Beautiful little speakers

So, it requires a nice wipe now and then. I wish there are speaker grilles to the driver as I am constantly worried little kids might damage them. After reading audiophile reviews on the Sony SSCS5s, I thought I'd try those, and took them back the next day after listening. Not sure why the rave reviews on those. Sounded flat to me. The speakers sounded really good at low volume but seemed to get a little muddy at higher volumes. There is a preponderance of midrange and the roll off sound of voices and high notes was just not what I was looking for. There was plenty of detailed bass produced in my home office environment, in fact I had to plug the ports due to placement near the wall. There is also great soundstage. Something I hadn't really experienced before and is really pleasing. Compared to the Q150s, these are much clearer, but maybe not as much depth to the music. If you prefer midrange sound I think you will love the KEFs. I think I'm more of a two-way vee shaped listener so returned the LS50 Metas and bought the JBL L52s instead. Much happier with the JBL sound and musical depth for my setting. The JBLs sound much bigger than they are. Better separation of bass and treble. Cool retro look. Great bass. Will I keep the JBLs? Can't say yet but I like these best out of what I have sampled.

I am baffled at the hype around them. For 1k it's pretty easy to find something with more life to them than these. These kefs are flat and devoid of any emotional involvement.I played a variety of music from indi to classical and I found myself drifting and googling on my phone rather than foot tapping to the sound. Later I plugged them into my AV and stuck Warhammer on. They demonstrated the same level of excitement as I do when asked to do grocery shopping.....I sigh and wish I was more organised. And that's these speakers. They sigh and just wish for ÂŁ1k that they were good.

Excellent small speaker

For many professional reviewers, this is THE benchmark small speaker. I'll focus on a few specific points.I'm using the LS50 Metas in a 400 sq. ft. room with a Lyngdorf TDAI 1120 (a streaming amplifier with room correction) and dual REL T/7x subwoofers. The Lyngdorf is rated at 120 watt into 4 ohms (consistent with professional review measurements). For me, the Lyngdorf does fine with this speaker, even though the LS50 is not efficient. Would more wattage sound even better? I don't know.Without subwoofers, bass is surprisingly good at lower volumes. But the LS50 is not designed to pump out bass at higher volumes. And very low bass simply doesn't exist. Get Them While You Still Can!

I now have three pairs. These are awesome speakers. I’ve been searching for a 3rd pair for a while and was happily surprised when Best Buy had them in stock in Matte Black and new! I also have a pair or the KEF R3 and those are definitely better overall. However the R3 are huge for bookshelf speakers. They do give off much better bass though. The LS50s are great for near field or smaller rooms. They sound much better with a subwoofer. Completely changes the sound stage. I’ve paired them with KC62 and it’s definitely a step up. The build and look are unmatched. Grab them while you can. Especially at clearance price!

Its pretty much impossible anymore to hear speakers before you buy them, especially against other speakers. Instead I relied heavily on reviews I found online as well as what others have written. These speakers are better than I expected. Full field of sound including a very good bass response which surprised me. I especially like that they are bookshelf size so they don't take over my room. I use them with my Cambridge amp which has 75 watts per channel and drives them easily. I am still old school and as much I like wireless, I have a hard time giving up on what works well.

Sensational Standmounts
20 August 2022

These were purchased to replace a pair of the old LS50 black special edition speakers which were pretty good them self. The only issue I had with them was with the lack of bass. I suggested a sub or pair of subs which the boss was having none of. It should be noted that she was perfectly happy with their sound. On a bit of a whim I ordered a pair of the Metas without listening to them. It was always a bit of an issue with my partner that I had got the Black edition instead of the tangerinecoloured driver edition, so 2 birds 1 stone I figured. If i am completely honest I was not really expecting that much of a difference between the 2 sets of speakers. Well I got that wrong!Firstly I really do think the toned down rose finish is lovely, a marked improvement on the originals which were a little too in your face. They also look better in the flesh than in photos. After setting them on their stands & connecting them to a AXR100 Cambridge amp we listened to a streamed playlist via the Bluesound Node 2i. Straight away it was clear that these are very special speakers. The clarity, detail & yes, bass compared to the old LS50s was evident without any run in. The music coming out of these little boxes put big smiles on both of our faces. They sound even better now after a couple of weeks of playing.Of course I'm realistic in what to expect from small standmount speakers concerning bass response, I would still like a sub, but thats not an option my partner will entertain. The bass is very good though & a big improvement. These are excellent speakers which will be an ideal sonic solution for a lot of people. Kef have taken an iconic speaker & made it even more special. For the price they are they offer exceptional value IMO.If you are looking for standmount speakers give these a try.... & put that smile on your face.

These Metas are the most extraordinary speakers i've owned in 35 years of obsessive hifi buying. You will need patience to get the best from them, but when you hit the sweet spot... wow...Initially, I have to say I was completely underwhelmed... I couldn't understand why, when the professional reviews are universally ecstatic. So I read a few user reviews, and found some tips that are invaluable.First off, they took a LONG time to run in - I reckon 150-200 hours - and the difference was extraordinary (i've never had a pair of speakers change that much, and I don't normally believe in running in anyway...). I also had to play around with positioning quite a lot, although note they come with various foam bungs for the rear ports which really do allow you to tune ... MoreThese Metas are the most extraordinary speakers i've owned in 35 years of obsessive hifi buying. I also had to play around with positioning quite a lot, although note they come with various foam bungs for the rear ports which really do allow you to tune the sound - so you will find a place that doesn't compromise your living space. And you MUST use an amp with decent power (my old Nad 7240PE didn't cut it, whereas my Rega Aethos sounds incredible). But once they'd run in and i'd got the setup right... BAM... Suddenly the sound stage fell into place, treble opened up, and now they are captivating.Eg on CD, Michael Jackson "the way you make me feel" slams exultantly, exciting and tight, begging you to turn it up. Radiohead's "Subterranean Homesick Alien" on vinyl is sweeter than I have ever heard it, and that includes bass that's surprisingly extended for the size of cabinet, and tighter than you'll ever hear with a floor stander.I've barely scraped the surface yet on what they can do, but a few weeks in, it's all looking good. If you bear with them and spend a little time on setting up, you'd find it hard to do better with speakers of double the price.

The amount and quality of the sound out of these LS50 Meta’s is stunning. I would disregard any comment that says “at this price” or “no bass”. The LS50 hold their own tonally and sheer size and presence arguably better than Harbeth and certainly better than the Sonus Faber towers I am now selling…. The voices… so real. Couple of comments- they will reveal all flaws in your upstream sources and despite some people’s narratives, these put out a tremendous amount of clean and satisfying bass. I am powering with a Naim Supernait 2 and a Chord DAC and the combination is stunning so your mileage may vary. I suspect I would get similar results with my other Arcam amplifier. I really like these speakers! I’ve gone through and tried out a variety of speakers from the Kef R3’s, Bowers 606 S2, and Martin Logan 15i. I have ultimately settled on these since they provide a very good sound stage, excellent separation of musical instruments in the mix, and they look stellar with the matchin Kef S2 stands! I’m currently powering these with an Arcam SA20 and it does a great job supplying enough power to these speakers. Curious about the Cambridge CXA81, though I think the warmer characteristics of the arcam blend well as this speaker can seem bright out of the box. If you listen to vinyl and love to hear all of the details in the music , these speakers can’t be beat! The R3’s were pleasing, but looked too big on the S2 stands and “melted” the mix ... MoreI really like these speakers!
