There was muchos excitement all around when Ilford released this orthochromatic film a couple of months ago. And not wanting to miss out on the party, I grabbed myself a roll straight away.The talk was of fine grain, nice contrast and excellent tonality. And it did not disappoint…This film is amazing. It has absolutely gorgeous tonality with near non existent grain in the right light. The contrast is spot-on. Being an ortho film it doesn’t react to red whatsoever, so skin tones are a tad dark. But for landscape and detail-type shots - YUM YUM YUM!!!!These example shots were shot in Cornwall over the Christmas period; the weather wasn’t great - gloomy, misty, rainy…. but the Ortho took everything in its stride. I'm not sure I got the advertised lower grain but that might be to do with me home developing in Cinestill DF96. Still loved the film though. Really nice contrast and moody vibes. I used it to photograph my little boy playing in the sea like a swamp monster with an MJUII haha.

I experimented with various filters in various conditions and got some interesting results, most notably some self-portraits in-studio (hard to do on film, I admittedly slightly missed focus :c oh well). I used an 80a filter and, being an orthochromatic film, that combo made all my freckles and blemishes appear stronger. Very fun, definitely worth experimenting with further to get more honed results. Beware, even with a filter stopping down your light, it looks like it's easy to overexpose with strobes!Outdoors the landscapes had a striking contrast. I utilized green, yellow, and orange filters, but I honestly found no filters to have the best effect. I cannot express my love for this film stock enough. A low iso DX coded film I can shoot in almost anything.I usually buy those weird rolls of film without the big brand name, I love the surprise out of the box. But it's so great to have a reliable low iso film I can keep coming back to, the DX coding makes everything so much easier than finding a camera with 80 iso settings or manually using a light meter.A beautiful grainy contrasty delight. Perfect details for macro shots or even beautiful landscapes. The best I've shot in almost 4 years of film photography. I've got more of it in my basket just waiting to be bought.

For our Ilford Ortho Plus 80 120 film review we put a roll in the Hasselblad took it outside the house. This was shot during Lockdown, that’s as far as we could go!It was nice to be able to use the Hasselblad, even if it was taking photos of very familiar surroundings. We also were interested in what results we would get from orthochromatic film. Back in the day shooting at 80 ISO would have been considered a workaday speed, so unless you're shooting in especially bad light with a heavy camera you can usually work with this film outdoors, as long as you're keeping an eye on your shutter speed. It deserves more than just bright sunny days because its excelled on moody cloudy days at bringing out texture and detail. Sometimes in strong light it can be a tad too contrasty, unless that's your go to look in particular shoot. I love the dark foliage and strong landscapes it produces, and fine grain so I've quickly become a fan.

The light was reasonably good but the sky was quite overcast and featureless, so we decided to stay in the town rather than venturing towards the coast itself. pretty easy to use, I like discipline of working with a slow film though it had less if the vintage look I used to get with Agfa.Been using it for architectural shots, it's different colour sensitivity definitely brings out the brickwork/pointing.I'll definitely use it again...planning to get some 120 to try out in my 'new' Zeiss Ikonta.I also want to try pushing it to see what happens.It's the first film I've shot since going digital for work quite a while back.Moment of panic trying to remember how to develope film but once you smell the chemicals it all comes flooding back.
Although this no doubt is an orthoChromatic film and can mainly see greens and will not see reds, it seems to behave quite differently to the films I had used in the past .. when they were still widely available; says something about my real age;o) Could be a real stunner for landscapes but from other reviews I do not think many understands how the orthochromatic films behave (the promotional samples compared to reviews scans are quite telling.). I find it much denser and contrast heavy whatever the way you process it. It sports a good latitude if you process towards negatives; this film however is all about matching the process to the exposure style.
