As a Scotsman, I started my "whiskey adventure" years ago with single malts and ended up preferring American products.....bourbons and ryes. Lately, I've enjoyed a number of Irish whiskeys and this one hits all the right notes: Subtle vanilla, not too hot and a somewhat complex overall flavor profile. I like it best with one ice cube and a few minutes to "settle down." I'm now a Jameson fan. BTW: My last name is Jamieson.

I recently bought 2 bottles of whiskey. Winter wants every 21 and over man and woman to have a favorite whiskey in the house. First I bought the black label which is quite good and goes down easy. But I was not satisfied. The flavor was not lingering. So I returned and bought a bottle of Green Spot whiskey which had been aged in a wine barrel. Hold the presses. I had my first little glass sitting on the patio watching the rain. The flavor lingered and lingered and lingered. Buy them both and see what you think. I call them delightful and delicious.
We have visited Ireland several times and the last time, finally made it to the Jameson distillery. That gave us the opportunity to taste a variety of Jameson's whiskeys, all of which were distinctive and delicious. However, I tried Black Barrel about 5 years ago at a friend's house and it immediately became my favorite Irish whiskey. Smooth and rich... a perfect sipping whiskey. It's always front and center on our home bar in a decanter with a JBB hanger that came on the first bottle I bought.Last Summer we bought an Irish Terrier puppy. With Black Barrel as our "house pour" for Irish Whiskey, we named him... what else... Jameson. Friends and family love his name, which has led to many tastings of Black Barrel in our kitchen.
Jameson Black Barrel isn't exactly my favorite flavor of whiskey but for the price it's incredibly smooth. I would honestly compare its smoothness to a 10-12 year aged Irish Whiskey. If you like heavy vanilla smokey flavor this might become your new go-to. For me it's not exactly doing what I'm looking for. Just because it's not my cup-of-tea though doesn't mean I can't recognize that its very well crafted, easy to drink overall, and its smoothness is impressive to say the least.
Used to buy Balvenie Double Cask till the price topped $60. Tried regular Jameson because.. well I'm Irish so give it a shot (pun alert). Wasn't thrilled. A little 'one dimensional' I thought.. So tried Black Barrel.. It's now my go to dram! Takes a little longer to open up, but when it does (whisper 'water' in it's vicinity, not too loudly) it's great! Sublime vanilla/butterscotch nose, sweet oak and fruit notes.. The longer you indulge, the more you find.. and it changes as it opens. Growing into REAL cinnamon.. (The sweet genuine stuff.. not the bitter common substitute)Palate is just as complex with a welcome intensity and warmth... spicy/cinnamon, full with vanilla and butterscotch.. maybe a little nougat.. and hints of citrus and floral..Enjoy slowly as it ... MoreUsed to buy Balvenie Double Cask till the price topped $60. My 'amateur' opinion... start at a couple in inches above the glass and enjoy the complex with your eyes closed.. pick out and try to define what you find.. then move down to an inch and repeat.. THEN put your nose in the glass... then reverse the process.. finally taking a sip.I go really slow with only a small sip.. just enough to swish around and swallow for experience as I find alcohol can bring on a migraine.. so I have to be careful... but to me it adds a note of potential danger to the process :-)So there's my review.. overlong and seemingly pretentious as it may be.. and I hesitated to include so many superlatives as they will probably raise the prices as did the scotchers... ENJOY!!!!!!
My friend loved the gift packaged in an elegant velvet bag which is optional. Of course I wanted that special touch. Instead of me guessing when to have it delivered to be accepted in person, he appreciated that he could select the date and time to work with his schedule. Because of him, I'm now a Jameson girl. How do we describe Black Barrel? Smooth. Rich, Sexy. And, aways on the rocks.
I bought two items online with curbside pick-up: Jameson Black Barrel whiskey and Cais da Ribeira Douro Red Reserva Port Barrel Aged wine.BOTH bottles had disintegrating corks! The wine had particles in it and immediately smelled/tasted bad. The whiskey’s cork split in half, with the bottom part dropping into the liquid. The taste was not immediately noticeable, but had a bitter aftertaste.How can two completely different brands/beverages have the same problem….unless Total Wine is storing them improperly and/or sleeping on quality control procedures?!?!Super disappointed, can’t image shopping here again.

It is packaged at 40% ABV (80°) and not difficult to find.Enough of the background; let's see how well I spent my money and #DrinkCurious.Appearance: Poured neat in my Glencairn glass, Black Barrel was the color of bronze. It formed a medium rim that released very fat, quick legs that crashed back into the pool.Nose: The air was very fruity before I even brought the glass to my face. What I found was genuinely tropical with pineapple, coconut, and banana. Loads of banana. Apple and malt were easily discernable as well. When I brought the aroma into my mouth, it came across as malted milk.Palate: The mouthfeel was incredibly smooth (I know some folks hate that term) and silky. It filled everywhere in my mouth but wasn't weighty. The front featured caramel, coconut, and allspice. Stewed peaches and vanilla cream were in the middle, and the back gave flavors of cinnamon, nuts, and char.Finish: Medium-to-long in duration, the finish offered pineapple, apricot, banana bread, milk chocolate, char, and sweet tobacco.Bottle, Bar, or Bust: This is very likely the best $7.00 I've spent on a bottle of whiskey. I have no idea why this was on the store's clearance rack, but I'm thankful for the opportunity. I loved everything about Jameson Black Barrel except for one thing. I really adored the finish and wanted it to last longer. Now, as far as a $34.99 bottle goes, I'd still rank it a Bottle all day long.
