I rolled my own XX and Tri-X for many years but the prices slowly crept up while availability went down and I found myself looking for alternatives. I've enjoyed HP5 in a variety of formats so I had no hesitation ordering a 100' spool to put in my Bobinquick film loader. HP5 is always a go to for 35mm photography. With buying the film I'm bulk, the answer is pretty simple. More for for less $ per rollHighly recommend as the film I received was fairly fresh having the expiration date set in 2026. Once I run out, will most likely buy again!

I've been using Ilford's HP5Plus in the 120 format for a while now and have always been pleased with the results, so I decided to switch, at least temporarily, from my tried-and-true Tri-X and give this a shot (no pun intended). I honestly can't tell that there's a lot of difference from Tri-X aside from some slight difference in contrast (less than with Tri-X), which isn't a deal breaker of even undesirable (depending on what I'm photographing). My only surprise was that it's not all that much cheaper than Tri-X these days. I thought it used to be cheaper, even recently.
HP5+ doesn't offer the finest grain or lowest price. But it has this hard to describe property that some photographs look a bit like charcoal paintings. This is truly a pictorial film, well worth investing the time to learn and use well. I develop it in Xtol for a smoother appearance, or in Ilfotec HC for a grittier and moody look. It's not sensitive to development times or exposure, letting you make minor mistakes without punishment.
Ilford HP5+ is the 'go-to' film for many film photographers, and a gazillion reviews online sing its praises!!! I'll list a few of the reasons why I like it:- Great exposure latitude. Even if you don't nail the exposure exactly, you're still likely to get a decent image. Unlike some film stocks out there, you will know that the next roll of HP5+ will perform just like the last one. One less thing to worry about.- It's priced just about right! There are some less expensive films out there, and they usually perform to that standard. I use it on sunny days, cloudy days, indoors, at the local jazz club...every conceivable condition. What this 100 foot bulk roll does is allow you to save money, if you're willing to spend a little time and invest in a bulk loader and reloadable cassettes. If, like me, you're in this film lark for the long term, and you know you're going to use lots of one specific film, bulk loading can save 25-35% on your ongoing film costs.You have a second advantage with rolling your own, which is that you can choose to load a cassette with any length of film you like. If you want to test a camera with an 8 exposure film, you roll 8 exposures. If you want 36 or even to ... MoreIlford HP5+ is my "go to" film for many situations. I spent a lot of time looking at several 400 speed films and while there are some that have perhaps a more unique look than HP5, there's a reason it's so popular. Available from 35mm up to ultra-large format (I've used it in 35mm, 120, and 4x5 myself) and while I find I use it differently for each format, it's great for each.This is my 2nd HP5 35mm bulk roll I've purchased since getting back into film and nearly always shoot it at 800 or 1600 in 35mm. I fine it just shines so well at those speeds and developed in Xtol Replenished or XT-3 replenished. Just a beautiful stock.
Ilford HP5 is a very versatile black and white film. It will give your pictures a classic look. The bulk package is great and allows you to take a lot of pictures. If your interested in Black and White film photography Ilford HP5 should be part of your film staple.
beautiful film! I would suggest y'all start packaging it in metal canisters though, the entire roll is just inside an unsealed black bag inside of the box it comes in so it doesn't feel as well protected from the light as bulk rolls in metal canisters come! thanks though!
