Long hair, glasses, and even earrings may affect getting that proper fit. Now, the JLab app isn't necessary to use these earbuds, but if you want to, the settings are pretty basic - Battery Level indicator, Equalizer, Touch Controls reference list, Music Mode/Movie Mode, Safe Hearing level slider. Under the 'My JLab' tab, there is even a choice of 9 Ambient Sounds you can listen to if you just want to relax or have some background audio playing as you go about your day.Touch controls were easy enough to remember and master. They are pretty standard as per other earbuds I've used. Call quality was just adequate. And sound quality was also what I'd expect from this type of audio device.Battery life is pretty good. While a full battery didn't last me a whole day, these Flex earbuds charge relatively quickly. The charging case is compact, which is nice if you want to bring the earbuds with you and tuck them into a purse, pocket, or backpack. The price of these JLab Flex Open Earbuds is more than fair. They are inexpensive, yet of good quality.

Clip on ear, pair and go.Pairing was easy enough as they connected to my Iphone and worked immediately. They slide quickly over your ear with the smaller part on the inside and the larger part on the outside and they are very light weight. The one problem I encountered initially was placement. Depending on how and where you place them on your ear, it can greatly compromise the sound quality. After much testing, I found that keeping them lower than higher produced the best sound quality. As for the sound quality itself, it is good. Not great, but good. Bass is minimal but acceptable. Treble is ok. I wouldn't use these for high level quality music but they work well enough for basic music, podcasts and more.I tend to listen to podcasts when working out so these fit right in.Build quality is solid and they come in the standard "earbud" charging case design that is USB-C. There is a cable included but it is super short. Luckily, these can be charged from just about any USB-C charger so I plugged them into my USB charging hub and that worked just fine.I did find that after awhile, the grabbing/pinching of the Jlabs was noticeable and started to irritate my ears a little. Not a game breaking level, but definitely there and something you may want to keep an eye on.Overall, I will use them for short workouts for which these will work perfectly, but for long term wearing, I feel like the clasping on my ear may become an issue.

Some people (including me) really don’t like traditional earbuds much. First of all, they generally don’t stay in. And when they do stay in, they make my ear canals itchy and uncomfortable after a while. So what do you do in this case? Previously, your best option was to get a set of bone-conduction headphones. These work well, but they are a bit expensive, and don’t easily fit in your pocket when you are not using them. But another option is the “clip-on earbuds” such as this one!OK, these don’t go IN your ears, but instead clip around the pinna (the part of your ear that sticks out), and because of this, they won’t cause discomfort in your ear canals. But another option is the “clip-on earbuds” such as this one!OK, these don’t go IN your ears, but instead clip around the pinna (the part of your ear that sticks out), and because of this, they won’t cause discomfort in your ear canals. But this design itself does have some compromises. Since it doesn’t seal, it cannot block noise, so noise canceling is not even an option. Whether this is good or bad depends upon the situation. If you are on a busy street, being able to hear traffic and horns could keep you safe. In an office environment, this will allow you to hear if a coworker tries to speak to you. On the other hand, these would be useless in an aircraft or any noisy environment. But the big disadvantage when compared to bone conduction options is that others nearby might be able to hear what you are listening to, and in a silent space, such as a library, the sound might be loud enough to disturb others. But given those technical limitations, how does this particular model do? First, I must admit that this is my first pair of clip-on earbuds, so I don’t have a reference frame for how other companies perform, but I must admit that I very much like these. I find the sound quality to be more than acceptable, and for those with more discerning tastes, the JLab app opens up the 10-band equalizer which will allow the sound to be sculpted to match your preferences. The semi-circular arm between the lobes of each bud is rounded and made from a relatively soft rubber, which increases comfort. My only complaint is that I wish that the arm were just a bit longer to accommodate my large ears, but for people with average to smaller sized ears, this should not be a problem. When I first got them, I was not sure how to tell the left side from the right side. However, they will only go into the case one way, so that makes it easy. If you try to put the left bud in the right side, the magnets repel, cluing you into the fact that you have it backwards. Later on, I noticed the large “L” and “R” stamped into the plastic that faces the outside of your ear, so that mystery was solved. One noticeable lack is that the case does not have wireless charging, as it only uses USB-C. But since Bose Ultra Open Earbuds cost many times more and it doesn’t even have wireless charging, I think that we can give the JLab model a pass for this. So, to summarize, these are comfortable for most people, sound great, and are affordable.
