I own one for 4 years now, and it's ideal. For Dutch standards it easily serves four. The dimensions are so smart. Whole chicken: fits. Two sizeable sea breams: fits. It's just the larger rib racks that need to be portioned and smoked sideways. The frame puts it high enough to operate by slightly bending over, and since mine is placed on a roof terrace accessed via a hatch, it's also low enough to be operated from within the hatch (half open) on a rainy low&slow cook. Light enough to be hoisted up 5 stairs. Heats up in no time. The only feature caveat is the absence of a weather proof vent. But I fixed that with a improv add on from the local hardware store. Recommended it to a colleague who then fell in love with the Classic II instead :-)

The grills are like tanks and they do there job. For long cooks I did purchase the Ultra Q Guru and it’s never been a set it and forget grill that worked any better .

This is a fantastic little grill! I also have a Kamado Joe classic II that I purchased after getting this and being so happy with it. I love them both but with just three of us, this one gets the most use. If you want a high quality ceramic grill and the size is right, you can’t beat it. It is also a nice compliment to a larger one. I have both going at times to cook different foods at different temperatures. It heats up fast and doesn’t use a lot of charcoal. It is also very versatile. I highly recommend it!

Ive owned a large Big Green Egg for over 20 years. The quality is excellent and I love grilling/smoking on it. But cooking for me and my wife the large egg is sometimes overkill. Firing it up for a couple steaks or pork chops seems extreme. Id been looking at the Mini Max but couldnt justify the price. I started looking at the Joe Jr, its the same size as the Mini Max, at a more budget friendly price. It was delivered to my home packaged very well! I unpacked it and set it up on my deck. The quality is every bit as good at BGE it also includes standard the heat deflector, ash tool and grill gripper which are options on the BGE. I fired it up and did a reverse sear on a Tri Tip roast. It held 250° easily for the smoking period. I removed the roast, took out the deflector, opened the top and bottom vents fully. The temp quickly rose to over 600° for searing. The Tri tip turned out perfectly! Im very pleased with this grill/smoker and would recommend it to anyone!
I highly recommend this grill for anyone getting started with Kamado or in need of a semi-portable grill. I bought this to replace a gas grill that was way too big for my needs. I'm not going back to gas after this.Pros:1. The design of the rack and included ceramic heat deflection plate are very good, allowing for at least 4 cooking configurations: Direct cooking low, direct cooking high (remove rack and place grill directly on ceramic ring), indirect cooking with included deflection plate, "double-indirect" cooking for pizza (you need to buy a pizza stone for this).2. The included tools are very handy (the grill lifter and especially the ash removal tool).Cons:1. The exhaust air adjustment often closes or changes when I open the dome. This could be ... The included tools are very handy (the grill lifter and especially the ash removal tool).Cons:1. The exhaust air adjustment often closes or changes when I open the dome. This could be overcome with a better mechanical design.2. The overall design, while being portable, is very low to the ground. It would be nice if Kamado Joe offered a rolling cart option for this grill.3. It would be nice if there were some reference markings on the lower air setting, 3 or 4 etched lines would be nice, that way I can reproduce settings more easily.Recommendations:1. Buy the smallest Kamado grill you need. Smaller grills heat up faster. The Joe Jr. is certainly enough for 2 people.2. Buy a grill cover for this if it is going outside.3. Buy good heat resistant gloves if you are doing cooks that involve changing the grill configuration.4. Even though the grill is called "portable," it still weighs 77 pounds which is a 2 person lift for many people. I'd call this semi-portable as it barely fits behind the seat of my car and is a bit cumbersome to use for weekly activities.Overall I love this grill!
