A powerful portable that slaps

The JBL Authentics 300 is a powerhouse of a portable speaker. The subwoofer is deep and full, and the tweeters definitely do their job. The home connection is solid, and it's cool I can use it as a home speaker, but I see it more as a portable speaker. With 8 hours of battery life, which I did test during a camping weekend, it's definitely for the outdoors. At about 15lbs, it's a beast, but thankfully got a handle that doesn't kill your hand. Carrying it around wasn't bad at all, and definitely worth it when we were at the lake or at the cabin. This thing gets loud, and it's awesome. The bass hits hard, so listening to EPROM or Alix Perez (or both) was amazing. I know there is a Boombox, but this thing is The Boombox.I listen to a lot of genres, so this speaker ... MoreThe JBL Authentics 300 is a powerhouse of a portable speaker. The bass hits hard, so listening to EPROM or Alix Perez (or both) was amazing. I know there is a Boombox, but this thing is The Boombox.I listen to a lot of genres, so this speaker has been putting in work. The sound is well balanced, and the treble and bass knobs are nice to have, but the knob that's missing is mids. I know the 500 has a midrange array, and I wish this one did too. The tweeters do a great job, and the bass helps do some extra lifting, but when this thing is turned up a good amount, the bass can mud up the tweeters. Even with this missing part, the speaker still sounds full and warm across genres, and it's definitely got a kick with anything bass heavy. You can fuel a party with this one speaker for sure. With treble heavy songs, this thing shines. The sub does exactly what it needs to accentuate the highs, and the tweeters are crisp and clean. All in all this is the best portable speaker I've ever had. I love bringing it around, it sounds solid in any environment, and it's got awesome sound. My main gripes are the Heart Button, which will cycle favorite playlists, but only on kind of obscure streaming services. I wish it was a like button for longs you're listening to, or that it at least worked with Spotify or Apple Music. Also, the sound knob is a bit touchy when connected Bluetooth to the phone, as it's not clicky and can shoot your volume up real loud if you're not careful.Love the speaker, and you will too! This has been my review!

I really love this speaker. Great sound that can really get after it. Classic retro style looks have a real nice touch to it. Brass looking accents on the handle and face are a nice touch. Leather(?) housing is sweet. The dials light up when you turn them, for example the volume or bass and treble settings so you can tell where you're at on those levels. Nice handle for carrying. The face of it has a textured squared feel that feels old school. It's cool that it is also a wifi speaker, so you can use Google or Alexa assistants. The only downfall is that it has to be turned on to use those functions, but I don't use them much anyway so no big deal. The subwoofer on the bottom is really nice. The nice thing is though you don't have to turn it all the way up to hear the bass, it has a very rich sound without having to rattle the house if you don't want to. It was very easy to set up using the JBL One app, took me all of 3 minutes to have it set up and running all the features. Again, the styling of it is terrific, it's a nice edition to any room. Definitely not a speaker you'd want to take to a beach or something like that, as the woofer is on the bottom facing down, you wouldn't want to get it sandy or wet, but it's great outside on stand of some kind if you want to take it outside.

With that said, if you plan on needing extra volume and bass or will be playing the music outside, I would suggest JBL's partybox.Other features include the use of the JBL app and connectivity to wifi, which allows it to receive updates through the JBL app and enables Alexa and Google Assistant playback. One criticism I have is the amount of JBL apps, it took me a few minutes to figure out which app I needed because their are so many! JBL could streamline this process with one main app. Overall, this speaker is great to have if you want style, a classic look, and great sound quality all in one. It excels at looking the best and having the best sound for the size and I would definitely recommend it.

