A well made, sturdy vice. Mounted on the bench in the garage it is perfect for those odd jobs where you need to clamp something securely. Good value for money and should last a lifetime.

Awesome bit of kit. Ideal for what I need, repairing bikes and general DIY. It is rock solid, very heavy duty and easily capable of much tougher work than I use it for.

The vice is very heavy and very well machined. It's absolutely solidly built and is very strong. The jaws are steel, rather than nylon, etc and the jaws are also quite sharp. They bite the work firm enough for hand filing with just one finger pressing the tightening arm. With a little more effort, you can crush a copper coin in half, without leaving a mark on the jaws.It comes with a little area directly above the mounting you could use as a miniature anvil. Smacking that area with a 4lb lump hammer just gives a dull thud, it completely absorbs the shock with it's huge mass.If I had to find fault with it, it'd be nice if the lever arm was longer and thicker. Not that that amount of grip would ever be needed, a quick tighten by hand and it grabs the work tight enough for most requirements.

I have been wanting a proper bench vice for the last few years. I bought a Stanley hobby vice which was ok, but it can be fiddly to use and sometimes comes loose when fitted to the bench and under heavy use. Enter Irwin... I got to check the quality of this against the Minotaur before buying... The Minotaur can swivel, which seems good until you try the mechanism. It was clunky and didn't wind in and out smoothly. The Irwin by comparison is a DREAM! The outright quality of this is amazing! It is so solid, and the jaws are super tight and properly aligned. Once fitted to my bench I knew this was the right choice. The only slight gripe was no instructions, and I didn't notice there was a third securing point until I bolted the first two on, as it sits underneath until ... MoreI have been wanting a proper bench vice for the last few years. The only slight gripe was no instructions, and I didn't notice there was a third securing point until I bolted the first two on, as it sits underneath until you extend the vice all the way out. It's not an issue once you know. Bottom line: FANTASTIC QUALITY and VERY STRONG!
This is a very well made vice with good solid and square jaws. There is no free movement of the jaws when clamping on just one side. Very pleased with it and would recommend to anyone with a small DIY workshop. It has already paid for itself by repairing a damaged lawnmower blade.
This vice was a replacement for a 35 year old Record 1 Ton vice made in Sheffield. 3 of them were aligned together. The new vice (made in China) had a different distance from it's front mounting holes so these needed to ground bigger to get it to align with the other 2 vices. Other than that it appears to be the same. Time will tell if there are other quality issues.
Great vice and reasonable price. Shame though that a Great British tool company now has to have this made and shipped from the other side of the world….Would be good if Toolstation sold decent soft/protective jaws for this vice too, not the useless ones (61073) I viewed when collecting vice, had to by these elsewhere.
I'm very happy with this purchase. Although Irwin Record Hand Tools are no longer made in the UK, they still carry a lifetime guarantee. And this vice is rated at 1 ton, so the lever bar is designed to bend if you exceed that. I was a bit concerned when I saw only 2 bolt holes in the picture, but rest assured there is another at the rear - all of them designed to take an M8 bolt. The screw doesn't turn quite as smoothly as I would like - I think it could do with a washer in between the spring and the vice body. But that will probably improve with use, otherwise I will fit a washer at a later date.
Bought a couple of weeks ago for my garage workbench. Looks well built.Very very little play and smooth movement and jaws clamp perfectly. So it’s a 👍 from me
Really good general purpose workshop vice. I have broken many other so called "heavy duty" ones of other marques, made in Germany & China. You could hit these Record I ton ones made in Sheffield England as hard as you like with a 7lb hammer to forge on the anvil and onto gripped items without effect. We'll see how we go with this made in China one. If it is made of cast Iron, and not steel like the Sheffield ones, it will break.
