The Landing Craft Mechanised (LCM) are probably the most famous landing craft in history and their profile is closely linked to the amphibious operations of the Allies in the Second World War, from Anzio to the beaches of Normandy. The LCM-3 version is certainly one of the most successful and effective. The design was simple and linear, but extremely rational. The large front loading ramp allowed the rapid unloading of a fully armed infantry team as well as a 30-tonne Sherman medium tank. The armour was very light to protect the diesel engine, allowing the LCM to reach a top speed of 8 knots, as well as the required crew for navigation and close defence, consisting of four men. Significantly, however, its cargo capacity and operational flexibility enabled the LCM-3 to secure an important place in 20th century military history.