Great style and sound

The JBL Authentics 300 packs style, portability, ease of use, and fantastic sound into a single compact package. While unboxing, I first noticed the quality packing job. JBL paid attention to this speaker's appearance, and the packaging ensured it arrived looking its best. The second thing I noticed was how amazing this speaker sounds. I found myself jamming out all night, exploring song after song, artist after artist, and savoring every note. Whether you're listening to 90's Funk, Yacht Rock, Jazz Standards, or singing along to the Original Broadway Cast Recording of Hamilton--you will be impressed with the range of this speaker. And while the range didn't go low enough to handle the deepest bass in my EDM tracks, nor can it render spatial audio sources, it will still sound great for almost anything it plays. This speaker looks terrific in my husband’s office. He loves the vintage style. The gold finish, the faux leather, and the cube design of the front grille mean the JBL Authentics will complement any mid-century modern style home. You choose whether it blends in or becomes a functional statement piece. No matter where you decide to feature this speaker, it will pack a musical punch and look great at the same time. The integrated handle and battery mean this speaker easily follows you to the backyard or wherever your day may take you. Moreover, the built-in Assistants (Alexa or Google, your choice!) mean this speaker can easily replace your smart device. (I still need to figure out how to switch between profiles, though, so you may have better luck.)I admit that I've become used to the equalizer in the Spotify app, but I've found that this equalizer does not work when playing over WiFi. This is not a problem for this speaker, though, because the JBL App gives you complete control over the speaker.I'll end by saying again that this speaker looks great and sounds great too. While it certainly won't replace a large soundbar, it will fill your office, den, or bedroom with superb sound, and be a fabulous statement piece at the same time.

JBL Authentics 300 - wanted to love it...
20 September 2023

I have had several Bluetooth speakers, but most have been small, with limited battery life and limited bass and dynamic range. So I was excited when the JBL Authentics 300 became available. The product did not disappoint in both these areas. The speaker can work via cord or battery and has so far had a great battery life. The bass response has been amazing. The styling, both in the overall look and the controls is pure JBL: very high class. Unfortunately, I couldn't give it a 5 star rating. The speaker performed fairly well with most classical music, but the range and response with rock, especially classic rock and hip-hop, can only be described as "muddy." I wanted a speaker for both home use, especially outdoors at the beach or pool, and also for use in the Operating Room (see photo). Several people listened with me and also agreed. The distinct snap of hi-hats, cymbals, claps, etc. was all but lost - no matter how the bass and treble were adjusted. Maybe this was just a problem with the individual unit I received; every pair of JBL headphones or ear buds I own have had really impressive sound. The other negative I guess, is the sheer weight of the unit. Its really heavy if you want something to lug around. While that may be a necessity due to large magnets and speakers, it could be a pain.

Multiple speakers can be connected as well. As you would expect, Alexa and Google are built-in. I was a bit disappointed that there was no Dolby Atmos given the price point. You don't need to check for any system updates, as those are downloaded automatically when you turn the 300 on. Battery life is exceptional at 8 hours playback.. Approx 3 hour charge time. All things considered, the Authentics 300 is a powerful speaker and allows you to adjust the sound as you prefer, not JBL. This is a quality unit, so expect to pay reasonably for the quality.

Retrograde style, state of the art functionality
9 October 2023

The new Authentics line of speakers are the kind of "styling centric" design that I'd expect to give a bit of a pass to regarding sound quality or function because they are just so darn good looking. Yes, they are going for a so called "retro" look harking back perhaps to the mid 60's. But I believe there is a reason there is an appeal for many that isn't simply nostalgic. The leather like covering, the black hard foam acoustic grid front cover, the gold trim. It's just a classy look for those looking for classy. But it still packs the latest in technology from Bluetooth to voice assistants, wi-fi to ethernet, multi-room speaker pairing to app based control (and firmware updates which should translate to a longer life cycle with all of these bells and whistles). Sound wise, the 300 is the mid-size in the line, and the only one with a carry handle and re-chargeable battery. At 100W, it has a reasonable amount of power and sound projection but I wouldn't call it a "boom box" and certainly not a "loud speaker". Much like it's styling I find it falls into a niche spot for a living room or other mid-size space (anything smaller than 40x40') and would make a nice patio/deck speaker for someone that wants to sit outside with some music, maybe a small dinner party but not a pool-side party with screaming kids. It's just not that kind of loud. I really need (and want) to spend more time with this speaker under casual use before I form a complete opinion on its sound quality. So far I'd say "good" (on a 3 step scale of "ok" to "great") but I find sometimes speakers need a "burn in period" before they really reach their full sound potential and I just haven't had that much time with it (~15 hours of listening time thus far). I will note that the built in EQ for the app offers more adjustment than the standard treble/bass buttons on the unit. So why the buttons are convenient, I find myself purposely going to the app to use the full EQ. Overall I'm very satisfied with this speaker so far but it has only peaked my interest further on the 500 model in this series. I'm going to assume if you don't need the portability, the 500 with it's 270W applifier would be an even more impressive experience. (And it's the only one that supports Dolby Atmos.)

