App Uses up a Bluetooth Connection

better than 4.1 found on my Charge 3. There is lag if watching a video but it is greatly improved and is less distracting than the Charge 3. I love that the speaker is water

Nowhere is it mentioned that this is the case, and I spent an hour trying to figure out what the problem was, as the app kicked my computer off the Bluetooth every time. I did finally manage to get it to work, but the problem still remains that you cannot customize the lights and play music from two devices as advertised. This is a cruel form of miscommunication to the customer and well hidden. I watched several reviews before buying and no one mentioned this. I cannot believe JBL got away with this for over a year. Seriously guys, either make this known to the customer before purchasing or don't advertise the two phone feature without an asterisk denoting the limit it has on the light show - the reason I bought the speaker in the first place.... I don't care so much about playing music from both sources, but I'd like to use the app control features (changing the lightshow, brightness) while my Echo is playing music, and cannot because this feature doesn't seem to work.Second, what the app does and doesn't do is frustrating. With the onboard buttons I can disable the lightshow (for sleeping at night) but the app won't do the same. What the app DOES do is let me lower the brightness, which is something I am unable to do directly with the speaker. Why can't I do both on both? Seems like an obvious oversight on JBL's part.Additionally, the app should be able to adjust the volume of the speaker... it doesn't do this simple task. Once again, seems like a huge oversight. Finally, the lightshow is very dependent on the input volume. Since I can only control the volume remotely from my Echo and not for the speaker itself, I like to keep the volume up all the way on the speaker and then adjust the volume via voice commands on the Echo. Because of this setup, the lightshow often doesn't "hear" the music loud enough to actually trigger, and I just get it flashing randomly, slowly, and not at all to the music. Why doesn't the app include something as simple as gain adjustment for the lightshow so it reacts at lower volumes? Once again, a total oversight.Overall I'm happy with this speaker when I travel and use my phone to play music over it, however I'm much less happy with the setup I'm trying to use it with at home. Whether I'd recommend it to friends really depends on what they're looking for. I wanted a techy light show and a good speaker with versatile control options, I think this speaker falls short for that, unfortunately.... Show more

I can have it in the shower with me or next to me while taking a bath without any worries. I can take it to the pool and have it next to me while lounging on a floaty and if it falls into the pool no worries. The lightshow is fun. You can customize the pattern, brightness and color to your preference. The only thing I would like is an option for the turning the lightshow off completely. Sometimes I like playing relaxing music while falling asleep and the lights are distracting. Also, I think the battery life would be better if you could turn off the lightshow. Hopefully there will be an update to have this option. As for my other gripes: I don’t like how the speaker can only be set upright and has a narrow base. If it’s sitting on a table that gets bumped it can topple over easily. So I wish it had a wider base or could be set on its side like the Charge 3. The hard plastic shell that displays the light show is not protected. If you drop it it’s likely to get scratched. JBL should make some sort of protective cover for it that you can purchase. Another reason to make sure to set the speaker on a stable surface. I don’t care for the buttons at all. For one, you have to stabilize the speaking to press any of the buttons either by holding with the other hand or completely grabbing the speaker entirely with the hand at which is pressing the buttons. If you just try to push any of the buttons without stabilizing the speaker it will topple over. The Charge 3 had the buttons on top and I can pressed as hard as needed without the speaker moving. Additionally, the buttons are large and embossed on the Charge 3 so I can press them without even looking at the speaker. On Pulse 3 you have to look for the buttons to press them. Last gripe is the battery life. 12 hours for the Pulse 3 compared to 20 hours for the Charge 3. I used the speaker off and on for the majority of the day and had to plug it in toward the end of the day for continued use. I felt that it only lasted about 8 - 9 hours. My Charge 3 can be used for off and on for about 2 – 3 days without having to worry about recharging. This, I believe, is where it would be beneficial to turn off the lightshow display to improve battery life. Recommendation; if you are looking for a great sounding speak that looks amazing, you like to entertain guests, you are using it while watching videos, and have a safe secure place to display it as a conversational piece this is your speaker. If you want a speaker that is a little more rugged that you intend of taking outside on a regular bases such as to the pool or camping I would recommend the Charge 3.... Show more

