My first piece ever purchased. Love the color, it’s the main factor honestly as my house is from 1910 and doesn’t match many products. At first, it started off very easy to assemble. But then, as I pulled more pieces out of the box, many of the pieces were damaged and I picked up in store. What was extremely disappointing was when the hammer went through the side of the shelving unit while trying to assemble. So note, please do not use a lot of force because you will inflict damage. While assembling, I managed to chip quite a few of the shelves and I’m hoping this will help others because while it is a nice piece, it requires a softer touch apparently.

This product came with missing holes (which had to be drilled in) and missing pegs. It's hard to believe, but finding replacement pegs for this product is actually hard. And don't expect Ikea to help you, because they won't. Once you open this up, and start to put together and realize you have missing parts, well your up a creek with no paddle home. They will expect you to dismantle all the work you done (and whatever time you spent drilling holes into it) and put back in a floppy box now, make sure you have tape, and drive it back to the store. They have no way of helping anyone with their products if they are missing parts. So, basically IKEA is advertising these products as theirs, but they are not, because they can't give you missing parts. Expect you to ... This was exactly the perfect size and heigh needed for our living room. I knew it would fit perfectly, but my husband had doubts at first. However, when he saw it built he had to give credit where credit was due. We both absolutely love this with the legs because it goes with the rest of our furniture and just gives an elevated look (pun intended). Our main reason for getting it was to have somewhere to store all our sons books as well as some of his toys. The top row would have doors for us to store things away out of reach and out of sight such as important letters or paints and scissors for our boy. Our son loves it just as much as we do because now he can reach to get books himself to read, has an overview of all his toys as well as his card and board games. The ... Instructions were straight forward and easy as always although fitting the doors was a tad tricky.

The shelf system is, aesthetically, great. Assembly would have been a breeze if not for the poor quality of dowells provided. 4 of them cracked and broke during installation and made it nearly impossible to put it together. There were zero spares provided, which was really disappointing, given their fragility. Luckily, i had some spares left from another set of ikea furniture I bought years ago. If not for my pack-rat nature, I wouldn't have had those and wouldn't have been able to complete it. I strongly recommend that you order spares. Ideally, Ikea would revisit this shoddy bit of craftsmanship and provide stronger metal dowells, or at very least provide extras.
I love these to store all my books. They are very sturdy once attached to the wall. I must say that they are not as nice as the Expedit units they replaced. They’re a bit thinner overall but still have the same interior dimensions to fit larger books. Easy to assemble except the sticky plastic protective strips were an absolute pain to peel off. It took longer to peel all that off than to actually put the units together. Very annoying! Other than that, I would definitely recommend them. I have hundreds of books and I love how organized and beautiful everything looks. I will be trimming them out with base, trim and crown molding for a built in look.
Ikea may brag about a cheaper price but be warned, the quality of the new Kallax is drastically different. It is substantially smaller than the original. It is definitely made with cheaper materials. Ours came scuffed and had a weird black stain on it. Super disappointed as we wanted to match it to the original we have. It is not the same height. Almost an inch smaller on every side. It is way less stable. So yes... Cheaper but this is the dollarstore version of what the Kallax once was. It should have a different name so as not to be confused with the original because they are in NO WAY the same.
Don't be fooled by the lower price tag. If you have legacy Kallax pieces, the new version is a complete disappointment. The workmanship is terrible. It's made of cheap materials, the size is different and the pieces are flimsy. We use these as record shelves and had a 20yr old one that needed replacing. The brand new Kallax arrived damaged, stained and is a different material than it's predecessors. I don't have confidence this piece will bear the weight of hundreds of vinyl records. It is significantly smaller than my older version and has lost its charm and quality. I expect this level of shrinkflation and low quality from a purveyor like Amazon, not Ikea. This may very well be my last Ikea piece ever. Be aware of the size, colour and quality difference if you are ... MoreDon't be fooled by the lower price tag. Best to find a used piece in good shape because brand new out of the box is a complete disappointment. I wish I could attach pictures here. Be better Ikea!!
I am highly disappointed in Ikea as a whole!!! I just bought my 3rd Kallax and the quality and the material is absolute garbage. If I would have known that Ikea went from quality products, to making their furniture with the cheapest material possible. I would have never bought a 3rd Kallax, I would have rather gone with another big box store. That makes a similar version, but for $40 less and the same cheap quality that Ikea is making the Kallax now.The Kallax is also a lot lighter, there was particle dust everywhere, and the packaging is done horribly. Ikea cares more about saving a buck over quality. I don't see myself buying another piece of furniture in the foreseeable future from Ikea. The only reason I plan on keeping it, is because I do not have time to lug ... MoreI am highly disappointed in Ikea as a whole!!! This is a bookcase or shelving unit with some heft to it. Assembly DOES take more time than a simple Billy bookcase. I just had to disassemble mine for transport (take a lot of photos of your efforts [or KEEP the instruction manual... unlike me]). Kalax uses many dowels to hold shelves steady. A rubber mallet will reduce the risks of scuffing the surfaces. The door & drawer options fit well (a weird origami jig is slid into the open spaces). Would I buy it again? Absolutely. Don't try transporting this unit unassembled... you risk tearing it apart, eh. And keep those instructions handy (or at least scan them before tossing them out). Sigh.
