Caution: bad sole design fails

I bought a pair of these several years ago, and was so pleased that I bought 2 more. Comfortable fit, so "slipper-like" that I was surprised they were also very stable and supportive. Generous toe box. Waterproof. No break-in for any of them, except for one stiff ankle. I alternated pairs so they could have their day of rest, and oiled them as needed. And then the soles started coming apart. If you look at the picture of the sole, you will see that the big blocks of tread are NOT the outer layer. They stick through holes cut in the outer layer, which wraps up onto the boot with wing- like points. I invested in a boatload of Shoe Goo, which held them together for a couple of weeks at a time. The sole separation led to gaps at the bottom of the leather (at sole level) which destroyed the waterproof-ness, and allowed sand and pebbles into the shoe. Horrible.I live and work in a hot desert, so maybe the adhesives used in these boots were just not up to the heat. Even so, the pointy tips on the side of the outer sole layer were bound to get caught on things and pulled loose. I can't believe I bought the only 3 pairs of lemons. Perhaps Keen has improved their design - but it looks the same to me. I was extremely disappointed, and I have never found another model of Keens that fit my wide toes.

I love these boots. I am a park ranger and bought them for work. They were immediately super comfortable, just like every other pair of Keens I have purchased. I'm not sure about the uncomfortable stitch that other reviewers have mentioned because I truly found these 100% comfortable out of the box. I also really love the look of them. Unfortunately, after only two months of wear, the rubber began to come apart a bit, along with some of the stitching. This was disappointing, but when I contacted Keen they handled it perfectly - I completed the warranty form and within a week it was approved. Very smooth process! These boots are still wearable, just not as tough as my previous Keen boots (Voyageur). Looking forward to picking out another pair.

Great shoes but expected them to last longer
19 July 2022

I got these for christmas 2019 and they were super awesome the first winter/summer I had them for. Everything I wanted and completely waterproof. I take really good care of the leather, however after a year of wearing them for summer hikes, etc. the tread was coming off and the leather was separating from the sole. I've since taken to glueing them with cement glue every once in a while (as recommended by KEEN on their website for this issue), which is annoying. Also the leather has cracked severely in multiple places and the seam is coming across on the section by the heel, so my shoes look worse than my friend (who is having the same issues but has worn hers for 6 years of similar use and doesn't take as good care of them). I love them so I want to get a new pair ... MoreI got these for christmas 2019 and they were super awesome the first winter/summer I had them for. Everything I wanted and completely waterproof. Long-Term Relationship With Keen Pyrenees
18 September 2022

I've had these boots (brown colour) for 5 years before major tearing started to show and become inconvenient for my hikes. Pros: very comfortable for wide feet, moderate ankle support, rubbered toe protects against rocky bumps, grips against steep dirt paths and slightly wet terrain, received compliments of looking aesthetically good. Cons: leather = heavy, bulky, back ankle blisters with short ankle socks, not waterproof during heavy rainfall. Lack of waterproof capabilities is leading me to break up with these boots, as it's already time-consuming for them to air-dry. I'm ready to move on. Overall, I would recommend these boots for moderate use on rough terrain and colder weather - but don't expect them to perform their best in extreme environments.

Most Uncomfortable Hiking Boot. Ever.
19 June 2023

The wide toe box is what drew me to this boot because I have a huge bunion on my right foot. Unfortunately I’ve done two long hikes with these (13 miles round trip) and they still suck. They are so stiff around the ankle and rub above the Achilles/ leg so bad it’s freaking ridiculous. Awful pain. The toe box might actually be too wide. My toes were sliding a bit which never happens. The leather never softens… so hard. I even kept purposefully walking through water to soften the dang things during the hike but as soon as they dried, they were immediately painful. So. Awful. Zero stars. Never recommend. And to be clear, we aren’t light hikers. We’ve backpacked 5 day trails, Grand Canyon rim to rim to rim, backcountry in Canada (Purcell Mtns), and all over Alaska… so a ... MoreThe wide toe box is what drew me to this boot because I have a huge bunion on my right foot. Poor Sole Quality
5 January 2023

I purchased these at the beginning of last year and have done a lot of hiking in them. My biggest issue with these shoes is the soles. They are nowhere near durable enough for a hiking shoe. I've had it happen twice now where a protruding branch has stuck between the treads of the shoe and right into my foot. This is downright dangerous! These shoes should have some kind of protection for your foot. I only had a small injury from this incident but it's a bit of an eye-opener. If you're a long-distance hiker, don't buy these shoes. Keen's quality has gone downhill in the last 10 years.Beyond that, they are a good looking shoe so if its aesthetics you are going for these are good although can be a bit hot in the summer.

The ONLY hiking boots for me!
26 November 2022

I am on my fourth pair in several years and trek the trails with happy feet! Last year, I thought I might want something a bit more rigid and tried a different brand recommended for heavier backpacking and they did not work. After several painful hikes, I am back to my Pyrenees! The Pyrenees have the very roomy toebox that Keen is known for and Keen-dry keeps my feet dry in all conditions.I was told that the Pyrenees has been made with the same sizing for years, but I would say there’s some inconsistency because this new pair required me to go a half size down from my last pair and feels roomier than my previous pair. These are more true to my normal size. The new tan color is fun and always appreciate that two colors of laces are included. The only boots I'll ever buy
5 October 2022

I'm back on the MEC site today because I am buying my 3rd pair of these. Keen is one of the very few brands that truly has a wide fit. I know I can put them on out of the box and walk 10km in them. That's exactly what I did with these. My most recent pair lasted me three years of very hard use before slowly starting to peel away from the sole (the stitching has rotted out). I have treated them like crap. I have postholed through kms of spring snow. I have waded through acres of mud. I have strapped them to snowshoes. I have left them wet in a cabin for DAYS without getting a proper dryout. I have scraped them over the roughest, rockiest terrain you can imagine.Through it all, they have been flawlessly comfortable, fully waterproof, and grippy as heck.My ONLY ... MoreI'm back on the MEC site today because I am buying my 3rd pair of these. Zero grip on wet terrain

I wore these on 3 trips last month (august). Glacier National Park, and Mt. Revelstoke. These boots were purchased to replace my last set of Keens, that I actually returned to MEC. (I had worn them only on the JDF trail, and after only a week of mud & rain the rubber started crumbling off of them!). At first I was impressed with how sturdy and stable they are. Very comfortable, easy to break in, and quite water resistant. But then. The trails I just took them on were higher elevation, and consequently wet. The SLIGHTEST bit of rain or mud on bedrock, wood, metal or even compact dirt turned these boots into skates. ABSOLUTELY NO TREAD. I was actually scared.
