Not normally a Cab Sav drinker but sweet almost "pudding like" richness of this bottle made me change my thoughts re future purchase, so much so I took a bottle round to friends the next evening to educate them too! Ideal with the lamb they served we all were left wanting for more, wine not pudding!

Great year for Australian wines and whilst this isn't my favourite of wines, it is still a lovely, fresh, summer berry fruit driven Cabernet Sauvignon. Good to see Jacob's Creek doing something a bit different and it has paid off.

This wine represents fantastic value outperforming many cab savs at this price point i reckon and worth stepping up from the Jacob's Creek 'reserve' range. The double barrel maturing of the wine in whiskey barrels may seem a bit gimmicky but it actually does seem to give a greater depth of palate to the wine. It is incredibly smooth and drinkable with a slightly dusty mouth feel. At first i felt underwhelmed as the complexity didn't immediately shine through but leave it to breath for a while and the initially subtle character of the wine gives way to a complex palate of ripe cassis, olive tapenade and a touch of light toasty, smoky nature.

I normally steer away from Jacob's Creek but I was left pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this Cabernet Sauvignon. It is sweet and smooth with toasted caramel characters. A touch of mint adds to its vibrant & creamy depth. This Cabernet Sauvignon has a raw finish which keeps it honest and fun. A perfect complement to an evening with friends or family. We were all left with a certain sense of wanting more.

This is a great wine that is given an extra dimension from the subtle undercurrents imbued by the whiskey barrel. An interesting wine that is bound to spark debate around the dinner table!

The idea of maturing wines in used spirit barrels is not a new one, I read that this had been done as far back as the 1950s in Australia, probably longer elsewhere, but it's certainly an interesting unique selling point added to the Jacobs Creek line up. I fear that those who do not identify as Whiskey drinkers might avoid this range, which would be a shame as they would be missing out on something worthwhile. My first impression when taking a big sniff, was that you could smell the Whiskey barrel, though I am not sure if it was my imagination/wishful thinking or if it was really there, but either way there is plenty of fruit on the nose along with some woody/earthy and smoky notes. This is a full bodied and rich wine, lots going on in the glass. There is the potential that there is too much happening, but I felt myself getting drawn back into it and enjoying every mouthful. I tried this over a couple of days, and it hadn't settled too much at all on the second day. The tannins are pretty full on, and some people might find this a bit of a turn off, though not me, I like bold tannins. I enjoyed it, and I think it's worth popping some away to see how it fares when it calms its youthful exuberance a bit. Even better would be a side by side of the base wine without the barrel aging so you could see for yourself what the barrel influence is, but not sure how you could get that opportunity.

Excellent Cab Sav
16 September 2016

This excellent wine has aromas of rich plum, black currant and dark chocolate. A complex mixture of flavours with cassis, red plum and cherry being prominent. It has a dry smooth finish with a hint of Irish whiskey. A thick prime rib with peppercorn sauce would accompany this nicely.

NOT FOR ME!
16 August 2021

I've wanted to try this for sometime. I eventually bought two bottles. I opened the first and didn't like it.the taste was different and not for me. I struggled to finish it and gave the second bottle away. Don't let this put you off everyone's taste is different otherwise we would all be chasing the same woman. The guy I gave it to really enjoyed it.

Smooth drop
31 July 2020

Wanted to break the dry July drought with a decent drop and the “aged in Irish whiskey barrels” caught my attention. If I was going to break the drought a day early, it had to be on something good! Thoroughly enjoyed this bottle- smooth wine with a pleasant aftertaste.
