A Solid Wireless Headset Just Not for Every Device

So, heading into this review I want to address the elephant in the room first, since there are a lot of things I really like about this headset, but there is one thing that is likely going to be a deal-breaker for a lot of people. The claims that this headset is wireless and compatible with PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Mobile Devices, is true, but misleading. This is because while it is wireless, it can only be used wirelessly with devices that support audio through USB or Bluetooth. The headset uses a USB dongle for most gaming sources, which means that it will work fine on PC, with the full suite of JBL audio software available to use as a result. This is because while it is wireless, it can only be used wirelessly with devices that support audio through USB or Bluetooth. The headset uses a USB dongle for most gaming sources, which means that it will work fine on PC, with the full suite of JBL audio software available to use as a result. On the PS4, you can get wireless audio, but you don’t get many of the bonuses from the PC software. On Xbox and Nintendo Switch on the other hand, you need to use the included 3.5mm cable to wire it to the console/controller. So, while the product description seems to imply that the full feature set is available across all devices, this isn’t truly the case, with the full experience of the headphones really only being possible for PC gaming. Now that this is out of the way, I want to talk about the actual experience of using the headphones, which largely is excellent. The preset sound signature is very balanced, with a nice bass response that doesn’t sound artificially enhanced, clear midrange, and even at high volumes, never sounded harsh. I play a lot of Call of Duty, so positional accuracy is nearly essential for me as a gamer. Thankfully, while the soundstage never feels incredibly wide, it has a nice space to it that allows for clear imaging of where enemies are running. Using Dolby Atmos for Headphones on my Xbox, with these plugged in over the controller, I was easily able to discern enemy positions in a full 360-degree space. This is not the case for all headsets I have used. Additionally, in terms of gaming, the flip-up to mute mic is a very welcome feature I never knew I needed, and the mic clarity itself is very good. The foam ear pads are very comfortable, although I personally found them a bit warm for longer playing sessions, and the headband felt a bit tight for my tastes, but not overbearing by any means. In terms of PC gaming, the headset is really able to shine, with a software suite that allows you to adjust your surround sound settings, dial in your head measurements for more accuracy, and adjust things like RGB, which in my opinion looked quite good, although I have never personally understood the point of RGB on headphones. I played a bit of Alien Isolation on my PC with these connected wirelessly in the Quantum Surround mode (which sounded best in my opinion), and I nearly jumped out of my seat when the Alien jumped out at me. These really are that good. The headphones aren’t too heavy but feel very sturdy overall. I like that you can control some of the mic monitoring directly on the headphones, along with volume, Bluetooth connectivity, power, and mic muting. The active noise cancelling is also surprisingly great in my opinion. I only say surprisingly because I have used dedicated noise cancelling headphones which sounded worst than these, I was actually very impressed with the noise cancelling when gaming and listening to music.Overall, I really like this headset. It can be used both wired and wirelessly, with two ways of connecting wirelessly (Bluetooth and USB Dongle). It sounds really good, has great imaging, good mic quality, effective noise cancelling, and feels high quality. Unfortunately, the detailing for the product does feel misleading, with only the full array of gaming features being available on PC, and wireless connectivity not being fully possible on Xbox and Nintendo Switch. If you’re in need of a primarily Xbox or Switch headset, I personally feel this headset is a bit too expensive to not be using the majority of features it is capable of. However, if you want a great all-around headset, that has an array of connectivity options, and excellent overall quality, this is a great way to go.

All the cables were braided and sturdy, with a quality feel to them, as was the quality of the entire headset in general. I’ve always really enjoyed JBL products, and this was no exception. My work laptop is a Windows 10 Lenovo ThinkPad E480 and unfortunately, the set up wasn’t as straight forward and clear as I would have liked. However, once I had the headset and microphone completely set up and configured the way I wanted, using the downloadable JBL Quantum Engine software, they sounded fantastic. I was especially impressed with the 7.1 surround sound. When listening to a video, movie, or game that has been recorded in that format, you can definitely tell where the sound/voice/explosion/etc is coming from. Video and voice conference calls were clear and the headset was very comfortable to wear for long periods of time with thick memory foam on the ear-cups, and on the headband. I primarily used them wirelessly, with the included 2.4GHz USB dongle, and after using them for a very short while, the controls on the left ear cup were easy to find and adjust. The Active Noise Cancelling is a great feature to have and it worked well, as did the Talk-Thru functionality…for talking to others nearby without having to remove the headset. In my opinion, the LED lighting on the headset is probably a little overkill. Because, unless you’re sitting next to others, or on a video call where other people can see you, nobody is going to even notice the nice color changing LED lights on the headset…not even the person who’s wearing them, unless he looks in a mirror. So, I went ahead and toggled that setting off, to help save a little battery life.

