It's easy to assemble, very functional and looks good! Price/performance ratio is good too! A tip for first-timers, if you intend to use a hammer to get the small wooden pieces in the holes, use it very softly, otherwise it might break and get stuck inside. Also worth mentioning, we ordered two kalaxes, one was defective and was immediately replaced by IKEA. Great customer support!

I bought a few of these in the 8-cube configuration a long time ago to store vinyl records and loved them. I heard that IKEA discontinued them years ago and recently found out that they started making them again. The new edition is not quite as sturdy as the originals but are still very good. The outside frame is a little more narrow and the whole unit is slightly lighter, but the old ones were probably heavier than they needed to be so this shouldn't be a big deal. Happy with both the quality and the value.

I wanted to get the Billy Bookcases. Online it said they were in stock. Even at the store it said they were in stock, but they weren't. Since I do not live close to the store, I did not want to waste my trip and so I settled for buying the Kallax bookcases instead. I bought 4 of them, all different sizes. I was very disappointed.Regardless of size they are held together with 8 screws and wooden dowls. The wooden dowls do not fit well into the holes. Since they are a few inches long but thin, a few of them broke. Luckily I have tools and my own dowl jig so I drilled them out, widened the holes and used bigger dowls.I also had to use a rubber mallet to tap the dowls fully into the holes. They can either use thicker dowls and/or drill their holes ever so slightly bigger so everything will fit together easily.I never had these problems when assembling their Billy bookcases of which I have 12 or 13 of.

I ordered two of these units. I was in need of both bookshelves and drawers, and these units seemed like they'd do the trick.I had a great deal of difficulty assembling the first, but managed it on the second attempt. The wooden pegs refused to go into the holes properly, which led to a slight skew. I had ordered drawer inserts but because of the skew couldn't get the inserts to install properly. Instead I ordered some Dronas boxes which worked beautifully!I just opened the box for the second unit. The shelves are scratched but seem to be structurally sound so I'll use it anyway.I'm not returning the damaged unit because I live in a VERY rural area and it took a ton of effort to get my orders delivered here, plus the nearest store is an 8-hour roundtrip away. ... It serves a purpose for storage, but i think the materials are too cheap. When we were putting together our KALLAX cubes, it didn’t line up perfectly despite our careful attention to building instructions. Now the shelves don’t shut correctly and it bothers me for the price and time spent trying to build it. There’s just something not right about the way the material looks and feels. It looked better online than in person. Not satisfied sadly
I prefer to get the smaller 2-4 cube shelf units a they’re much easier to move around or if you’re having a manic moment in the middle of the night and want to rearrange the entire room. It’s far better to move smaller shelves than the larger 8+ units. … was it worth the price? Mmm I’m pretty sure these used to be around 30ish bucks but now they’re back up to 40 to 60 rounded up. I’d appreciate if they were 34 dollars and wouldn’t spike up in cost more than 5 bucks. Idk that’s just me
Was simple and straightforward to put together and feels sturdy however I noticed a scratch on the top of the unit after it was put together. I figured I would just turn the unit over, so I went to remove the sticky non-marking pads I had put on the bottom, they are so sticky they removed and damaged the finish just from peeling them off.Nothing in the instructions warn you of this and I have used these kinds of pads on furniture numerous times and never had an issue removing them to replace or reposition. Very disappointed because now the finish on the top and bottom of the unit are damaged.
Look. I understand that IKEA is an international brand that caters to many different people who speak many different languages. But sometimes words just work MUCH BETTER than pictures! I bought a white Kallax to match another Kallax that I’ve owned for years. When I opened the box to assemble it, lo and behold, I mistakenly bought ANOTHER version of a white Kallax—high gloss white—which is much shinier than the matte white. Nowhere on the box does it say GLOSS white. It just shows a white dot. Funnily enough, this white dot looks exactly the same as the other white. Who would’ve thought?! I didn’t even know IKEA made gloss white! Now I have to go all the way back to the store to return this product since it doesn’t match my current furniture. This problem could be ... MoreLook. I am a huge fan of IKEA and my house is furnished with most things from you! But in recent times I’ve noticed such a difference with the quality, wrong parts, holes not matching up etc. I have just received a Kallax unit and was excited to build. I love them and every bedroom and storage cupboard has one. I even have the TV unit! But building this one was stressful… all of the doweling was too big so there’s gaps where the wood meets. I would bring it back to store but as I paid for home delivery, it would defeat the object as I would have to go to the store anyway! As this is going in a storage cupboard I am letting this one go… but I am losing faith in IKEA recently. The quality is nothing like it used to be!
I love my Kallax shelves. I actually bought five of them in various sizes. So many things I love about these shelves (in no particular order).1. They look great. They're clean and simple.2. The separate pieces are quite light but the unit is very sturdy when it's put together correctly.3. It's easy to put together. If you get stuck trying to assemble it, you can always find help.4. The units don't have that annoying particle board backing. I love this because my freshly painted walls aren't covered up by the unattractive backing and it makes it so convenient to plug stuff in.5. They are so versatile. You can buy fabric totes or drawers or cabinet doors to put in the squares for added flexibility and storage options. This is actually what sold me on these ... IKEA sells a cat bed that you can put in the squares (who knew?) and I have one in my Kallax.6. They are super affordable compared to other cabinets and storage units. Trust me, I scoured the internet for weeks.7. My Star Wars collection looks great in my Kallax units and I am very happy with them.
