A fiber paper that has been around since the 90's

It's not a myth- if you could go back in a Time Machine, the quality of printing papers used to be much better than they are now. When choosing a paper these days, I highly recommend going with a paper that has been around as long or longer than any other made today.Ilford Multi warmtone may not be as good as a lot of the papers pre- 2000, but it has stood the test of time, and it is the paper I recommend over anything else made today. Although it is different than it was in the 90's, unless you have used it habitually since then, you may not even realize that it is different. To sum it up, Ilford fiber warmtone is the only paper made today that I would have an extremely hard time living without. This is a paper with the range, tonal quality, and richness for master prints. Given the relatively small number of fiber-based papers available today, those whose prefer a warm paper with a clean white base will enjoy this one. I am primarily a portraitist, and this is my go-to, toned to varying degrees in a (usually) very dilute selenium solution (1:20) to enhance tonal richness and separation. The surface offers a good look in-between Ilford's matte and newer glossy surface (which is generally slicker than I would like, unlike the former natural gloss surface of years ago; I use it for contact sheets.) I use a kind of subtle varnish on the semi-matte that results in a soft luster that restores much of the tonal depth of the wet print while avoiding a hard gloss.

Although this paper is more expensive than RC papers, and it can take from 5-10 minutes in the fixer as opposed to the maybe 1-3 minutes of RC, this paper will last. It also gives you a wonderful vintage feel, as early papers were fibre based.I don't really like the finish of this paper compared to glossy, but glossy fibre paper is readily available too.P.S. That's Granddad in his youth 😀

Even though Multi FB warmtone has changed over the years, I still think it is Ilford's best Fiber multigrade paper, and I will keep buying it until it changes. The paper is not as warm and is faster than it used to be- two things that worry me about it.I have used this paper for many big shows, as it is very consistent from batch to batch and although I wish it was the same as it was 20-30 years ago, I will keep using it if it stays the same as it is currently.I do think Gallery is better paper, but since it only comes in grade 3 now, it is not nearly as versatile, even though I have reached the conclusion that it is closer to the way it was 20-30 years ago than the Multigrade fiber warmtone, and I have grown to like the more neutral tones, especially now that ... MoreEven though Multi FB warmtone has changed over the years, I still think it is Ilford's best Fiber multigrade paper, and I will keep buying it until it changes. The paper is not as warm and is faster than it used to be- two things that worry me about it.I have used this paper for many big shows, as it is very consistent from batch to batch and although I wish it was the same as it was 20-30 years ago, I will keep using it if it stays the same as it is currently.I do think Gallery is better paper, but since it only comes in grade 3 now, it is not nearly as versatile, even though I have reached the conclusion that it is closer to the way it was 20-30 years ago than the Multigrade fiber warmtone, and I have grown to like the more neutral tones, especially now that the warmtone multigrade fiber is less warm than it used to be.As long as ilford keeps making both (Gallery and warmtone fiber) the same way it is today, I will keep buying it.

Ilford Multigrade FB Warmtone Paper (Semi-Matt
16 November 2023

Having been a customer of BH Photo since the early 1970's I have always been a fan of their service and quality of products. Illford Papers are of no exception. This paper offers superb archival performance and with a range of warm brown/blacks that are superb! Wonderful paper!

Outstanding paper for fine art.
4 February 2024

For good reason, this paper his highly acclaimed among many fine art photographers. It's tonal scale is beautiful throughout the grades, and it tones nicely. I prefer the semi-matte surface for my prints, which I varnish, maintaining the semi-matte but restoring the tonal range. I use the gloss surface for contact proofs and some small prints.I find that toning in selenium tends less readily to go into the reddish in the mid-tones (which I don't want) with Eco-Pro developer. If I had anything to improve with WTF, it would be some way to prevent the split toning typical of multi-contrast papers. (The Foma equivalent avoids this to a greater extent, but tones very quickly and to a different tonal color, and requires either red safelights or very dim amber lighting ... MoreFor good reason, this paper his highly acclaimed among many fine art photographers. Premium Quality

To start off I admit that my sample photo is on the other texture of paper but still it's Ilford FB.I don't really make paper negatives, but as I had some FB paper lying around I thought I'd give it a go. It seems to have worked though the result was insanely contrasty. As a normal darkroom paper I use FB occasionally but it's tricky to work with as it requires lots of fixing and washing.

I love the feel of this paper. It's closer to card than paper as it is nice and thick. The downside being that it takes an eternity to fix and wash, so it's not "economical" in that way. Well worth your best negatives though, especially if you are looking to display in a gallery (sadly I'm not that famous 😜).

Superb paper, beautiful tonality
31 October 2023

Warmtone FB has been my primary paper for years. I use the glossy surface for proofs and semi-matte, which I varnish, for prints. The varnish is not glossy but restores the range and separation, leaving a soft luster surface. The full range of contrast allows tuning prints from a variety of negatives to the ideal presentation to evoke the mood I wish to convey. I use selenium toner, usually at 1:19, to tone from 2-7 minutes. The consistency and reliability of the paper, batch to batch, makes this paper stand out from others available in yet another way.

excellent paper if processed correctly
11 January 2024

I have used this paper to make prints of 5x7 negatives. For best results use the Ilford Warm tone developer or LPD. It does process with standard print developer but for best results use the warm tone developer. Keep in mind this paper is very slow, like double your usual exposure times and the time in the developer is 2-2.5 mins.
