Sometimes the one who loves you is the one who hurts you the most. Lily hasn't always had it easy, but that's never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She's come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up. She graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily's life suddenly seems almost too good to be true. Ryle is assertive, stubborn, and maybe even a little arrogant. He's also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily, but Ryle's complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan—her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is put to the test.

This book surprised me more than I thought I was prepared for. I found myself being able to relate to Lily throughout this story and the different places she was in. *TRIGGER WARNINGS -PHYSICAL ABUSE -SOME SEXUAL ABUSE DOES NOT GO INTO DESCRIPTIVE DETAIL BUT CAN STILL TRIGGER OLD WOUNDS. *POTENTIAL SPOILERS* When I was younger, I used to write in a journal as well. Especially to express some of the things I witnessed and experienced living within an abusive household. I will say that the fact that she wrote her journal entries specifically to Ellen Degeneres was a tad unbelievable. I understand what the author was trying to do in relation to her having an impact on Lilly, but I did find it somewhat annoying and repetitive. Often, I was wondering why she didn't leave...if not for her than for us kids. Even as I experienced more than Lilly, I very much witnessed very much the same for my mother. It definitely reminded me that some "wounds" can still burn. As for Ryle, I can understand why so many fell in love with his character. A handsome, very accomplished man who endured a life changing tragedy that affected him to this day. Which offers some what of the "I can change and/or save him ," trope. Until Lilly finds herself in similar shoes that her mother wore. She tries to decipher if she's following in her mother's footsteps but also trying to fight, not comparing her husband to her father. Herself to her mother. This part of Lilly's story offers an insight from a different perspective. Without spoiling much more...I will say I enjoyed this book. I related more to this Lilly than I realized, and I commend her for her decision. Some of the plot seemed a bit rushed, and some of the characters that seem to "show up" brought reality into question. I still enjoyed the read, however.

I devoured this book in literally, no exaggeration, six hours. I spent six hours straight just eating up the fast paced content of this book. And I think it's safe to say those six hours changed my life. This book tackled the subjects of domestic abuse and gaslighting so well, and especially how hard it is to face those kinds of challenges. I highly appreciate and admire that Colleen Hoover had the courage to get up and write this novel, despite it being very personal to her and was probably extremely emotional to write. This novel helps raise awareness of exactly how people going through or have gone through this kind of trauma REALLY feel. The book really captures how hard it is to escape those kinds of situations and not only that, but how to identify whenever ...Ā MoreI devoured this book in literally, no exaggeration, six hours. I devoured this book in less than a day, and the only reason it took that long is because I had to stop to cry. I didn’t realise what this book was about prior to reading this, so this book was quite triggering for me. Despite this, it made me feel seen and reassured me that my thoughts and feelings were normal when it comes to my experience with domestic violence, gaslighting and narcissist behaviour. I’d suggest this book to people who have a close one who has been through dv, because one of the hardest things for me was not having anyone that understood, and this book is written in a way that demonstrates a trauma bond, how quickly things can change and the reality of abuse. To those who have been through dv, it’s up to you whether you want to read it, but for me ...Ā MoreI devoured this book in less than a day, and the only reason it took that long is because I had to stop to cry. TW: dv ā€œSometimes it is the one who loves you who hurts you the mostā€ - this book absolutely made that clear and pulled some heartstrings too. I didn’t find this book to be another predictable romance and I wasn’t sure how it was going to end. It was definitely eye opening in regard to the different perspectives of domestic violence and what women (specifically women in this story) go through and the choices they have to make not just for their own well being but for their children. This book was emotional and it had me empathizing for the characters, even Ryle (which you’ll understand why I said ā€œevenā€ Ryle once you read the book). A story I fell in love with

I know this book has a ton of hype around it, so I want to touch on some of its downfalls as well as its triumphs. I'll preface this by saying, I do love the book and after finishing it, have not been able to get it off my mind. I fell in love with the characters (especially Atlas) and the story and think this is absolutely worth reading for anyone even mildly interested. I think that this book was written with the intention of being digestible for all readers. It touches on a sensitive subject and aims to teach (as the author states in the author's note). For this reason, it's clear the book is intended to be easy to read. I understand this, but I think it falls short in being TOO simplistic. For this reason, it's clear the book is intended to be easy to read. I understand this, but I think it falls short in being TOO simplistic. The writing often lacks personality as the sentences are so simply written. The characters are also undercharacterized. We don't get alot of depth in this book, just alot of movement in the plot. Even so, I wouldn't say the plot is unheard of, but I do think it's worth experiencing. Hoover includes random bits throughout the book that are meant to come off as quirky, exhibiting a less serious approach to literature. While I understand this, I wish these bits had worked to serve the plot (ex: The Ellen letters, the onesies, etc.). As for the message itself, I've seen alot of discourse online as to how she treats the sensitive subject matter at hand. I do think this book allowed me a level of perspective on these issues I wouldn't have otherwise had. However, I see that the book's ending and the perspective the book opens the reader up to can be a dangerous one, and can even make the reader more susceptible to these situations if internalized incorrectly. This is a bit difficult to explain without spoiling and/or using trigger words. The message of the book is essentially very blurry and very controversial.

I don’t get the hype over this book/author. It’s reminiscent of a teenager that only knows about romantic relationships from bad rom com movies. Not JUST for women
7 January 2023

I picked up this book assuming a romance novel. I enjoy unrealistic exaggerated romance novels, that are a fantasy of what love actually is. And for the first several chapters that’s what I got. But it isn’t. It’s a gut wrenching, heart clenching, emotional story of the hardships of love, loss, consequences, fear, pain, anger, and impossible decisions. This story isn’t just for women, while the cover may be deceiving. This is a story for anyone that’s been in love, and anyone that’s learned or is learning the hard way of how love can hurt you. It’s also for anyone who knows love that is so deserving, respectful and kind, and as an outsider can’t understand how those that don’t receive the same kind of compassionate, kind and respectful love don’t simply leave. For perspective. Lastly, it’s a story for those with the desire to break the cycle, for ourselves and generations that proceed us.
