I was searching for an urban-use backpack and the Jansport Odyssey 39 hit almost every target. The fabric feels solid and rugged, the straps and padding are comfortable, the sternum strap is a must-have, and even though I don't use them, the waist straps are nice to have, and tuck away into the bag neatly if you don't like them. This bag also has probably one of the best utility pocket/organizers to place pens and stationery in any bag I've seen so far. The daisy chain and loop are all centered in the middle of the bag to evenly distribute weight, which is a mistake other bags make. The main reason why this bag loses a star is the size. The compartments are roomy and nicely divided, but I don't think it's 39L. I have two other bags rated at 36L that are larger than ... I'd give this bag 4.5 stars if I could, but I would still recommend this bag as fantastic value for money if the size isn't an issue for you.

Bought this for my daughter, as all other backpacks never make it a year with the amount of things she needs to carry. Her pack is routinely has 40-45 lbs, & this pack has held up incredible for high school. I have the same one (after seeing how big, durable and well-made beer is) & it's my "everything" for travel. The pockets are incredibly roomy, it LOOKS great, and it's so comfortable!! Actually, this is now being used as a travel replacement for my Jansport pack I've had since MY undergrad years!! My son's backpack (supposedly a great camping backpack) started falling apart after one year in middle school. The sheer volume of things they need to carry is insane, so I'm investing in another one of these for him! I'm sure it'll last & work great like the two we ... The dimensions for this backpack are incorrect. It is not 12" deep. It is more like 8" deep. This bag is barely larger that the Jansport Agave we own. We are returning this bag bc it does not fit our intended need. We bought it for my high schooler to carry his laptop, 3" binder, pencil case, headphones, small lunch and a book to read. It wouldn't fit these items even with stacking things vertically bc it is still too shallow.Prior to my purchase I had verified with Customer Service via email, chat and by phone the depth and was assured it was 12" deep. I had previously bought an Odyssey from Cabela's (bc they were on back order directly from Jansport for months) and when I received it the Cabela's Odyssey was much smaller than I anticipated. So I looked at the dimensions on the Cabela site I realized that their dimensions state it is only 7" deep. This lead me to be diligent in confirming with Jansport the dimensions. They assured me that the Odyssey they sell was not the same size as the one they make for Cabela's. Unfortunately they are both relatively the same size and customer service was obviously not confirming the size other than looking at the same incorrect information I could see on the website.I am awaiting my shipping label to send this bag back but that was a challenging process too. At first was told I would have to pay shipping if I wanted to return it. Customer service was less than helpful in helping me find a replacement bag or offering any solution. When I pointed out that I have an email from them confirming it was supposed to be bigger than what I was sent that they finally agreed to pay for the return. We shall see if they hold up that agreement.

The fabric looks light but feels very durable; it's a pleasant surprise. The textured black looks very good. The compartments have enough room front-to-back so I can reach all the way to the bottom. The laptop pocket fits my 15" Mac, though it really should have more padding across its bottom (where the full weight of the computer presses downward). The tablet pocket is great: I can fit an old iPad and a small Kindle (in a homemade leather wrapper) in there no problem.I have a 40-ounce insulated water bottle, but it won't go into the pouches on the sides of the bag. A plastic 600ml insulated bottle fits, though, so I only have to carry the big one.I tend to load my backpack up with a bunch of stuff every day for my commute, and the straps make the bag feel ... A plastic 600ml insulated bottle fits, though, so I only have to carry the big one.I tend to load my backpack up with a bunch of stuff every day for my commute, and the straps make the bag feel lighter -- they really are fantastic.I wish the pen loops had a bottom, in case the pen cap falls off or if I put something in there that could drop through. The zipper for the small pocket at the very top gets caught under the carry handle, which is annoying -- but if that's the worst thing about the bag then it really is a good backpack!
I love this backpack for everyday use. I have nerve damage in my neck and this backpack feels great when wearing. This is my second one. My kids accidentally put my first in the dryer and it fell apart and melted. The only thing I don't like about this new one is that it only comes in all black. I highly recommend this backpack. 👍
The main pocket zipper already catches occasionally in one direction and I have only used it for a few days. Interior is now white. Pockets moved. Not a fan of the new locations of most. White will show dust quickly, I expect. I hope it lasts as long as my old one. Only thing wrong with the old one was at least two of the zippers didn't want to hold anymore. Really this is too early to provide any time tested feedback, but zipper catching is not getting my hopes up.
Wonderful backpack for college student. Weekday scholar to weekend adventurer all in one bag! Great quality, versatile, excellent support, and I love the hideaway hip pads that actually have padding. Shoulder strap padding is also excellent. 2nd time buying this model…the first time 20 years ago for myself for college, and now I bought this one for my niece for college. Mine from 20 years ago is still my go to daypack. This one seems just as well made. Hoping for 20+ years out of it too!!!
My daughter used this ODYSSEY as a backpack for school. It let her down and it ripped at the top area, I believe it might of ripped from being hung on a school hook. I am very disappointed in JS for not repairing my daughters backpack. I have spent a lot of money with JS over the years because you have the best book bags on the MARKET. However, you have lost a customer because your lifetime warranty is a gimmick. You should of made it right and repaired my daughter book bag.
I've been using it mainly for carrying groceries for the last four years. A prong on the chest buckle broke two winters ago and Jansport's warranty quickly got it fixed (I was outside for half an hour and it was in the minus teens Celsius. The replacement part was brown instead of the original blue). The major problem with it is the material they've used to cover the pads that touch your back. In particular the lumbar one. After about ten hours of cumulative use (per shirt) with a sweaty back and moderate load, it would create enough pilling and discoloration to ruin the shirt. After the first summer I had to replace every t-shirt I had.If you're back doesn't get sweaty and you carry only light loads, then maybe you'll get more mileage out of your shirts. If not, ... this is such a great pack. though it could be more durable. The lifetime guarantee is important, because it seems to only last about 4-6 years of everyday use before it begins o fall apart. i think JS should consider making an extra durable version- all thick zippers, seams like a tank etcthat being said it is small enough to use everyday and it doesnt scream "steal me", but large enough to use for 1 week trips. it is very versitile and worth every penny. nicely designed with lots of hooks and things. and you can either user the belt or tuck it in and have it disappear.
