I received this brand new JBL Flip 6 and of course as everyone else does immediately removed it from the box and packaging and synced it to my phone. I quickly noticed a heavy crackling sound when the bass kicked in, it sounded awful at all volumes. I updated the firmware and adjusted my EQ settings to check if it was an “user error” issue, it was not. Thinking it was perhaps a loose wire or connector I opened the device and found that the plastic white housing underneath the power and Bluetooth buttons was cracked, it appeared that the screws had been over torqued from the factory causing the plastic to split. I applied a significant amount of silicone around the cracked areas of plastic and let it cure, it’s now much better. I will be purchasing from a different ... Made a mistake in assuming JBL would make a high-quality speaker. Our second mistake was buying that speaker from Target, since their customer service is basically nonexistent. We started using the speaker and thought the sound was OK, but something seemed off with the bass, but then we played the same songs side-by-side with our Sony Bluetooth speaker (about the same size) and noticed that the Sony sound was significantly clearer and had none of the deep bass reverb noise that was evident on the JBL. The JBL literally has a deep bass speaker rattle. Once you notice that, the speaker will drive you crazy. I’ve had problems with electronics from other stores, and generally they’ve been flexible when a product clearly doesn’t perform well. Target is the least helpful ... I predominantly listen to audiobooks & podcasts, so volume & clarity are key - this beauty does not disappoint in either aspect. I'm an indie producer, so I generally appreciate any device or medium that provide the song in the way the producer wanted the song to jam. This has a nice flat response from what I'm able to hear verses the reference tracks I use in the studio. You really are hearing a lot of small instrumentation without EQ'ing.I've heard the 5, and they are voiced the same, but this has an additional tweeter so you can get those tasty mids and high mids, which are usually left in a blah place with portables.Long story short: independent music producer and multi-instrumentalist is quite happy with the product.
