A Matter Of Life And Death is the best Iron Maiden album since Powerslave

A Matter Of Life And Death is, i believe, one of the finest album in IRON MAIDEN's career. Album opener, Different World, is actually completely misleading similar in style to Wildest Dreams, it gives little indication of the beauty still to be unveiled. Instead it acts as a cloak to the rest of the record, one which when removed reveals an irresistible body of work underneath. Colossal in their scope, songs such as These Colours Dont Run and The Longest Day pull the listener down into the blood-trodden battlefield before spitting them out into the solemn peace of the grave. Bruce chants, screams and whispers wicked truths like an insightful overseer of a world torn affray. The guitarists too, are in rambunctious moods. The pinnacle of this spotless and impeccable musicianship is For The Greater Good Of God, a Harris-penned ten-minute masterpiece. Out Of The Shadows, is heavily reminiscent of Bruces solo work. I believe, what makes this album so incredible is every song is among the best IRON MAIDEN has recorded.

This is a very progressive CD showing the tightness and accuracy of the band. Very powerful CD. This new remaster, more than the CDs from Brave New World thru The Final Frontier, is a big improvement over the original CD with better frequency and quality.

Great Maiden album with some amazing songs. If you like Brave New World you’ll most likely like this album. The remaster really makes an otherwise muddy sounding album pop!

Iron Maiden - A Matter Of Life And Death
8 February 2008

Quite simply I gave up on metal (and Maiden) just after Seventh Son when Metallicas' last release was the "Black Album", Slayer's "Season's in the Abyss" and Queensryche's "Promised Land". I'm guessing that was sometime around 1993?!? Over the last couple of years I've started buying some of my old favourites again for what I thought were sentimental reasons as I had been led to belive that the above bands had fizzled out somewhat. Subsequently, my steadily regrowing metal collection was populated with pre 1993 titles that I knew were good from previous experience... As content as I have been with "So Far so good so what", "South of Heaven" and "Operation; Mind Crime" (of course) it wasn't until I was listening to Planet Rock one slightly drunken evening that I ... MoreQuite simply I gave up on metal (and Maiden) just after Seventh Son when Metallicas' last release was the "Black Album", Slayer's "Season's in the Abyss" and Queensryche's "Promised Land". As content as I have been with "So Far so good so what", "South of Heaven" and "Operation; Mind Crime" (of course) it wasn't until I was listening to Planet Rock one slightly drunken evening that I heard "The reincarnation of Ben....." and stumbled upstairs to buy the album on ebay for a laugh. As a 35 five year old I thought the closest I was ever going to get to any "new" Heavy metal was Linkin Park but how wrong I was. WHAT A FANTASTIC ALBUM. I feel like it's the eighties again and I've just bought my first Maiden album. I honestly thought they done all they could and after being put off by pop songs like Bring Your Daughter I am now firmly back in the camp. What's more I have a huge gap in my collection between Seventh Son and A Matter of... a gap I can't wait to fill. This album has completely restored my faith and enjoyment in Heavy Metal, it truly is Classic Maiden, just like I remember them, I can even smell Manchester Apollo and Donington '88 if I sniff hard enough. Furthermore, having attended a gig a week back in the day I'm proud to say that inspired by Maiden, I'm now more up to date and am going to see Queensryche in June. I might even grow my hair a bit. "take a look in the pool and what do you see............?"

Iron Maiden's finest hour (and a bit)?
9 April 2007

Iron Maiden have seemingly embraced their progressive rock influences, and this album is a melting pot. Refreshing isn't normally a word I would use of any album which is comprised primarily of songs over seven minutes long, but there is just such a diversity of melody and structure to these tracks that the album is never in particular danger of becoming dull. The opening track 'Different World' should leave nobody in any doubt that Iron Maiden can still combine melody with raw energy. Throughout this entire album the three guitars are utilised brilliantly, and this track is no exception. They don't just duplicate each other. Rather there's a multi-layered feel with something different to catch the ear at key moments. Adrian Smith uses a Gibson SG in this track, which gives his solo a real edge to it. 'These Colours Don't Run' seems to have emerged from a single line defiantly shouted by Bruce Dickinson at last year's Ozzfest fiasco, and while I'm not totally convinced by its grandiose sounding chorus the rest of it is melodically enticing. 'Brighter Than A Thousand Suns' is about the Manhattan Project which led to the development of the atomic bomb. In common with many other tracks on the album it combines delicate quiet passages with bowel shatteringly heavy moments in a combination which the band have captured perfectly this time round. All the quieter moments on this album sound much fuller and richer than at any previous time, and Bruce Dickinson's vocals are more sympathetic with the mood of the music than I've ever heard previously.'The Pilgrim' is briefer and more direct. An almost straightforward rocker with a fantastic chorus and the multilayered instrumentation again standing out. 'The Longest Day' is about the D-Day landings in 1944 and builds brilliantly. The lyrics at the beginning really help the dramatic build up. I haven't heard overt use of a guitar flanger since 1982s 'The Number of the Beast' and it's great to hear it used effectively at the beginning and end of this song. The instrumental break is frankly epic, with a spine tingling section which reminds me of the tail end of the instrumental section of 1983s 'Where Eagles Dare'. 'Out Of The Shadows' is reminiscent of 1992s 'Wasting Love' and as such I'm not enamoured with it. I thought the 1992 track was misguided. Fortunately this track is better, but if there is one weak song on this album then it's this one for me. The elusive Benjamin Breeg is next with its hard and heavy leading riff hitting the aural G-spot nicely. 'For the Greater Good of God' is another great epic. 'Lord of Light' has a beautiful intro belying the trademark Maiden gallop which follows, before it metamorphoses again. And 'The Legacy' is the most overtly progressive sounding track Maiden have ever done, showing Jethro Tull and Genesis influences among others. I have always considered Iron Maiden's 1980s albums to be their finest, but 2003s 'Dance of Death' supplied a few surprises that proved that they were far from being studio has-beens. But I wouldn't have dreamed that there was enough creative potential to create a 72 minute long album which is perilously close to being perfect. A real bolt out of the blue, with unparalleled musicianship from all concerned. Up the Irons.

[Rewarded Review] Another Strong Effort
30 August 2012

Iron Maiden has been around a long time. I've been a huge fan of Maiden circa late 70's and 80's. I only recently began to listen to their newer stuff after purchasing The Final Frontier. I was blown away! Not every band can continue to produce good albums. Though this CD does not contain winners on every track...Most are and that's good enough for me. As with any Maiden album...It's a journey. You'll learn a little history and rock out at the same time.

[Rewarded Review] Great Album
18 July 2013

I would say this is the best of Iron Maiden's recent 2000's albums. It's solid and joyful to listen to. They still have the complex music sound. Favorites songs are "Different World", "These Colors Don't Run", "The Pilgrim", "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg" - Which are all on the "Fear To Eternity" Greatest Hits Set. But the others songs on the album are worth it!

Great album. Not my favorite from the reunion era, but very strong (like pretty much all of their work from the past 20+ years. Vinyl is thick and sounds good. Plus it's always nice to be able to appreciate the album art on the large jacket.
