Khaled Hosseini A Thousand Splendid Suns
Mariam is only fifteen when she is sent to Kabul to marry the troubled and bitter Rasheed, who is thirty years her senior. Nearly two decades later, in a climate of growing unrest, tragedy strikes fifteen-year-old Laila, who must leave her home and join Mariam's unhappy household. Laila and Mariam are to find consolation in each other, their friendship to grow as deep as the bond between sisters, as strong as the ties between mother and daughter. With the passing of time comes Taliban rule over Afghanistan, the streets of Kabul loud with the sound of gunfire and bombs, life a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear, the women's endurance tested beyond their worst imaginings. Yet love can move people to act in unexpected ways, lead them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with a startling heroism. In the end it is love that triumphs over death and destruction. Paperback, 432 pages.

The way I found this book was unusual as I saw a young lady in the A&E on the TV reading itand was intrigued by it so looked it up on Google and found your site. I was captivated from the start and thoroughly enjoyed it as harrowing as the story is and must admit I shed tears more than once. The women in Afganistan are once again suffering the same treatment from the Taliban. I would recommend it to anyone and have already passed it on to a friend. I have also just ordered his first book The Kite Runner. Can't wait to read that one.

I found this novel not only a great read but, also an incredibly interesting book! The author's revelations about the history, the harshness of the way of life, and the supression of the people was breathtaking. Though i was incredibly moved both at the beginning, when Mariam eventually discovered that her mother had told the truth (and the terrible results that occured),but also by the relationship that developed between the two women. the incredible brutality of Rasheem both horrified and appalled me and i frequently found myself gasping in shock. When the women eventually tried to get away, and foolishly trusted the young man with the gentle eyes,i wanted to slap his face for betraying them and stealing thier money!.The two women lived the most horrendous existence ... MoreI found this novel not only a great read but, also an incredibly interesting book! I was left feeling bereft at the ending of Mariam, which made me cry, though i was glad that Laila eventually found happiness.I actually started to read this book at2.15pm Saturday and quickly became engrossed, missing teatime and suppertime, and eventually wearilly ending the book at 3.30am, utterly shattered!(My husband knew what would happen as soon as i started the book, knowing what i was like when i started to read the authors first novel). The Kite Runner was a fantastic novel, and A thousand Splendid Suns comes a very very close second. Thank you Khaled Hosseini for an amazing read!!

It was a sad book, but so wonderfully written. A book that makes you think. You can smell the spring blossoms and feel the cold snowflakes. There is a big fight scene and you literally feel like your ribs are being broken too. Well worth a read

Always wanted to read this as i have heard so much about this book so got it (along with the kite runner) at lowest price i could have in compared to any other sites or ig sellers. Also the quality of the books were really good (the kite runner being like literally new)Coming to the book itself story is about two women lives intersecting with each other and providing so much emotions
Okay I am really in between two worlds when it comes to book, as a practicing Muslim this book can be very daunting to read and makes me as a Muslim wonder what the true intents of Khaled Hosseini is in writing this book. It's difficult to tell. He certainly doesn't have all that much of a clue of Islam and it's teachings and hence should have refrained from enforcing his views on certain topics in the book on which he has no knowledge of in Islam and these examples are manifested in this book. As controversial as this book was from a Muslim perspective, I will not walk away saying this book was a load of rubbish in terms of how it negatively portrayed Islam, but that rather it gave me a newfound level of endurance in life for all things to come and where I thought ... MoreOkay I am really in between two worlds when it comes to book, as a practicing Muslim this book can be very daunting to read and makes me as a Muslim wonder what the true intents of Khaled Hosseini is in writing this book. It's difficult to tell. As controversial as this book was from a Muslim perspective, I will not walk away saying this book was a load of rubbish in terms of how it negatively portrayed Islam, but that rather it gave me a newfound level of endurance in life for all things to come and where I thought I knew what suffering and trials and tribulations were, this book really thought me what such is and has again granted me a new level of patience and also a new perspective on life and for I am very grateful. Thankfully as I am already informed on how Islam deals with a lot of issues in this book, it didn't swerve me the slightest away from my faith but I can imagine Muslims who do not really learn or understand their faith will have difficulty in well, thinking "I never could have imagined Islam is so evil." So it very important for us to educate ourselves on how Islam deals with these aspects of life. Many women I have learnt had accepted Islam through seeing the rights and responsibilities a husband must have to his wife and how marriage is treated. There are undoubtedly a plethora of stereotypes, Muslim stereotypes in this book and of course a lot of them are lies but maybe I'll leave you to figure it out :/ Now my conclusion to this is a little of a double edged sword. I think you perhaps should read it as it will teach you what really suffering is and grant you a newfound level of patience and then perhaps you should absolutely not due to the very incorrect image of Islam you may well receive at the end of the book. Thank you for reading my view anyway guys!
I have read a lot of war-based novels, but this one especially broke me into tears. A Thousand splendid suns, story of two women Mariam and Laila in Afghanistan torn apart by war on one side and domestic abuse by husband on the other. This book would really perturb you and appreciate the unnoticeable happiness in life. BOOKISH SANTA as always does great work with packing and bookmarks💯
I read this book in my high school AP Lit class and absolutely LOVED it! We also read The Kite Runner, but I much preferred this book. It's heartbreaking and heavy but an absolutely amazing read from a wonderful author. I reread it recently and still loved it the same way. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a good thought-provoking read
I chose this book to read on holiday and absolutely couldn't put it down. Very entertaining and so well written, with lots of surprises in the plot. More importantly, however, I learned a lot about the history of violence and war in Afghanistan and how this has affected every day people. As a woman in particular, this book was very poignant and I would urge any woman to read it. Could not recommend this book enough!
A Thousand Spendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini definitely is an epitome of love in paper. It makes the reader live several lives simultaneously. The feelings and emotions of the characters are so vividly expressed. The book is itself an institution preaching the values and the ways to deal with the difficulties in life. On a personal level, it has made me change my mind about various aspects in life. Tariq's love for Laila, Mariam's selfless affection towards Aziza and Laila have such deep impressions in my mind. If I were to suggest one book for anyone to read at any point in their lives it would be this epic.
LOTR is known to be mother of fantasy genre since a very long time. Being a fan of Harry Potter series it was a pleasure to read this. I was always skeptical about buying online books and that too only from the sites of online shopping which were too costly but santa belives in gifting rather than making profit and this site is real santa for me. Thank you Santa and as always love your gifts. You are the most trustworthy.
