it is definitely lighter, plus the balance is quite good. It sounds great, but the grainless look reminds me of a masonite Moserite. With the vast range of woods available for other Ibanez offerings, this choice is a little odd, but that's my only beef. It sounds great and plays great.My advice is to buy one. It's a great bass with a good ROI and it has that unmistakable upright tone and that lucious, soft buzz.

Overall:Ibanez really nailed it with this bass. Easy to use, two knob bass that has a great fretless tone. Bass is very sensitive to hand position so there are a variety of tones to be found. Bass intonation was set perfectly (like Gary Willis style). Out of the box I could have taken this to a gig and played comfortably. Body and neck are both comfortable. Black fret lines on the board are useless to me but don't get in the way.Compared to the Portamento this may seem like a very simple bass. Having owned the Portamento it is. The Portamento is a fine bass but there are almost too many tonal options. With the SRH500F I find great sounds tones with ease. Records very well and sounds great in a mix too.

Overall:When I say I own it, I mean I own THIS bass guitar, the one in the picture.I can't put this instrument down, it is always the closest thing at my side.Out of the box I could not find a thing wrong with it. The fit and finish were really great. I had to adjust the truss rod after a bit as there was a bit of noisiness, but that allowed me to lower the action even more.This instrument is really silky smooth to play, with a thin neck, super light due to the semi hollow body. The tone is excellent, and the piezo output can be adjusted on each string.So I feel this was just the perfect bass for me, just feels right, and I love the music and sound that I can make with it.
It's very easy to play. Has a great fretless sound and it extremely lightweight. The neck is very narrow near the tuning pegs and the neck has that bare wood feel. Great bass.

This bass has separate under saddle pick ups for each string which can be adjusted for the tones that you are looking for which an electric bass doesn't give. The sound is very much like an upright bass and for me was exactly what I was unable to get from a fretted electric instrument. Playing technique obviously needs to very precise with a Fretless instrument but the amount of expression available is astonishing. Considering the size of this instrument and semi hollow construction the weight is very manageable although not exactly lightweight. This is the nearest I've ever got to a Double Bass sound without the double bass !Usual Ibanez SR quality. Well set up, plays like a dream.Instant Danny Thompson on DB. Turn the Tone knob and it's more like Alan Thomson or Mo Foster with an fretless bass

Kudos to zZounds customer service for arranging for me to ship back and getting a replacement into my hands quickly, no fuss no muss. The only complaint I have on the replacement is a little thing but it's one of the details that should be paid attention to at this price point - the rear pickup cavity cover is the ... Very nice bass. Looks good and plays well straight out of the box. Beautiful acoustic-like tone but with potential for modification.
Minus one star for one thing only. Build quality. I expected a little more. There are just some attention to details that are missing finish wise. Other than that it plays great and the woody acoustic tone is excellent. Very nice bass for under a grand.
