A very pricey upgrade from X2
11 September 2022

I upgraded from the One X2, which I was very pleased with. I was expecting some pretty significant improvements considering the hefty price premium over the X2. Some things are impressive, others are not. Pros: Low light photo and video quality is noticeably better. The touch screen is larger than the X2 and easier to use (its also not round) The modular set up leaves me hopeful for add ons in the future. Cons: Overall video quality is not that much better, especially in sunny, outdoor conditions It’s not waterproof - which is both useful and very reassuring in a (essentially) $1k camera It’s much more bulky than the X2, so people notice it more and it’s harder to carry in a small sling It occasionally will not start recording and needs a reboot. I assume this can be fixed with an update The thickness of the camera can leave awkward “stitching” in close-up shots, since the two lenses are further apart from each other. Last but not least, about a week after purchasing this, the One X3 was released, with a larger sensor and touch screen, which would resolve most of my needs from the X2 - not a huge deal if I hadn’t just forked over a grand for this one and the aggressive return policy means I’m forced to keep it. HDR video apparently needs to be edited on the desktop app for proper color. Exporting from iPhone leaves colors WAY out of balance. Overall, a great camera. I was just spoiled by how inexpensive yet effective the One X2 is and I was expecting more. But any of these cameras are still the best “budget” 360 cameras on the market.

I purchased this camera to be able to take 360 photos whilst I was on our overseas holiday. I was so impressed of the simplicity of taking excellent quality photos which I could post on social media to inform friends at home and record my trip. The other process and delivery was extremely easy and efficient as I received the camera only several days after I ordered it with the fast international delivery by FedEx. The image compression technology on the internal SIM card is very space-saving; but still provides excellent high resolution images in good and low light. When you set to shoot in DNG/RAW and for 3 seconds it takes more that 5-6 second intervals between shots.Even with JPG there is still delay more then set parameter. If you set 7 sec intervals it takes 10 secs and so on. As I have noticed there is problem writing information to SD card. Before sending camera to Insta360 I asked other people to test Interval Mode and they have the same issue. I am lucky I have not listened to customer support and not sending the item back.I definitely recommend to buy X3 instead or go with other brand.

Great image quality for a 360 camera.
7 April 2023

Great image quality for a 360 cam. Getting used to the software and the whole concept of 360 photography takes a while but the variation in shots and angles you can get, makes it worth it. This camera is well built, performs well and probably best in class. However, if you are thinking of action sports or travelling with it, be aware it is susceptible to damage. The twin fish eye lenses protrude and are unprotected and they cant easily be replaced. Any spec of dust on them shows up on the final image. Finally, it's not water proof, only splash resistant so due care should be taken when using it.

Horrible Stich Line
5 January 2023

Overall I really like Insta 360 cameras and I find them to be superior products compared to GoPros. This camera and their other models are easy to use and, in my experience, much more reliable than GoPros. I also find this camera to be much more capable indoors and on cloudy days than the X3. However, on the one I have the stitch-line is just horrible and it always seems to cut a piece of my arm off. I hope that Insta 360 will fix this issue in future firmware updates.

Insta360 One Overheats Off
15 January 2023

Unfortunately, mine kept overheating and shutting down. I followed the instructions, used the recommended SD card and it would still overheat and shutdown. The modular design requires taking the camera apart to insert/remove sd card; and, the three modules do not stay together without using the silicon cover. The image quality was good in dim light conditions. Tried exchanging for the same one but it was discontinued and not sold in store. BestBuy is excellent as always: great employees, customer service and extended warranty. I will continue giving BestBuy my business.

Outstanding image quality!

