All season comfort with Merino Anatomica Boxers

My husband is gradually replacing all his conventional cotton boxers with Icebreaker Anatomica merino boxers. We live in central Canada where temperatures go to the mid- 30s Celsius in the summer and minus 20s in the winter, and he finds his merino boxers comfortable across the whole temperature range. They're cozy in the winter but surprisingly comfortable in the summer heat because they wick away sweat. He packed a couple of pairs for his 800-km Camino de Santiago walk in May and enthused about how comfortable they were - no chafing or binding. And like all high-quality Icebreaker merino garments, they stay fresh-smelling, even on the trail when you can't change every day. Way to go Icebreaker! You top the merino apparel market!

The merino is great at ventilation but also allows a bit of natural warmth. Great for any weather. The wool is soft and dries quickly. Resists chafing better than cotton or elastane blend underwear. Handles odour well when doing outdoor activities and is easy to clean while hiking or travelling. I have a few sets of these and will be using them to bike across the US this summer. Only negative is that the waistband likes to fold over on itself, but this isn't a major issue and won't stop be from buying in the future.

These are comfortable in both feel and temperature. They are also well shaped. The drawback is longevity. I've bought these a few times over the past couple of years as I quite like them, but the crotch has totally worn out on the oldest pair (about 2.5 years old). I perhaps average wearing each pair about once every 1.5 weeks for normal use, and have worn this pair backpacking and hiking a few times as well. The pairs I have that are 1.5 and 1 year old are still holding up. For the price I was surprised at how quickly they wore out though - I've had target underwear last longer.

Fabric Disintegrates
14 June 2022

I was recommended these by friends who hike / camp. I purchased 2 pairs in store and found them comfortable, but nothing to write home about. After about 2-3 uses 1 of the pairs started to small holes in it all over. Around the seams and in the middle of the fabric. My girlfriend also noted that they appeared "see through" or like a mesh when worn in a well lit room. After about another 6 months to a year the 2nd pair started showing holes as well in the same way. I was told by Icebreaker to be more gentle with them. I have been generally wearing them sparingly (especially after the first incident) and only for activities like travel, hiking, camping etc.

Fabric not comfortable
12 July 2022

I love wool, especially as a base layer. In my search for the best wool underwear I tried Smartwool, Icebreaker, and Meriwool. I didn't like how thin and fragile Smartwool felt. The Icebreakers, while comfortable, kept riding up my thighs, which led to bunching under shorts or pants. Also, they didn't have that typical soft, smooth feeling of Merino wool. I think it's because of the higher percentage of synthetic material. The Meriwool was perfect (wished REI sold their products). I already own a number of Meriwool products, so I wasn't surprised at how good their underwear felt. They are 100% wool and feel like it.I did wear each brand for a month to really test it out.

Fantastic....but expensive.

Bought these because I have been wanting to try merino drawers for a hot minute. I have long since switched to merino socks and have some base layers for cold weather hiking, etc. As i had some MJ Reward dollars and a coupon code, I decided to give them a go since I only came out of pocket a small amount.I wore them on a thru-hike of the foothills trail. I started the trail in the pouring rain and was pleasantly surprised by how little water these held. They were pretty well dry by the next morning. Averaging about 16 miles a day in mid-Jun when the high temps were ~85* F, these drawers kept me pretty comfortable. I had no chafing, they dried out quickly when it rained and/or after sweating profusely all day. If not, other big-name brands are only marginally worse, and a LOT less expensive.

Long time wearer, rotate between size L & M
3 June 2021

I have a 31-32 waist, 29" inseam, lean, athletic build, especially legs. I wear a M in everything but often a L in shorts for the leg width (mainly cycling shorts). I have tried all the IB boxer fits and then the past 12 months found the "long" and won't go back. The regular anatomica boxers were so uncomfortable riding up but I wore them for years rotating at least 20 pair before finally giving up. The general wear was great - some would tear at the leg after a year or two of tugging them down, but otherwise held up well. The long length is perfect even for someone with a shorter 29" inseam. After a number of washes the legs of the Large were stretching out and also beginning to ride slightly (never very far), but only have several hours driving or walking, sitting/standing. The L are still "anatomic" yet a comfortable, snug fit. I've just this past week ordered 3 pairs of the mediums. Legs are just a tiny bit tight at the seam out of the dryer, but I can tell I'm a medium in these shorts which might mean they fit a little big given the size of cycling legs. Expecting the long to be even better in hot humid conditions and long travel days. Only complaints, more colors please (and nothing so odd like IB products colors have been over the years). Also, why the white lettering on the band on the grey boxer when the black has darker? The white looks tacky if it shows out of your shorts/pants. IB is not CK.

Nope.
7 September 2023

The wool fabric is fuzzy, thin, short fiber, low quality cheap-o stuff. Nowhere near what it used to be. Total rip off. Even at 30 percent off sale. This is my third generation of icebreaker stuff over the years, and every time it get worse and worse as they cut corners. And because the fabric is so cheap, it does not hold its shape so it sags and bunches, and looks quite flimsy and fragile.I think I'm done with icebreaker.

The Best Unmentionables

Absolutely love the fit of these. They hold everything in place and are extremely comfortable on the skin. They don’t shed as much as some others when doing high output activities either. So far I have used these for yoga, running, biking, climbing, snowboarding as well as casually and they perform better than cotton in every situation (and no holes yet!) The elastic also seems to last a little longer than most boxers to me, it usually stretches out pretty quickly with other brands, but I find myself putting on a pair from a year ago that still feels like brand new