Emailed the company and was told to just 'wiggle the volume control a bit when it happens' (that doesn't work and also who talks about their products like that??). This crackling was something that came up in the other reviews I read at the time.Another issue is that these headphones continually lose connection so you get to listen to them dropping in and out as you play. The only positive to that is that sometimes the crackle stops if they reconnect and you don't have to do it manually, or restart your computer.Don't do what I did and ignore the reviews. You can buy something much better for the same price.

Good sound quality and better looking in person
7 June 2020

These headphones offer good sound quality and are pretty comfortable for closed back headphones. The have good sound isolation passively and the ANC surprised me with how good it was, they completely block out a running RV A/C while sitting directly below it. And unlike a few other ANC headphones I did not experience any discomfort or added 'pressure' when using ANC.Sound quality is good and positioning is great, as long as you aren't using the Quantum Surround. In stereo and DTS these are great for gaming and movies but the quantum option wasn't for me. It does give the sound a more open feeling but it is not as clean and for some reason everything shifted positioning wise. Sound that should be in front of you was coming from overhead and it all sounded 'tilted'. This is really not a big deal for me as I usually prefer to use headphones in stereo and let the game engine handle the audio positioning and for movies the DTS setting works just fine and doesn't really color the audio much but gives good surround and little more low end punch. The controls are easy to find and operate by feel and the red light facing you on the boom mic when it is muted is a nice touch. The software for controlling the audio options and RGB is simple and easy to use.Wireless via the dongle and bluetooth both function flawlessly. I had no issues with pairing and I did not experience any video sync issues due to audio lag. My only complaint about connectivity is that I am a little disappointed that it does not function completely wirelessly with an XBox. You'll need to plug 3.5mm into the controller.I was worried these would be too shiny and gaudy with the chrome ear cup buts it is a much more subdued dark chrome in person and it's not as bulky as I thought either. The RGB has a nice glow with different and customizable settings available and can be turned off if that's more your style.

Intended usage was for calls (phone and video) plus music listening on-the-go. The Quantum 800 delivers all of that, albeit with a side of seemingly inexplicable quirks and problems. In some scenarios, it’s flawed but good. In others, it’s unusable.Audio quality is good. Very detailed, fairly neutral, very clear for the price. The onboard amp gets as loud as you like. In wired mode, the drivers are not difficult to power.Voice quality through the mic is also very good for the price. Crisp, clean, natural. The headset feels like it’s built like a tank. In over a year of almost daily use, I have seen nothing to suggest any part is going to break any time soon.Bluetooth connectivity is easy and works every time. The 2.4 GHz connection works as seamlessly as you’d hope. The ANC is a mixed experience. It works, but with caveats. When it’s on, you feel a weird pressure in your ears, and any significant movement of the headset on your head causes weird click/pop noises. All this for good-but-not-great noise reduction.Abandon all hope of using this headset for calls in Bluetooth mode unless there is ZERO background noise and you stay perfectly still the whole time. I’ve had multiple people tell me the background noise from my end was intolerable. Apparently it’s fine while I’m talking but increases in volume when I stop, almost like there’s some automatic gain control that ends up amplifying every little sound from my environment while I’m not talking. The background noise is much less of an issue when using the headset in wireless mode, but that’s the opposite of what you’d expect from a headset with ANC. It should be using the external mics to reduce background noise. In other words, voice quality should be better when the onboard electronics are in charge. The reality is the opposite: the onboard electronics make the problem worse.I contacted JBL’s customer support about this issue. To their credit, they were very responsive and did a warranty exchange for me. The replacement was obviously refurbed and had a weird rattle in one earcup, so they issued another exchange immediately and sent me a brand new headset. Solid customer service. Sadly, no change in the Bluetooth call background noise issue. The headset is very, very heavy. Think 50% heavier or more vs. other wireless headsets in this range. Extended wearability is surprisingly good given the weight, but still not great. The weird pressure effect from the ANC makes long listening sessions worse.Tonality is very different with and without ANC. Without ANC, the sound strongly emphasizes the midrange – more so than I’d like, especially in Bluetooth mode which has the worst sound quality. Fortunately this can be fixed via the EQ function in the software. A mild U-shaped curve makes everything alright. But when you turn on ANC, it applies its own fairly radical U-shaped EQ curve on top of whatever you’ve set. Nowhere is the obvious option to have different user EQ settings for ANC on vs. ANC off. You can set it to sound right with ANC on, or you can set it to sound right with ANC off. Not both.As a matter of personal preference, I didn’t want the inline controls that the stock cable has. They feel cheap, I never use them, and I didn’t want anything fiddly on the cable. When I looked for replacement cables with 4-pole 3.5mm connectors (to retain the boom mic's functionality), all the options I saw were cheap junk, so I had a custom cable made by Redco Audio. Surprisingly, the Redco cable had noticeably better treble than the stock cable. Nice side benefit. Of course that also means the stock cable is limiting audio quality somewhat.Overall, I’m not mad that I purchased this headset, but I struggle to understand what it’s really for. It has clear merits, but it also has significant liabilities that hinder it in almost any use case.

