Best shoe for active, wide footed, Alaskan child

My kiddo is TOUGH on gear! Super tough, but the last pair stayed together for almost a year. He finally tore the toe cover. He wears them hiking, biking, running and just being a kid in all kinds of weather from snow to mud to rain to bright sunny days. They clean up well, are fairly waterproof and easy for my son to get on and off. It was a no brainer what shoe I was going to buy to replace the last pair.

Cord malfunction

My son (age 8) wore this shoe for about six weeks. In that time, we had to fix the cord four times. The cord comes right off the clasp when the child pulls to tighten it. It is simply bad design; the cord wears off prematurely or the clasp/fastener cannot handle the stretch of the bungee cord. I contacted KEEN customer service - online chat agent gave me a standard 'thanks for sharing your feedback' response; it got escalated and the e-mail agent said we'll consider if you fill out our online warranty form.....I'm too tired to being bounced around. This is a bad product PERIOD. Plus the insole is thin and useless (I bought a separate insole).

Fantastic Shoe for Busy Toddler

These shoes are wonderful for toddlers that are BUSY. My toddler is hard on his shoes from running in puddles, kicking rocks, and just being all around destructive. The grip on the rubber is great for all terrains and he loves to wear them too. I sized up since he has a wider foot. The shoes didn't have much give the first couple of times when getting them on, but they loosened quite quickly.

He loved them, then hated them.

Tl;dr - the speed laces make these too hard to snug up properly. These fit fine in the store in his midweight wool socks. He was running, climbing up the rock incline, etc. Next day I guess I tightened them too tight and they were squeezing his feet in his cotton socks. Loosened the speed laces multiple times, and by the time they weren't bothering him, they were too loose and his feet were sliding around. At this point I had him take them off. You shouldn't have to fiddle this much to get a boot for hiking snugged up properly; that is just asking for problems on the trail. Plus, the velcro strap is also pretty limited in the adjustability with only the last little bit having the hook/loop closure, not the whole strap. Really limits the holding power, especially for those with thick ankles. It's a near hit, hence three stars. They have good traction and seem like they'll handle some serious abuse from running, hiking and climbing. But Keen should seriously consider either making these in lace up or with 2-3 velcro straps for true adjustability in the fit and to ease putting them on. These speed laces, in my opinion, are simply not an optimal way to tighten your shoes.

Holds up to active kids, a sneaker on steriods
4 September 2021

I bought all three of my very active boys these shoes (3,5,8) and they have held up fantastically. They are lightweight and comfortable for daily wear, but rugged enough for hiking, camping and Cub Scout adventures. They keep their feet warm and dry through puddle splashing and snow days. I don't have to keep tying laces or worry about them tripping as much thanks to the bungee laces, and they are easy for even my youngest to get his shoes on himself. I originally balked at the price, but the best thing I can say about these shoes is that my kids out grew them instead of destroyed them. They are still in good enough shape to make it through a round of hand-me-downs, which is no easy feat in my household.

Misleading product information
11 May 2022

At the time of writing this review, the picture of this product clearly shows a velcro strap across the shoe. I bought a size 2 for my son, and as you can see in the uploaded photos, no strap. I specifically bought this shoe for that strap because my son is hard on shoes, and he managed to kill the last pair by ripping out the blue ribbon that holds the laces on (seen going around behind the shoe in the picture). Other than that, the shoes are great. But I thought others should know that the picture isn't accurate.

One hike down, more to go
9 April 2019

We just bought these yesterday and went for a hike. My 5 year old son measured a size 10.5 and we bought the 11 after trying them on in the store. A little extra room is good in the toe box as long as it’s generally a snug fit. And my son has a bit of a wide foot for his size, so these worked.I asked him in the store to walk around and do the “test hike.” Then asked if his foot hurt anywhere, if it was tight, if his foot was sliding, if his toes touched the front and he had no issues. So far, so good. Then we hit the nearby trail. We hiked a half mile down and then back up on fairly steep terrerain in paces. Even I slipped a little in my boots about 3 times but he never did (I weigh a lot more, though... so it’s partly physics). That evening I asked him if his feet hurt at all while we were hiking or afterwards and he said no. He was completely happy with our fun day.Not every shoe works for everybody but if you get a good fit this shoe seems great so far

Stayed dry, great traction, comfy
11 September 2021

We took our daughter on a hike in these shoes on a trail crossing some streams and climbing over rocky inclines. Being a kid she put her feet right in the stream. We were considered her feet would be wet, but they stayed bone dry. She also climbed all over rocks, and I could tell she had good traction, and didn’t slip. No complaints about discomfort, either. It has only been one hike so far, but so I ram very happy with them.

Very sturdy shoes
11 September 2022

This is our second pair of these shoes and they are great. My 4 year old wore his old pair for about a year before they were too worn out. He was pretty rough on them. The bungy cord plastic at the end did come off the first pair, but we figured out how to prevent that from happening with this pair by sticking the end underneath the rest of the laces. Definitely a great buy! We got a discontinued color on sale.

sturdy for toddlers
13 October 2021

Got this for my 3yr old hiker for our summer long RV trip to various National Parks. Made sure to leave a little room to grow into and definitely paid off. Easy enough to slide into for my kid and Velcro straps were convenient. Fairly water proof for treks through light snow and rain. My little one was able to rock climb and hike in these no problem, and without the need for hiking socks. Would recommend.