Very classy speaker with powerful sound

Overall Quality & Feel & Important Features:The speaker is very well-made. You can easily tell that it was crafted, designed, and assembled with great attention to detail at first glance. This is hard to say with many products out in the market but certainly, this is not one of them. The leather-like coating around the speaker and the gold accents feel very high quality, adding a very luxurious touch. The same applies to the hinges of the carrying handle, buttons, and the front of the speaker. The hinge feels very sturdy, and it does not move easily. The buttons glide very smoothly, and they have LED indicators around them that illuminate when rotated and act as a sound/bass/treble level indicator. The individual treble and bass buttons work perfectly. They definitely enhance the listening experience and make it easy to adjust for different genres on the spot. The big play button also serves as a stop/next/previous function, making it easy to control the songs. There was not a very noticeable lag with the main play button either. It was very responsive when it came to pausing and resuming tracks which was very satisfying. Moving on to the battery, eight hours seems very reasonable. I never fully drained the battery, but it did last for a long time despite blasting music on full volume for a few hours. The charging cable is also long. Yes, it is a random detail that could be unnecessary for some people; but the cable is long enough that you can charge the speaker on top of a shelf, desk, tv stand, etc. without the need for an extension cord or moving the speaker. Essentially, you can use the AC-powered mode very easily. However, the speaker is quite heavy, especially when its size is taken into consideration. The hinge was most likely added to make it more on-the-go, take-it-anywhere style of speaker but personally, I would not go around with this speaker in my hand often. Visually, this is easily the best JBL speaker I have owned but if I am taking out my speaker for fun, I am going with my Partybox or Charge speakers. This speaker is way too classy for the outside environment in most cases and since it feels like a fragile box. It might take a while to get used to, at least from my perspective.____________The Spotify Connect, JBL One App, Google Assistant, and Wi-Fi Connection: Authentics 300 has a microphone on/off switch in the back which is the cherry on top. If you do not wish to have either Google or Amazon assistants constantly listen to you, that is a great option which I am using frequently. I set up the Google assistant and it works perfectly. It worked better once my Spotify account was connected via the Google Home app as well. It can play my personal playlists on there or suggest tracks based on my listening preferences which is very convenient. Just like with some other speakers, people with other mobile devices can join a group listening session as well and add their songs to the queue or have basic controls over the speaker/music. *One thing to note: If the in-app music feature is being used, and you directly go to Spotify to quickly change songs, it takes a while for Spotify/JBL One App to recognize and react accordingly to the request which was a bit odd. For instance, although I skipped three songs, the same song was still playing, and it switched to the next song on my fourth attempt. Then, since the songs are playing through the JBL One app, you cannot go to Spotify and add your newly discovered songs to your lists. You must transfer that song to Spotify and then add (this only applies if you are playing music through JBL’s app). The Wi-Fi connection through the app works great as well. The speaker automatically checks for any available software updates and executes the update once approved. However, I do not think that the JBL One App is essential or important. It does not offer much or add to the listening experience other than the in-app music, unlike the JBL Portable or JBL Headphones apps for other JBL products.***Supported Music Services for In-App Music: Amazon, Calm Radio, iHeartRadio, Napster, Qobuz, TIDAL, and TuneIn.____________Audio Quality:Just like any other JBL product, there was no surprise in this category. The sound is very clear, and the quality is superb and the fact that the treble and bass can be adjusted right on the speaker, makes the product much more appealing. The speaker gets very loud, you can feel the power of the 25mm tweeters, and they are loud enough to comfortably fill a big living room. The down-firing passive radiator is very powerful as well. You can truly feel the bass and it produces a very punchy, deep, and addictive lows/kicks/bass. There is almost no distortion or blown-out EQs at the highest volume level with this speaker. Therefore, playing songs at the highest level did not interfere with the sound quality which was amazing. Overall, the kicks feel punchier and crispier in electronic dance music, 808s vibrate the surface that the speaker is placed on when playing rap and the saxophone was present in my soul when listening to jazz music.____________Overall, it is a very well-made speaker with great aesthetics, sound quality, and certain features. The EQ knobs/wheels on top of the speaker, virtual assistants, Spotify Connect, and the carrying handle are very useful. I would recommend this speaker for decoration, indoor and garden/backyard usage. It is a wonderful portable addition to the living room and the additional features make it more than just a simple speaker. However, if you are not in the market for a “good-looking” speaker with a handle, ac-power option, or virtual assistants, then this might not be the best option for you as JBL manufactures various speakers to cater different tastes, price points, and other consumer needs. But again, what it is made for, this is an amazing speaker!