Lightshow with great sound
3 January 2019
I bought this for my daughter for Christmas and she is very pleased with it. Great sound with lightshow and slick appearance. It seems to be slightly larger then the pulse 1 and 2 and the light doesn't cover the entire outer like the previous models., due to the extra speaker. This also means it doesn't lie on its side like previous versions. The sound quality is very good for a relatively small speaker and the light patterns can be configured from a phone or tab using the JBL app. The extra speaker and microphone allow voice activation via Google or Siri on your phone. This seemed to work intermittently and seemed to depend on what else the phone was doing, but in principle OK. Mesmerizing Sound Orb
1 September 2017
I'll admit when I first saw the Pulse 3 I thought the light show seemed a bit gimmicky. I assumed it was just an attempt to stand out from the other couple hundred portable bluetooth speakers. But after using this thing for a couple weeks, I find myself mesmerized by the light show. In addition to music, I listen to a lot of podcasts and I love setting the Pulse to the equalizer light setting and watching it as I listen. It feels like it's talking to me, as weird as that sounds.I sort of consider myself a music snob and was half expecting the Pulse 3 to have some shortfalls in sound quality because its main selling point is durability/water resistance and the light show. I was quickly proved wrong, the sound is very full and carries extremely well. I have yet to hear a high crash (my pet peeve) even when blasting it at full volume. I've played everything from metal to oldschool rap (excluding country, sorry) and have been thoroughly impressed by the quality.I'd say the only letdown is the app that controls the lightshow. It's kind of annoying to use, you have to select which product you have each time and it doesn't seem as seamless as everything else. Not a big deal in usual use, it pairs to your phone like a normal bluetooth speaker, you just need the special app to control the lights (which default to your last setting when turned on).And most importantly, as with all JBL products I own, the battery life is AMAZING!! It lasts forever and doesn't do that annoying ding that some speakers do when the battery is getting low. Also, if you're stingy with your battery life the light show can be turned off right from the speaker.... Show more

Oh so fun!!

My boyfriend got the iHome iBT84 Bluetooth speaker which inspired me to look into options for myself. I watched several video reviews on YT and was blown away by the Pulse 3! I set it up as soon as I got home, which was very easy to do, and I was blown away by the sound on this thing. Believe it or not, the quality of music coming from this speaker is actually richer than from my $1000+ 4K Samsung TV. Truly. I was listening to Spotify from the Pulse 3 in my bedroom and when I went out to the living room I decided to switch it to the TV. My reaction was “oh ew...” and I immediately switched it back to the Pulse. I was listening to Spotify from the Pulse 3 in my bedroom and when I went out to the living room I decided to switch it to the TV. My reaction was “oh ew...” and I immediately switched it back to the Pulse. Even though it was coming from *another room!*The app is a lot of fun to play with in switching between light shows, adjusting the brightness, etc. The volume buttons on my iPhone control the speaker volume, and the adjustment is visually indicated by rising/falling lights on the speaker, then once you’re done adjusting, it goes back to the light show. My only gripe is that there is no way to turn the device on/off from the app, nor is there a way to turn the lights off from the app. You can only switch between different light shows. So for example if you are listening late at night and still want to hear the music, but want the lights off, you have to get up and manually hold the Lights button in for like 2 seconds. The lights turn off and the music continues. Kind of weird that you can use the app to switch between ALL of the lighting options except “off” ... but that is more of a complaint about the app than the device itself, I suppose. Also a word of caution... I had the iPhone 6s when I first bought this and wasn’t overly impressed with the sync between music and rhythm of the JBL lights. It looked more like random light movement than crisp reactions to the music. My phone had been freezing and lagging in general so I ended up upgrading to an iPhone 8 like a week later. The JBL speaker performs *significantly* better now. The lights are much more rapid and crisp movements, perfectly on beat, rather than laggy and seemingly random. So make sure you have a device that can actually do this thing justice or you’ll be missing out on what it can really do.... Show more

The Sound Quality and Light Show We All Wanted

I purchased this speaker to play at parties, with friends, or at work once my store closes. The store is very large but the speaker reaches all areas of the store, even though the sound at the farthest corners are faint. It isn’t a Wal-Mart sized store but something slightly smaller. The light show is excellent. The lights seem to dance to the music, although I have confirmed they just follow what seems to be pre-defined patterns. The bass is booming. The mids are smooth and clean while the highs really fill the space around the speaker. You can feel your music in your bones. The speaker is durable. Very nice improvements over Pulse 2
30 December 2017
I bought this to replace my Pulse 2, hoping for improved battery life, better lighting effects, and amazing sound quality. Out of those three categories, the battery life is only slightly better than the previous generation, but not quite living up to my expectations of 10-13 hours of playback at moderate listening level (with and without light effects). It couldn't make it through a 10-hour shift of mine.Despite this one shortcoming, JBL has delivered in spades across the board--improvements in all areas, technically. I never worried about this with Pulse 2 because it felt more durable from accidental drops and whatnot.Pulse 3 is bigger and better in every aspect, but be wary of handling it near rough surfaces and don't expect it to last as long as stated; it's incrementally better than its predecessor by at least 25%.If you are looking for a fantastic Bluetooth speaker, now is the time to grab one while it's still on sale. For all Pulse 2 owners on the fence, don’t hesitate to upgrade to this newer version. You can’t go wrong!... Show more