I have always been a big fan of the Jlab earbuds. I think they make some of the best sounding earbuds that punch way above what they cost. These ones are a little bit different though, instead of going in your ear, they clip to the outside.Out of the box, its pretty much what you get with most of the Jalb earbuds. You get a small case with a battery that will also charge the buds when you aren’t wearing them giving you lots of play time on a single charge. You also get a charging cable and that’s about it. No need for any extra ear tips or anything since these don’t actually go in your ear canal.I have to say at first, I didn’t love the fit of these. No need for any extra ear tips or anything since these don’t actually go in your ear canal.I have to say at first, I didn’t love the fit of these. They definitely take a little trial and error for you to figure out the most comfortable position for your ears. I found the best way to start is to kind of pull the side of your ear out with one hand and then slide the earbud over it pretty much parallel to where your ear canal is. From there you can kind of slide it up and down a little bit till you find the most comfortable position. At first they did feel a little tight, but after wearing them for about a half hour I barely noticed they were there anymore. I wore them for a full 8 hours and didn’t have any discomfort at all.As far as sound quality goes, they are definitely not going to give you the same sound quality as a normal earbud because of the open design. You don’t get a seal in your ear canal so the air that the drivers are pushing doesn’t stay all in your ear. You get the benefit of being able to easily hear your surroundings, but you definitely lose a little sound quality. I found that if you love to listen to podcasts or audio books these things are amazing for that. As far as music goes, they are definitely listenable, but just know they wont sound as good as your typical earbud. You won’t get the punchy bass and crisp highs. It will just kind of sound like a radio in a room with all the ambient noise. While I probably won’t be using these as my daily earbuds, they definitely have their niche and their purpose that they are best suited for.You can also use these for taking calls as well. I found them pretty easy to hear in quieter environments, but if you are in a loud space, it might be harder to hear who you are talking to. The microphone worked pretty well. People I were talking to said that they were able to hear me clearly, again, in a fairly quiet environment.Overall, for what these are, they are a very solid and comfortable earbud. I would definitely give them a try if you listen to a lot of spoken word, or need to hear the environment around you, or find it hard to wear traditional earbuds hue to comfort or irritation. These might be the solution you have been looking for!

Let's see how well they perform!Initial Setup=================================JLab's products typically have neat, tidy, and minimal packaging and this is no different. You'll get a case, a quick start guide, and a tiny USB-C cable hidden in the cardboard packing. Once you open up the small case, you'll see the "handles" of the two buds and a small plastic strip you'll need to remove to allow the buds to charge. With Google Fast Pair, these JLab Flex were instantly recognized and I was offered to pair them either on my Google Pixel 8 Pro or Pixel 6a. It couldn't have been easier. After that, I did download the JLab app to ensure I could check out the additional customization, update firmware (no updates yet), etc. We'll dig into that later.Fit-wise, these were interesting and new to me compared to traditional IEM/headphones I use. They look like a bent barbell or perhaps a two-headed kettlebell with the larger side facing to the rear (with the logo and touch surface) and the smaller area hooking onto your ear. If you look closely, you'll see a fine mesh where the speaker's audio is emitted. The more you angle that towards your actual ear's opening, the better and louder the audio will sound (at the expense of drowning out environmental sounds).I tried these and so did other members of my family and I was surprised to see they fit everyone pretty well. Not only that, they stayed in place for light jogging, elliptical, and weights. I think these would be great to use outside if you were walking, but I hesitate to say they'd stay in your ears 100% while running and bouncing. I'd hate to have one of these drop off and get damaged! They have a large 12mm speaker in each unit, long battery life (thanks to the large housing), BT 5.4, IPX4 splash protection, and BT multipoint which is very welcome in something so affordable.Performance=================================I had my expectations set pretty low since the main purpose of these open ear styles is focused on environmental awareness, not audio quality. Well, these 12mm drivers sound pretty darn good! I will caveat this by saying it really depends on how you can angle the speakers toward your ear openings. You can immediately tell the difference as you start to shift the buds from pointing the sound upwards to directly into your ears. As you move them even closer to your ear openings, you'll start to get more full sound including some actual bass, but now you'll be blocking out the world around you.So backing off a bit, I think I was able to find a pretty happy medium where I could hear the music decently (much better than having