Good, sound and quality. But it have some flaws.
17 October 2021

The headset is robust and well made. Materials are of good quality and construction. Sound quality is very good, although the mic is ok (not good, but not bad.. just OK). It has a bit of bass boost by default (it is not very flat, but not a big problem). It has a major fail: it does not work while charging. For a wireless headset, this is really a point to be fixed. When you plug the charger cable (included), the headset shuts down itself.Particularly, I didn't like JBL QuantumSurround for overall use, but I am aware this is a personal taste.Work well with Bluetooth and 3.5mm cable, although you lost some features doing so. Great Sound but just missed the top marks
25 August 2020

Was really excited to get my hands on this gaming headset, the features looked great and JBL are known for great sound quality and for the most part I am not disappointed.PROS:Sound quality is awesomeCombining the 7.1 with noise cancelling means that nothing can sneak up on you even with the washing machine going and the kids screaming in the background. The ability to easily adjust the chat to game sound ratio with the dial controls on the headset mean I can drown out the chatter and focus on that crucial point in the game or vice versa.Versatility/BatteryI am using the headset to run conference meetings in the day and game in the night and the battery is still going when I decide its bed time but only once I turned off the flashing LED’s on the sides. ... MoreWas really excited to get my hands on this gaming headset, the features looked great and JBL are known for great sound quality and for the most part I am not disappointed.PROS:Sound quality is awesomeCombining the 7.1 with noise cancelling means that nothing can sneak up on you even with the washing machine going and the kids screaming in the background. Colleagues and friends have commented on how clear my voice is in comparison to my old Plantronics RIG 800 gaming headset or my Sony WH1000XM3’s.Ease of setup/useSimply plugging in the wireless dongle asks you to install the software, updating the headset was a bit of a pain though. I didn’t struggle with using Bluetooth on my laptop either although without the software installed the features are limited but the sound is still awesome. Ove being able list the mic arm and it muting, the light showing you that its safe to let off steam The range is really good, I am able to wander the house making a tea, grabbing the washing whilst still chatting away.CONS:Chargingif I forget to charge the headset overnight then inevitably the headset starts warning me that the battery is almost gone, not so great when halfway through a presentation and you ask the audience to bear with you while you change headsets or try find the 3.5mm cable. It would have been great if you could charge and use at the same time as you can with a lot of gaming headsets. Unfortunately, this is the main reason for only giving 4 stars.WeightOne the one hand the weight of the headset is reassuring as they are very robust. However, as I so frequently get animated when I lose or when my in-game character is assassinated I found that throwing my head back means the headset ends up on the floor. Don’t get me wrong so far they have survived a hammering but it scares my team mates when they hear the loud bang.Hot EarsThe ear cups are really comfortable but after wearing them most of the day my ears get a little sweaty, something I didn’t really get with my older headset but noise cancelling isn’t as good as the JBL’s so I can live with the compromise.