As a young man, I journeyed to South East Asia in the military and purchased my very first Kamado clay cooker. I learned early that this type of cooking was very different from anything I ever used before. My first turkey was “off the charts” delicious. Once back into the US, I went on a search looking for the best cooker and value. The Kamado Joe Classic was my first choice. After more research, I discovered Costco was holding “ a series of road shows of “Kamado Joes” at their stores throughout the USA. The closet Costco Store with one of these shows was in Charlotte, N.C. It was a 250 mile trip that included the Classic Joe reduced $200 along with a free KJ cover and fire-starters. I called before leaving to ensure I could reserve a Classic Joe. It was such a ... MoreAs a young man, I journeyed to South East Asia in the military and purchased my very first Kamado clay cooker. I called before leaving to ensure I could reserve a Classic Joe. It was such a pleasant experience that every time I light-up the Joe, I think about it. I have researched and fully utilize the outstanding videos provided on the Kamado Joe website. Most people do not realize that this is a completely different way to cook. There is an entire sub-culture of Kamado aficionados who actually create new enhancements to clay oven cooking. There is turkey, smoke turkey , and incredible Kamado-smoked turkey; there is a significant difference between the three. Smoked macaroni and cheese is heavenly and people that try it begin their search on where to buy a Kamado Joe. The Joe comes with everything needed to make a legendary unforgettable meal. I did purchase a remote wireless Thermometer that permits the ability to know the internal oven temperature within the clay oven and the internal temperature of the meat being smoked. I am able to watch a football game while monitoring if I need to adjust the temperature. Anyone who has ever cooked with a Kamado cooker knows that obtaining proper temperature range far surpasses metal gas cookers plus the clay internal oven maintain stable low and high temperatures required for different type of cooking. Kamado cooking possesses an amazing ability to cook almost everything better. I find the learning opportunities in Kamado cooking to be endless! It is truly amazing !
Well my kamado joe jr was delivered damaged, but contacted kamado joe customer support and they sent me the parts to get the grill running okay. I purchased this, because I got a classic joe 1 from Lowes. But something happened. After I got this grill running it is better than the classic joe. It's a beast, come up to temperature better and quick. And holds temperature steady for a long while. A perfect coplainment for the classic 1. I can't do ribs or a brisket, I can do pork butt, roast or simple burgers. Try chicken on it's, a fun grill to use and I am still learning on this. But I find it quick to get to temperature, and it can cook longer than I thought. I cooked a 8 lb roast beef, and I had fuel left to cook breakfast for four people. I love it and I am ... The grill arrived the next day in a crate. It was in perfect condition. As a female, I was able to handle the Joe Jr by myself and put it together easily. The grill is the best I've ever owned. If you want to burn lump charcoal, this grill is absolute perfection. The grill is air tight so you control temperature and air flow. I bought a cast iron grill to go with it as it comes with stainless steel. If you want to burn charcoal, go with a Kamado Joe.
Packaging is extra easy to unpack. Comes fully assembled. Delivery was flawless. Parts are high quality and it feels like a premium product. Cooking is relatively easy once you figure out how to asjust the top and bottom vents to regulate temperature. I bought a charcoal basket which makes dealing with the charcoal easier. You must use hardwood lump charcoal as with all Kamados. Food came out extra tasty, juicy and delicious. Takes many hours to fully cooldown due to the heat retention of the ceramic body. BB price matches ao got it for $300. A good investment, should serve me well for many years. Their lifetime warranty on ceramic parts is a plus.
Let’s just start with the obvious: it’s a Kamado Joe. And it’s small. KJ’s are known for their quality and this one is no different: thick ceramics, top quality stainless grates, all tools included - just add charcoal and it’s ready to go.This is the Jr, 13.5” of grilling goodness. I do think you could smoke a single shoulder if you wanted to go low and slow - or two steaks, a beer butt chicken…really this thing is sized for two people for a perfect mid-week meal. Or tailgating. Just keep in mind, it’s small and that’s intentional.I also have the 18” classic and 24” Big Joe. For me, this 13.5” fits that perfect little void of wanting something smaller that comes up to temp a whole lot faster for midweek cooks.
