Trying on a new type of film I’ve never used before.Kodak Portra 400. Very popular amongst film photographers as it is versatile for day and night, heat and cold.Colors are very much toned down and almost pastel like. Red, blue, green and pink are very dominant and almost bursting out of the picture and soothes the eye with a warm touch for extra comfort. I reckon I’m going to use this type of film for winter or anything else with these type of colors to calm down everything just like the cold itself.

As a relative beginner to shooting film (I have now shot a few rolls), Portra 400 has been absolutely brilliant both times I used it. The colours are really creamy and almost pastel, and it's quite forgiving in regards to exposure. The hype is right, this film is epic. I would say maybe don't try this when it's too dark (without a tripod), as the grain can be pretty overpowering when the film isn't given enough light. It renders skin tones super nicely, and I love the greens it gives in landscapes. Just a total all-round brilliant filmstock. The all-round nature of it lends to its usefulness in travel - you could go on holiday (as I did) with just a few rolls of this and you should have many nice shots. A premium film that gives premium results. The colours and image quality that this film provides at 400 speed are unrivalled. It can handle almost all situations with ease and the results speak for themselves. I would not recommend this film to someone who is just starting out on their photography journey, due to the price, but this is definitely a film to try when you have got the hang of things.

So I'm a sucker for consistency. It's nice to know what you're working with. This pack was ordered for a wedding, because I needed the peace of mind.From B&H so I knew it had been stored well, would arrive on time, and m would be the genuine product. So overall, this film is as good as what people say. It's colours are excellent, the grain is as expected for 400 ISO and it renders very nicely, however at the current asking price from Kodak (Which at the time of this review, gives a price on AW of £18, and I've heard some people asking £20 elsewhere) I do not feel that it is worth the price vs Kodak Gold, Ektar or Vision3 motion picture stock. It may be for you, but for me the mark up compared to these excellent films makes it one that I will be unlikely to shoot again.

I've tried it again recently and rated it at EI200 in camera, but had it developed normally, with much cleaner and consistent results. The colours are muted and even, and you can recover a lot of shadow detail with this film. It has fine grain for a 400 speed film, and I will probably use my remaining rolls for birthdays or parties to get an elevated everyday look. What can I say? Let's just say you don't need to be a professional to use this film. Probably the only professional film stock in current production to that gives pleasing skin tones, accurate colours, and the finest grain. A great all-rounder in all lighting conditions. A must-try for anyone even though it's quite pricey now!!

If you want 800 speed you could probably get away with pushing this instead of spending too much on Portra 800 too, although I've yet to try it. Portra 400 is basic, it's consistent, it's pastel, and it's beautiful. I think I've made my point. If you want richer greens reach for Fuji. There's no really wrong answer when it comes to film just preferences but this film slaps. It's the standard.
A very versatile film. Great for varied situations. It can used for both landscape and portrait. I was very impressed with the little grain that some images taken on a sunny day using Kodak Portra had. Some others taken in darker days and / or space present more grain, but I personally think it gives the images the special touch only acquired with film photography.Highly recommended.
I get adequate shutter speed and minimum grain with the Portra 400 when I need to stop action from running & leaping Labs like the one seen here. Easy when he is still, not so easy when he is on the move and I'm trying to frame him with a long lens. The Portra also seems to be less challenging at the photofinisher. I've had some Ektar 100 that had some odd color shift, repaired in the digital scan. The Portra has always come out correctly. Nice film, recommended.