If only the battery lasted longer
23 June 2023

The audio is crisp and while playing warzone 2.0 or rainbow six siege its my favorite of all time i use them daily and they work like a charm, the only downfall is the bsttery. The battery doesn’t last long as 14 hours. I stream and go online around 4 or 5pm and around 10 or 11pm my headset is already notifying me that its gonna die, yet the battery last for about 8 hours total wireless with dongle on playstation 4 and with the RGB Lighting on. If only the battery really last 14 hours. I would of given it a 5 star out of 5.That’s why i decided to give 4. But yes even the people that hear my voice say its very very clear. No lag etc.

Outstanding Sound and Performance
5 June 2020

These headphones are a great move forward in bringing outstanding sound and noise cancellation technology to gaming headsets.System compatibility: PC / XBOX / Playstation / Nintento Switch / Mobile / Mac / VR. I tested mostly on a PC.The headphones are comfortable to wear and the soft foam earpieces exclude a LOT of external noise. In use, there is also, I believe, some degree of active noise cancellation (ANC) that can be toggled simply from the headset to allow easy access to external sounds (like someone talking to you). The sound is immediately surprising. Strong bass that isn't muddy at all, very clear highs, crisp sounds that are never distorted, and astounding separation of L/R channels.Sound that is unaugmented by their software is impressive - direct ... MoreThese headphones are a great move forward in bringing outstanding sound and noise cancellation technology to gaming headsets.System compatibility: PC / XBOX / Playstation / Nintento Switch / Mobile / Mac / VR. Strong bass that isn't muddy at all, very clear highs, crisp sounds that are never distorted, and astounding separation of L/R channels.Sound that is unaugmented by their software is impressive - direct connection through the included 3.5 mm audio cable is outstanding and approaches the sound of more expensive headphones designed for audio-only enjoyment - Bluetooth and 2.4G wireless sound is responsive and very impressive (nothing will ever be as impressive as a direct connection).Navigation of the headset is a little daunting at first - the illustration in the quick start guide has 16 items identified on the headset. But most of the physical controls are not things that need to be adjusted frequently during use and I found the use of the headset to feel like an extension of my hand almost immediately.PC software is a little bloat-y but is easy to use and is helpful in making simple adjustments to sound design. Un-adjusted sound for me was a little exaggerated at the north and south ends of the spectrum. The quality of the sound here is the selling point: crisp, clean, clear. With a direct connection, there is also the uncharacteristic availability of impressive volume (headphones are notoriously designed to under-volume (?) everything to over-protect you from hearing loss). Here, the direct connection sounds grand and the two wireless options are wholly impressive. The microphone is fine, but is not the selling point of this headset.

Solid Sound with Lots of Connectivity Options
22 July 2020

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Top Features:1) Connectivity Options - Bluetooth, and dongles, and aux jacks oh my! By far the coolest thing about these headphones is the range of connectivity options and how easy it is to set up them up and switch between them. I was even able to connect the USB 2.4GHz to my television to binge Netflix at night without disturbing the roommates.2) Comfort - The 800s are super comfortable thanks to some of the softest foam I've ever felt lining the earcups and headband. Despite being relatively heavy for headphones, I've been able to wear these for long stretches without any discomfort.3) Sound Details - Sound quality in general is great as always with JBL, but I've been particularly impressed with how clear ... More[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Top Features:1) Connectivity Options - Bluetooth, and dongles, and aux jacks oh my! I feel like video games are often packed with smaller sound details that are easy to miss, but the Quantum 800s really make those details stand out.Biggest Bummers:1) PC Only for Customizations - My personal computer is a Mac so I don't have any way of accessing the customization features from QuantumEngine. This is a huge bummer as there are definitely times when I really wish I could turn off the lights. Would have been nice if at least some features could be accessed/updated via an app on my phone.2) Weight / Bulk - relative to other wireless over-ear headphones that I've owned in the past, the Quantum 800s are definitely on the heavier side. They're also pretty bulky and don't really fold or collapse in any way that would make them a good choice for portable headphones. Like I mentioned before, they're super comfortable so the weight isn't really a negative in that regard, just something to keep in mind if you plan on hauling these around with you.Overall very happy with these headphones and would definitely recommend to any PC owners looking for solid sound quality with lots of connectivity options.