The 1 Inch 360 Edition has outstanding image quality! I've only used it a few times, but wow the image quality is incredible. The lighting and detail in the PureShot mode is awesome. I'm using this solely for virtual tours, and maybe a short video now and again. It's replacing my Theta Z1 for this use case. I'm not using this for action shots, as it's not the product's best use case. I've removed 1 star for its penchant to heat up a bit more than I would like. I live in AZ, so it can get quite hot here. I think the current design of the case/sleeve holding the unit together could be improved. For example, maybe an aluminum frame with vent holes would improve it structurally, hold it more securely, and act as a heat sink. Thanks Insta360 for another outstanding product worthy of me dropping my Z1 by the wayside for virtual tours!

Different to the X3 that is a consumer model the 360 One RS 1-inch maximum bang for a fair price. Think of it like buying a base model Mercedes and an AMG Mercedes, both are great quality, however the later is on a different quality level. The main thing to think about is the sensor size… bigger size, means more light and greater quality of image. If you like night photography or shooting in paces where there is limited light, the 1-inch is for you. If you’re doing outdoor action style photography, then the X3 is perfectly suited.

The best 360 VR camera to date!

As other great reviewers have stated on line, the still and video images of this 1 inch sensor 360 VR camera are superb! Very clear and sharp. Low noise levels in lower light. Better then the smaller and lower cost 360 VR cameras out there. You will get what you pay for in this premium 360 VR camera! In using this the first time, I was amazed at how fast the stitching is done in-camera to create the file on the storage card....a few seconds, even when I was in the higher resolutions for video. (Long video sequences of course take a little longer to process, but, it's still a fast process).I do not see any stitching artifacts for still or video. Use that insta360 stick if you want minimal visibility of anything supporting this camera (like your hand!) The stick extends this camera to a point where the stitching will eliminate all or most of the stick and what is directly below the camera base to an extent. The RS 1 inch seems to handle that task -very- smoothly and effectively in processing images and video. The images for both still and video are very crisp and detailed. I own a Nikon Z 7II and Lumix GH6 and of course you can't compare all of these given such dynamic differences for sensorsand hardware, but, I will tell you, the Insta360 RS 1 inch hold its own for very clear and usable images. Add some decent light levels and it excels!I have yet to really analyze the audio and it's not (yet) a high priority. I'll be doing more stills then video initially. (If I need to emphasize audio, perhaps later I'll get a small wireless external mic if needed as well). The screen seems tiny as many have mentioned, but, when using the IOS or Android app and viewing remotely on your larger screen device, it resolves that issue. The limiting factor for me for the small screen isn't really a difficult time viewing it given it's small area,..., it is more using the touchscreen functions. If you have medium to larger fingers, the small screen might pose a challenge to use when swiping up, down, left or right. Not a show stopper, just a bit more challenging for those with larger fingers.Granted, you can use the app on an Android or Apple IOS device and other then basic setup and "favorite" setting you can select from, most everything can be done remotely using the app instead.Given the Insta360 RS 1 inch has a small and compact body profile for this Insta360 model, well, a small screen comes with that design. For stationary use or perhaps, indoors, one could use a larger iPad or similar android tablet for a larger viewing area if needed. The IOS wireless app (I use Apple devices) works smoothly and the wifi/blue-tooth connection has been 100% stable on my iPhone, iPAD 11 PRO and my iPad Mini as well.I wish the app was also available for OS/Macs to use in a wired mode and to my knowledge, aside from using an after-market adapter, there is no direct/wired cable connection method to use the RS 1 inch (USB-C to USB-C for Macs. Seems for now it is wireless connection only for Apple iPads and iPhones....and...