My partner decided to test these out and here’s what he had to say: “I love how light these boots are. Being from the PNW originally, waterproof boots are a must so the combo of lightweight and waterproof make these a great pair of boots. I’m not a huge fan of where the boots sit on my ankles. It’s like the boots can’t decide if they’re a high-top or a low-top. But that may just take some getting used to. Only thing I don’t know is how durable they are.” Y’all, he doesn’t realize these are gonna last for years! I’ve got the women’s version of the Targhee from a few seasons ago and I’ve put them through the wringer but they are still going strong. We love KEEN in this household!

Thank you Influenster and Keen for sending my husband the Targhee IV hiking boots in exchange for our honest review. The boots arrived and I was super pleased with the quality of the boots. Quality footwear is important and you can tell that the Keen brand is quality. My husband is a size 12 medium and found the boots fit true to size with room in the footbed for comfort. He said that the boots although substantial, did not feel heavy on his feet. He liked how his body felt in them and he felt like he could wear them in comfort throughout a long day. He said he would wear them with jeans and not just for hiking. I appreciated that the boots are waterproof and made with recycled bottles. I think he just needs to play around with what works for him. Thanks Keen!

I never tried KEEN shoes before this pair, but I'm really glad I did. In fact, from now on I'll probably own a pair of these for as long as Keen and I both exist. These weren't my usual style of boot I purchase either, but I think they look really sharp. Comfortable right out of the box and feel perfectly broken in by the end of the second day of wear. I put in a few miles of hiking each weekend since I got them and they are absolutely my most comfortable hiking shoes I own. They are incredibly well made too. One thing i normally avoid on a shoe are the looped strap eyes for the laces, but after researching these shoes that doesn't seem to be a problem for anyone else, even people who have owned their shoes for several years still have all the eye loops intact. Do they cost more than your average tennis shoe? Yes. Will they last longer and be more comfortable than the vast majority of any other footwear, seems that way. I can not recommend them enough.

I'm a long time Targhee IV wearer. This is probably my fourth or fifth pair. These are, without doubt, the best version yet. I'm a big man (400+ pounds) and I require a supportive shoe. These are without a doubt the finest shoes I've ever owned. The support my foot unlike any other shoe that I've owned in my adult life. I plan to take them on my annual trip to the Grand Canyon this year. The previous version use to come apart and by the end of their usable life they would be as much 2-part epoxy and Shoe Goo as anything else. De-lamination was a REAL problem and my only real issue with previous generations. These issues appear to have finally been fixed with this new version. I'm looking forward to getting out west and trying them out.
I have the Targhee III hiking boots I bought from REI. They're are well made and comfortable.Sadly, they're not the best for hiking on slippery trails when descending. I wound up slipping while descending on a trail and injuring my knee. The trail had pea gravel embedded into the dirt, and the nearby creek made the gravel a little slick.I believe the reason the boots allowed my feet to slide out from underneath me is that there isn't really any deep tread on the heels; they're basically smooth on the heels. With no tread on the heels to dig into the trail going downhill, there's nothing to keep the boot anchored to the trail. Unfortunately, the Targhee IV suffers from the same heel design flaw.
Have worn Keen Voyageurs for many years. Thought I would give these a try. But the usual size 12 and hit the trails. Fit was a bit loose and top of boot irritated just over my ankle. Exchanged for 11.5 and hit the trails. Same thing. These were just not comfortable for me. Next hike I wore one of the new Targhee’s on one foot and one of my old Voyageurs on my other foot to compare. Difference was night/day. Don’t know exactly what it is but the Targhee’s just didn’t work for me. Ankle height was irritating, fit overall was just not right. I returned the 2nd pair and got a new pair of Voyageurs (lost count how many of these I have owned-all comfortable!). Much appreciate REI’s return policy. Been a Keen customer for a very long time. The quality of the boot is great but the feel of the quality in the insole is probably the most uncomfortable I’ve had to date. You slide all over and feels like there is no cushion or support at all. My feet hurt everyday with these. I don’t know why Keen doesn’t put the “utility insoles” as standard in them. The utility insoles are the best as I’ve had many pairs of Cincinnati’s. This is the first time I tried something different because I wanted something a little lighter in weight.Think the harder/more durable construction of the new sole needs to be complimented by a better quality insole like the “utility”.
I got the tarhee hiking boots. I liked the weight, and the quality. They seemed well made and were light to wear. Traction was good too. I never took them to the woods and put them to the full test because after a couple of hours of wearing them my feet would throb. I thought it was because the needed breaking in, but after 5 days it became clear they was not for me. I really tried to like the shoes, but they hurt my feet. I'll still give hi praise to Keen though, they stood behind their return policy, and their product and gave me no problem returning them. I know people that swear by this brand. I'm sure it's a quality product, it just wasn't for me.
I've been a Keen fan on and off for 20+ years. Once upon a time, all of the toe boxes were more rounded allowing the toes to spread out. It now seems that Keen is more similar to everyone else. Unfortunately these boots continue that trend, even with the wide versions. It is unfortunate since there is a lot to like about the Targhee IV. The sole and tread have held up well on the rocks of the desert southwest. The no delimitation construction. Very robust toe guard. Sharp color combo. The lacing system snugs up perfectly, but it could use a little more padding on the upper portion of the instep. The fit is not what I'm used to with Keen. Snug in the toe box and loose in the heel is not a good combination.I won't be buying another pair. Back to my Oboz.
Keen hypes up their boots and their customer experience. The pair I received had a manufacturing defect. No problem, I'll let them send me a replacement. Well, turns out it was a problem. Keen told me there was no replacement available in my size in the color I ordered, and that it will not be restocked this year, so I couldn't get a replacement. There was no attempt by the rep to try to find a different style in a color I liked, no apology for shipping a defective pair, no attempt to truly make things right. My options were to take a replacement of the same style in color I really don't like, or take a refund. I opted for the refund, obviously. I was told that it would take 5 business days for their backlogged finance office to process my refund on their end. After ... MoreKeen hypes up their boots and their customer experience. After I posted essentially this same review (which was quickly deleted), I did receive my refund pretty quickly. But Keen emailed me yesterday asking for a review. So here's my negative review again, that I'm sure Keen will delete again.