no music at all!), while still being available to hear things like when my kids needed help with school, etc. Using BT multipoint it was also easy to switch this to my computer so I could hear my trainings and webinars privately and still participate, when needed, in other things that were going on in the house. The mic quality is another "better than expected" quality. With their strange placement, I didn't think they'd pick up voices well and I figured they'd pick up a lot of ambient noise, but they were actually quite decent. Not great, but good enough for calls and meetings, but I would suggest muting your mic whenever you're not speaking. I also did notice some sibilance when someone else was using the JLab Flex and they called me.The JLab app includes the usual suspects like EQ + custom EQ options, touch button customization, and a firmware updater. It also included some additional "nice to haves" like a volume limiter with a 95db and 85db limiter (great for kids!) and an ambient sound generator that allows you to mix/match and layer ambient sounds like waves, rain, birds, and more. These could be some great sleep buds if you're not a side-sleeper!The battery life is rated at 8 hours for the buds themselves and 24 if you include the fact you can charge them 2x in the case. That's plenty of time for my use cases which involve a few meetings a day and some listening before bed.One thing I don't love - and that's not specific to these JLab Flex - is their implementation of the touch controls. There's just enough of a delay when tapping to make you think, "did it go through? Should I tap again?" and it can mess up what you're trying to do. The simple single tap for volume up/down is pretty reliable, but bets are off when going for the double or triple. I was glad that I could adjust those in the app to either "off" or something non-intrusive. I did move Google Assistant to long-press, though. Conclusion=================================If you find yourself needing or wanting to listen to some things without blocking out the world (and people) around you, these are a great choice. Sure you may be giving up some fidelity and sound quality, but these JLab Flex sound pretty good considering the speaker is quite a bit further from your ear than IEMs or earbuds that directly block your ear canal. They fit comfortably and securely for walking around the house and doing some lighter workouts. Sound quality on calls and meetings is decent as well. I wouldn't take a job interview on them, but I'd certainly take casual calls with family and friends. If you don't like the feeling or bass-less sound of bone-conduction headphones, definitely give these a try!
I’m a big fan of earbuds/headphones that leave the ears open to allow you to be aware of your surroundings. I enjoy bone conduction headphones, but they do leave a lot to be desired in the sound quality category. Newer “air conduction” earbuds are attempting to resolve this issue, and there are currently two approaches to this: ear hooks and ear clips. Bose is the first to come out with ear clips, but they are pretty expensive, so I decided to try the new JLab Flex Open earbuds. The ear clip design is sort of like a large earring around the outer part of the ear. This places the battery/button slightly behind the ear, with the speaker module inside the ear, but not blocking the ear canal.Comfort:It takes a little getting used to putting an earbud on your ear in this position, but it’s pretty easy. Angling the loop up or down can make it more comfortable, as well as improving the sound. I was concerned that these would not be comfortable, but they were quite comfortable, and a little fiddling allowed me to quickly find the optimal spot. The key here is whether these will work with your ears, since the length from the back of the loop to the speaker and battery is fixed, so I think these will either work for you or they won’t. These are very comfortable, but they did start making my ears sore after about an hour. I’m still in the phase of getting used to these, so I expect that to improve the more I use them.Aside from the minor discomfort I just mentioned, the Flex Open earbuds are very lightweight and comfortable, making it easy to forget you’re wearing them. The clip approach is surprisingly secure, allowing them to stay put no matter how you move. In spite of that, I’m not sure you’ll want to use these for sports involving a lot of sweating or rain. They’re only rated IPX4, which JLab calls “everyday proof”. Since these essentially use a tiny speaker, that’s an open hole where water can enter, so I won’t be using these while I run.One big advantage to the clip design is that it doesn’t interfere with glasses at all. This is a big advantage that is shared by in-ear buds as well, but most open buds/headphones using either a headband or ear clips interfere with glasses. Not having to deal with that is nice.Sound quality:All of the “open” style earbuds/headphones sacrifice sound quality for situational awareness, and that’s why we buy them. That said, the newer “air conduction” style brings a huge improvement to the sound quality over bone conduction models. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the Flex, but I was very pleasantly surprised at how good they sound. They don’t seal inside the ear canal (they’re not supposed to), so you’re not going to get pounding bass like the best in-ear monitors, but these do a remarkable job, especially at 80% less than the Bose model. I haven’t tried that one, so I’m not able to comment on what may be different, but I can forgive a lot when saving that much money.Open earbuds create a wider soundstage, which is quite pleasant. The midrange and high notes are crisp and clear, the bass is good, in spite of not being as prominent as in-ear monitors. JLab provides 3 EQ settings: signature (enhanced bass & treble), balanced (flat) and custom (you set using the equalizer in the app). I’m always partial to custom settings, and while you won’t be wowed at your customization options, being able to tweak the sound a little does sound pretty good. Remember that openness is the real goal with this type of earbud, so the idea is to have a reasonably good sound while still being able to hear your surroundings. JLab has delivered an earbud that sounds better than you would expect at this price point. The Flex clips are not as loud as I had hoped. I first noticed this when using them while riding my electric scooter in the neighborhood. The wind blowing into my ears easily overpowered the Flex, requiring me to turn my head to hear. This would happen while riding a bike as well. Comparing these to my Shokz Open Fit, I found that the Shockz are considerably louder, but they cost a whole lot more as well, so take that into account. Given that the Flex are not targeted for use while exercising, the lower volume level isn’t a problem. They’re plenty loud enough for use indoors.Controls:I’ve had previous JLab earbuds, and while I prefer physical buttons, JLab’s previous implementation of physical buttons always seemed to be a little too hard to push for my liking. This resulted in me driving the earbud into my ear whenever I wanted to push a button. Touch-sensitive buttons solved this, but I think this version of the touch buttons is JLab’s best yet.JLab always provides the most functionality at its price point, and the Flex Open is no exception. Touch controls can be mapped to 4 different options for each ear, providing a lot of flexibility to set up the controls to your liking. Every other earbud manufacturer should do it like this!Call quality:Call quality is passable, but I wouldn’t say it’s great. It’s not bad either, it’s just that it’s obvious that you’re using something other than the phone itself. That doesn’t inhibit the ability to have a conversation, you just won’t be able to pretend you’re not using earbuds. Sound quality for calls in the earbuds is just as good as podcasts or audiobooks. At this price point, that’s not a showstopper at all. Conclusion:With prices moving ever higher for quality earbuds, JLab has delivered another winner in the value space. Full-featured and with great sound, the JLab Flex Open provide a solid open-ear alternative to more expensive alternatives. I’ve had some longevity issues with other JLab earbuds in the past, but if these can avoid that, it’ll make them a no-brainer purchase decision. If you want open earbuds for heavy exercise, I suggest you look at other alternatives, but for light exercise or all-day office usage, these fit the bill nicely.
In the box are the headphones, charging case, USB-C to USB-C charging cord, manual. (There is an app.)Right out of the box, these headphones in their case have a lightweight-sleek design. The cord it comes with is a usb-c to usb-c; which was great to see JLab using the newer charger, but it does not come with an adapter to plug into the wall. There’s a small protective tab to be removed, but they are ready to play right out of the box.Putting them on, I immediately noticed they do pinch your ears. It took a few hours of wear before I got used to the pressure on that part of my ear. Not to say it was entirely bad, as the tightness does keep it still. Wherever you rest the headphones, they will not move. They are also bigger than I initially thought they were, which has its own pros and cons. Great for keeping it one size for all users, and being able to adjust how they rest in your ear; however a nuisance for long haired users as the Cuffs are a magnet for any hair near the ear.Thankfully, hair doesn’t seem to activate the touch controls on the Cuffs, only skin. And even more thankfully you can turn the touch controls off (With the downloaded app), as the way the cuff rests naturally against your neck at some times it will activate the button, doing various things like skip songs and activating voice assistant. This seems to be worse when you’re active and sweating, but it could have been the way I was wearing them. The battery life was a bit lacking, as the headphones only last about five hours and charge twice in the case. It also doesn’t give you much of a warning before they die, I only heard it say battery low once before they turned themselves off. And when dead, they aren’t truly dead as they will turn themselves back on if you haven’t put them back in the case. (Learned the hard way when the touch turned them on and played music while I was asleep.)Despite this the headphones have an immensely crisp and clear sound, exceptional quality calls, and a very user-friendly start manual and app. The sound is one of the best quality I’ve heard out of headphones so far, they aren’t too loud mind you, but it doesn’t really bother me because of how nice they sound.Overall, there are a few quirks but nothing that are a deal breaker. I would recommend this product to friends and family. And I would probably purchase again because of the good sound quality.