-Insta360 states that on their website for the RS 1 Inch:"Note: This camera only supports wired connection to Android devices (via Micro-USB or Type-C). It does not support wired connection to iOS devices. Full wireless support is available for both iOS and Android". (They have a "quick connect" adapter I think is made for the Android wire connection method, but, for us Apple users, we are out of luck for now).Hello Insta360, there's a lot of us Apple device users out there too so come on; design and offer a wired app for Macs (OS and IOS) soon! I am sure you can do this if you want to!There are after-market adapters at Amazon that claim to allow a (Apple) wired connection using USB-C, but, no idea if they work and for now, I'm good just using wireless only and have no plans for now to try 3rd party electronics. The one inch sensor does make a huge difference in lower light. That's a standard concept for most all imaging devices. Large(r) area sensors equate to lower noise levels and better image quality in lower light levels. Granted, some cameras do not do well in lower light levels no matter so the rule isn't necessarily constant across all cameras, but, for the RS 1 inch specifically, in comparing it to my full frame Nikon and Micro-Four-Thirds Panasonic GH6, the RS 1 inch holds its own very, very well. The images look great even when I "pixel peep" (zoom in to view a small image area to critique). (The two 1 inch sensors of the 1 Inch 360 Edition are four times the size of sensors found in most all other 360 cameras). The camera does get warm in use, although not alarmingly hot, but, when shooting video for extended times, understand that the camera and processor/cpu is working hard and you can feel the heat being generated. Granted the battery gets warm just being charged, but, all in all, nothing I see that is alarming. I know some have said 20-30 minutes of use creates a lot of heat. I've not used it for that period of time, but, will probably do so at some point.I can't yet confirm the battery gets about an hour of video capture per specs, having not used it enough, but, many reviews seem to confirm the ~1 hour battery life for video is accurate. I assume still pics which tax the battery less will offer extended battery life past the 1 hour mark. (TBD). By the way, buy at least one spare battery, never take your camera anywhere without a backup so you can keep shooting! (Best Buy might stock it, Amazon does not sell the spare battery, but, B&H photo in NJ who I've purchased from many time, does and I got my spare from them.)To sum it up, this camera feels heavy and solid and well-made in the hand, offers unique and creative potential for VR enthusiasts. I own a Quest 2 and plan to research how to view the 360 VR files on it from this camera. I've read it can be done. It might require file conversions to make it work, but, I'm really looking forward to to playing around and to get this concept to work for me.I plan to update this review as I use this camera more in both still and video mode and explore all of the settings to try to find my sweet spot for set-up which to me, produces the best results. At ~$800 plus another $100-200 or so for accessories including a case, potential buyers need to know this is a speciality camera that excels in use per its design and for what it does quite well.I would -not- take the Insta360 RS 1 inch as the only travel camera and would as well pack my primary photo gear too, but, the Insta360 RS 1 inch -will- always be along with me when I travel or go out locally, ...for events and general subjects that warrant using a 360 VR type view.If you've made up your mind to buy a 360 degree VR camera, I highly recommend this one! Yes, it's (much) more expensive then some of the smaller sensor cameras out there, but, honestly, you will get what you pay for in image quality and low noise levels in low light. Also to note for you Apple addicts like me, there are several apps for iPhone and iPad to allow you to view 360 VR images directly contained in your iPhoto images. They work well and convert the 360 panoramic image from the insta360 to a true viewable 360 VR -look all around- type image.Lastly, I will say it again, the support and prompt response from customer support at Insta360 had been nothing less than exceptional. They want you to love and more importantly, keep an use this camera are are willing to assist if you have issues. No product is worth its cost or value without good customer support if you need it and do feel confident that the Insta360 team wants you to enjoy and more importantly keep and promote this camera to others and will promptly reply and assist you if ever needed. That's a big deal!So for now as I use this wonderful 360 VR camera, it is certainly worthy of a 5 star review. The Insta360 RS 1 inch is a speciality camera that can certainly excel for image quality and features for what it was designed to do and do so very well.Is it the best of the 360 VR camera out there right now? Yes, I think so. It's of course more expensive then the smaller sensor Insta360s or it's competition, but, if IQ/image quality is everything to you for both still photography and video (especially in low light) , it will be worth the investment over the much lower priced 360 VR cameras out there.I will update this review as needed over time!Thank you for taking the time to read and I hope this review helps you make your decision!
