I recently purchased this to upgrade from an older water filter. I tested it at home and made sure I understand how it worked. 9 miles in we needed to replenish our water at a stream crossing. It pumped 4 times and lost prime and could never get it to work again. I spent several hours trying to figure out what the issue was but couldn't figure it out. Thank God I lent my buddy my old water filter as me and my son would have had out trip ruined. San Juan mountains CO.

My purchase from Al's has nothing to do with the items review. Al's performed as expected AAA+++.This filter unit is a great idea from a design point of you, but requires either better tolerancing or better mold making, so it would not leak. I owned and still own 6 different Katadyn products going back decades and all function flawlessly from day one to date. Not this one. The upside is Katadyn has a customer service second to none. A big plus. After replacing some major parts did not resolve the issue, Katadyn just simply sent me a new filter. This one works absolutely perfect and very happy to have yet another Katadyn product, that will serve me for many years. Now this is what I call integrity. Old company old values.

I love this water filter and the fact that it can be attached to my wide-mouth Nalgene bottle. I mainly use the lesser filter setting and it always works perfectly for most water I've come across. I've only had to use the heavier filter setting when I was stuck having to use some swampy-looking water. After filtering, the water still had a bit of a light-brownish tinge, but was clear and to my surprise, actually tasted fine. Would highly recommend!

I bought this instead of the other version because it has a somewhat better filter that also removes unpleasant tastes. Unfortunately, the attachment for the input hose broke after the first use. I was very disappointed and had to make an emergency visit to a local outfitter for a replacement. I bought the other version instead. The inlet hose attachment just seems to be attached by cheap plastic so I am guessing this is a point of failure for this device.Additionally, I was glad I was hiking with someone who had the other filter. This filter requires standing water deep enough to keep the intake off the bottom to avoid picking up sediments. These conditions were not always available, making this filter less desireable.
Has good solid feel in your hand and seems will built. It should not let me down in the backwoods. This unit has two filter settings, one goes through a ceramic pre-filter, and one that does not which allows faster filter rate. I personally will use the ceramic pre-filter setting all the times, as there is no way to really clean the main filter element. I like the handle which gives you good leverage for pumping. I wish it had a higher volume rating for the life expectancy of the filter.
Packed this unit around Tasmania and used it to keep a party of 4 people hydrated and healthy. pushed out 10 L each time we refilled in about 15-20 mins with bottle changes and that was on long life mode. Raw water water alpine creeks and lakes, some sediment and colour, plenty of bacteria as well from past experience. Filtered water was clear, good tasting and no one got sick. We pushed 10-20Km a day so refilled a couple of times. The ceramic needed a clean once and the micropore I'll change out due to the amount of muck it removed (and saved us drinking). A little bit weighty at 500g but so worth the effort. Great piece of kit.

The paper filter is expensive but it can be made to last a long time by never bypassing the Ceramic filter. People mention that the pump will leak around the head but this is just a sigh that the ceramic filter is plugged and needs to be cleaned with the supplied pad. It's easy to do in the field. Pumping with a clogged ceramic filter causes a pressure build up in the pump and that is what eventually lead to the demise of my Vario. The pump head broke around the thread lugs that hold the works together. I couldn't find a replacement part available. We used this filter for a one-week backcountry trip to Algonquin. I did not bring the cleaning set as I expected the pump to be fine for one week without maintenance, but I was wrong. After about 5 days the prefilter did not let any more water through. The great thing about this filter, you can simply switch to the filter mode without prefilter, and it would work perfectly find for the remaining days. It’s not the best for the filter life but better than not having enough drinking water!
Only reason in didn't give it 5 stars was weight. I recently used it on a five day hunting trip on Mt Jefferson NV. Water at elevation was scarce and hit hard by the animals in the area. The water was clear but had a lot of sediment at the bottom of the spring with animal droppings everywhere. The feral horses and cows really made a mess of it. I had to clean the ceramic filter after every other fill typically every 3 to 5 liters. I didn't have that problem in the faster moving creeks at lower elevation. Water was always great tasting and clear with no floaters. Great product, have total trust in the equipment and would recommend it to anybody that is as picky as me when it comes to how water tastes.
This thing is amazing. It attaches to a Nalgene bottle and quickly filters water without much effort. I used it recently for four days and was extremely impressed with the build quality and efficiency of operation. It’s also pretty lightweight, but likely a bit heavier than a squeeze type filter.
