The headboard is two pieces instead of one, making it weaker. The connecting hardware is terrible compared to the last generation of hardware. The density of the material is half what it used to be, which makes for a lighter product, but a product that’ll last a quarter of the time as the older generations of Malm. The slats are a fraction of the thickness. The locking pieces are useless. Many pieces which used to be metal are now plastic.Such a disappointment. Clearly the designers and engineers are no longer at the helm at IKEA. IKEA is the Boeing of furniture.

This Bed Frame looks nice, but is very poorly designed. I have slept on it one night with my partner and it has already broken. When purchasing this bed frame in store, there are two boxes you need with parts for assembly, what they don't tell you, is that there is an *optional* third box with a support beam, which is located in a separate aisle/bin in store and costs extra. This support beam is NECESSARY, and if you don't have it, the bed WILL BREAK (but they don't tell you this). Without this middle support beam, there are 4 metal "beams" that go on the corners of the frame, that are the smallest, pieces of flimsy metal and are supposed to hold your entire box spring and mattress. Good Value Bed Base

It will not distract one's attention from the decoration of any bedroom. However, the bed base is low compared to competing brands and may not be suitable for users with personal mobility conditions. The dimensions of the bed will tolerate only the tightest of fits of a non-Ikea mattress. Finally, the horizontal slats of the bed's base are laid out under tension and can be difficult to fit into place. Assembly by two people, as recommended in the instructions, will save any despair for a person attempting to assemble it on their own. That being said, and if the assembly instructions are followed completely, this bed base is well functioning and strong. Lower quality than the same model from 10 years ago
2 October 2023

I had an old Malm bed that I had moved house with many times over the last 10 years. Eventually it fell apart so I decided to get the same Malm bedframe since I had a good experience. The new Malm frame is a lot lower quality than the one from 10 years ago, yet the price has gone up. The new price is almost double what the old one was from 10 years ago, but the frame is now thinner and has less wood. It's very difficult to disassemble the new model when moving houses. With the old one you only had to remove a few cams to disassemble the frame. With the new model you need to remove the cams along with 16 screws to remove the slats. The slats block access to the cams so you have to remove them first. I have no idea why Ikea updated the design to make it harder to ... MoreI had an old Malm bed that I had moved house with many times over the last 10 years. The new bedframe definitely won't survive multiple house moves. Once you remove the screws, it damages the wood and makes it harder to put them back in. Overall a disappointment.

Malm - Buying: Need to know, not good to know
1 March 2024

When ordering this bed, you NEED the Skorva support beam. On the Ikea website, there are 3 different ways to buy this bed. Bed alone, Bed and Skorva beam, Bed, Skorva beam and drawers. We bought the bed in store. We didn't know the beam was separate and when ordering at the kiosk in the warehouse, there was NO GUIDANCE on the Ikea website to purchase the Skorva beam. This is not a "Good to Know", it is a Need to Buy with this! The website should reflect this, but it doesn't. I complained to a Stoughton MA manager that the beam needs to be added on the website for the Bed alone. She didn't find anything wrong, and I seemed to be bothering her with this complaint/suggestion. The website needs to have beam as a "Choose:" option when ordering the bed alone. Need some help resolving the mattress not fitting issue...

Hello, again. So I received a response from Ikea, which I appreciate. It is below: Hi jennifer,IKEA received your review on MALM and responded:Thanks for taking the time to review our MALM bed frame. Not worth it
27 August 2024

I bought this bed frame to use in my student house. Putting it together was rather easy but I do have my fair share of experience with ikea furniture. After just a couple months of having the bed frame the wooden slats became very loose and would often slip off the metal piece. Any sudden movements would result in the bed completely falling through to the ground due to the lack of support from the slats. Since I have had to put the slats back on the railing multiple times it caused the metal piece to snap due to pressure from the bed and wooden pieces being out of place. My bed is currently in the bed frame but basically on the ground and I have to repurchase more wooden slats and a new metal bar. Not happy about this and would not recommend this bed frame to anyone.

Poor / unnecessary design. Difficult assembly
7 April 2024

Assembly of most of product is straightforward but critically bolts and cylinders to attach frame together I found very difficult…..impossible. Holes drilled for cylinders are unnecessarily too deep but you need to install cylinders and hope bolts align. If the tolerance is small why have some much optional depth of hole for cylinders. Plus why not use the same system used to attach headboard, namley bolt and nut whereby you attach nut once bolt is passed through/visible. Overall very frustrated as need bed for daughters imminent operation. Assembly should be easier

Poor replacement for older Malm
13 February 2023

My daughter previously had a white Malm standard double bed, which was really low profile, sturdy and perfect for her room. However, when she bought a new IKEA mattress last year, we realised that the mattress sizes had changed leaving approx a 3cm gap around the mattress, which was irritating. As a result, we gave the original lovely Malm bed away and bought the new version. This has been a real disappointment. The mattress now sits snugly in the frame, but this is the only positive thing I can say. The bed fittings are not good quality and don’t sit flush as they should, hence making it feel far less sturdy/secure than the previous one. On an aesthetic note, it also looks less classy and, despite taking up slightly less floor space than the old frame, it now seems ... MoreMy daughter previously had a white Malm standard double bed, which was really low profile, sturdy and perfect for her room. On an aesthetic note, it also looks less classy and, despite taking up slightly less floor space than the old frame, it now seems to take over the room. Even on the lower level setting, the mattress stands way too high above the edge of the bed. Even if you prefer the height of the new version, I would still be wary of the poor quality fittings.

The slats are the problem for the creaking!
9 March 2024

We brought this bed as a 'it will do for now'. We got home put it together, as soon as my other half put the slats on and sat on the mattress the noise was awful! He looked at the slats when he sat on the mattress and where the slats move against the frame the noise was instant! We had an IKEA bed previously, we kept the slats off that bed as they are soo much better, thicker and more sturdy. No moving around to rub against the frame so no noise. If this review can help in anyway, please buy different slats and the bed is absolutely perfect! I would give the name of the slats we have but IKEA no longer sells them. Avoid the slats that bend as they rub against the frame.
