Makes delicious frozen treats

It was so delicious and way better than store bought in my opinion also a lot healthier for me too. The bowl was a breeze to clean and store away for when I needed to use it again which I love, so that I didn’t have another appliance cluttering up my kitchen counter. I’ve made tons of frozen treats with this from traditional ice cream to non dairy versions and even no added sugar fruit sorbets. I’m so please with this attachment especially how easy it to use. I highly recommend it!

Makes great ice cream, but has its issues.

I bought the KitchenAid -Ice Cream Maker on the advice of my daughter. The bowl is quite heavy which I expected. It is a double walled bowl with a liquid in between the two bowls. This liquid when frozen, keeps the bowl frozen solid when making ice cream. It comes with two other pieces, one being the dasher (paddle) and the other the drive assembly. The drive assembly is the biggest fail on this unit. I have seen videos where the host snaps the drive assembly on to the mixer. I don't know where they got this one, but the one I have is a friction fit unit where it slides up against the mixers output shaft. It does nor click or lock in. I don't know where they got this one, but the one I have is a friction fit unit where it slides up against the mixers output shaft. It does nor click or lock in. You press the rubber mounted drive assembly onto the mixer's output shaft and it just sits there. I found it hard to keep it in a perfect alignment with the mixer. I had to look at a You Tube video on how this attached to the mixer as the instruction was poorly written.Once installed, I placed the bowl under the mixer and turned it on. I had to readjust the drive assembly to get it to keep from wobbling. Once it was aligned, it fit nicely into the dasher. As the ice cream mix started to thicken, the high torque Artisan mixer had no trouble blending the ice cream. The drive assembly did wobble a bit throughout the process, but did not come apart. The manual comes with one ice cream recipe, and I thought they could have done a better job with this.If you follow the instructions and freeze the bowl for 16 hours or more, it will make great ice cream after 20 minutes of mixing time. I have made 4 batches so far, adding different syrups to the mix making for different flavours. This bowl does everything it is advertised to be. It is solid and comes with all the attachments needed to make great ice cream.I store my bowl in a bag when it is in the freezer. One thing to note is if you have any water droplets or dew in the bowl, you will get ice cream with those yucky ice crystals in it. When pouring your 1/2 & 1/2 cream or heavy cream into the bowl for mixing, make sure there are no tiny lumps in the cream. This will come out as a gooey bits of ice cream at the end.I would give the well designed bowl and dasher a deserved 5 star rating, but the drive unit which seemed like a design after thought 2 stars, hence my final 4 star rating.

Makes perfect ice cream if you have patience

The KitchenAid ice cream attachment makes hard serve easily as long as you have patience. First, it requires a minimum 15 hours for the bowl to freeze. Then it mixes in about 20 minutes. And finally, it takes around 24 hours to fully harden into the right texture. It was extremely frustrating during the first use because the instructions are unclear. I waisted 30 minutes trying to "attach" it to the KitchenAid, but it isn't designed that way. The driver assembly simply slides onto the mixer. The dasher doesn't attach to anything and just sits perfectly in the bowl. I followed a standard recipe base and added cocoa powder with a small 60% cocoa bar to make chocolate ice cream. Instructions say to let it slowly stir, so I set it to speed 1. After 25 minutes of mixing, it was beginning to overflow the bowl. This is where you have to work fast. You need to quickly transfer it to a container or it will easily melt. I put it in a large 1 gallon bowl and froze it. Several hours later, it was still very soft but the next morning it froze completely. The texture was perfect and not too hard or soft. I'd definitely recommend this.

Took some time to figure out wasn't wrong part

I initially thought the drive mechanism didn't fit (new Artisan mixer, new ice cream bowl). The directions and illustrations show it being directly mated to the power head. It was only after some time (longer than it should have taken me) that I figured out it is a "wedge" that you slide on - the illustrations in the manual don't show this.Even then, it would fall off but if I held it in place it would easily mate with the dasher (paddle) and worked fine. My son can slide it on so it doesn't fall off - many woman don't have the hand strength to do this. When I finally reached the help line I had it working but was told they got lots of call for this and to hold the drive mechanism in place while lowering the tilt head. The other issue I see is there is not a LOUD ... MoreI initially thought the drive mechanism didn't fit (new Artisan mixer, new ice cream bowl). You MUST wait to add your mixture until after you turn the machine on.Basically - the mixer/ice cream bowl works great but the directions suck and cause problems. This should be a simple fix by updating the online manual and sending copies to purchasers.

Very easy to use and even easier to clean

I cannot say enough good things about this attachment. I thought the bowl was small but the yield is great! There is about 5 cups of ingredients that go into the recipe that I use and by the time the 25-minute mark hits for mixing, the bowl is FULL and the ice cream is tasty. The consistency is VERY soft though. With the bowl perfectly frozen and using ice cold ingredients I would have hoped it would be a little thicker when finished mixing. The resulting product is very thin, like melty soft serve. Easily fixed of course by transferring to the freezer to harden up but I wish it was a little thicker straight away. The bowl has a liquid in between the layers that when placed in the freezer becomes "ice" and freezes the bowl. It does need to be in there for about 8 ... MoreI cannot say enough good things about this attachment. I thought the bowl was small but the yield is great! It does need to be in there for about 8 hours to be fully frozen so planning ahead is essential. The attachment head /paddle are easy to use and easy to clean. The whole unit is quite lightweight. It is very quiet while being used as well, which I love. All in all this is a great addition to the mixer, I am only giving it 4 stars due to the consistency of the resulting product.