I recently received the JLab Flex Open wireless earbuds, and I have to say, they’re unique. These earbuds have an open-ear design, which means they do not go inside your ear canal but rather sit just outside and grip the part called the Pinna. If you have ears that are above average in width, or your ear canal is situated more towards the front these may not be for you. Picture a rubber swimming nose clip, but it’s an earbud that grips your ear. This is great if you want to stay aware of your surroundings while listening to music or taking calls. The sound is decent, but do not expect booming bass or super crisp highs. They are good for podcasts, audiobooks, and casual music listening, but if you’re an audiophile, you might find them lacking. But they do have 2 preset equalizers set for “J Lab Signature” or “Balanced” sound plus the ability for a 3rd custom preset. Additionally, they have a preset Music or Movie mode. You can use both buds at once or either one as a standalone. The case is compact but lacks wireless charging. But it does have alternating polarity magnets so you cannot put the wrong earbud on the wrong side of the case! Plus they allow for multi-point connections which is a plus for buds at this price point. The phone app is intuitive and includes options to turn off the bud touch controls and limit the dB output from 85 to 100.They are quite comfortable for short periods, but the clip can feel a bit tight if you wear them for too long. It is a bit of a trade-off for the secure fit, especially if you are moving around a lot.The battery life is solid. I got around 7 hours on a single charge, and the case gives you a few extra charges, so you will not be left hanging during the day. They seem durable with an IP55 rating, which means they are resistant to dust and water. I have not had any issues with them during workouts or in light rain. They are affordable compared to other open-ear designs and you get a lot of value for the price.
BUILD QUALITY/DESIGNThe earbuds themselves are solidly built while the case feels a bit on the less premium side. The look of the buds is almost earring-like. None of the promotional pics from JLab are taken straight on facing the user–they’re all oblique shots in which you can’t really tell how conspicuous the loops are. Depending on your ears and head shape, the loops will be more or less obvious. I don’t mind the look, but people will definitely notice and do a double-take.I would have preferred better marking of the left and right sides of the earbuds so that they are identifiable at a glance. An “L” and “R” are molded into the inside of the “earring” back, but to see it you need to pry the two ends open. There’s a USB C port in the back of the case. This is a welcome change from JLab’s signature integrated USB A cable. Although I always appreciated that cable, USB C is becoming more and more ubiquitous, and being able to use a phone charger cable is more convenient than finding an unused USB A port.THE SOUND (the good)I was impressed with the sound. I wasn’t expecting much more than very open sound with not much in the lows, but these surprised me with acceptable lows and fuller sound given that they are open air buds. In fact, the audio is actually downright good. It’s important to make sure that the drivers are facing the ear canal, so it can take some fiddling to get the best sound.I was intending the Flex buds to replace my bone conducting earphones for use while doing chores around the house and listening to podcasts or YouTube and Netflix. Bone conducting sets are admittedly a major compromise, and the Flex is a big step up in sound while obviously allowing for similar ambient sound passthrough.THE FIT (the not so good)The clamping pressure of the clips created hotspots inside my ears. I want to stress that I’m pretty sure this is going to vary for each user’s anatomy, but I feel like JLab should have either designed the clip with less clamping pressure or greater space between the driver section and the outer clip. The hotspots are tolerable to me for about an hour, after which it gets to a level that is either irritating or impossible to ignore. I’ll be able to use it for the intended purpose, but not for as long as I had hoped.
