An extraordinary musicical instrument and remarkable for its size and cost.Virtually, a DX7 in a box, only easier to use. And what a beautiful, big and rich sound. I am going to be using it with my Korg Opsix and Elektron Syntakt.I am seriously contemplating buying a second one.

I got the Volca Sample a year ago, and it's lots of fun, but I wanted to expand my sound palette for playing in real time. The Volca FM2 hits the button! Creates rich deep sounds with plenty of shaping capabilities. As with the Volca sample, it takes a bit of effort to get the most out of it, and you have to be prepared to work around its limitations, but if you're new to synths this is a great introduction, and tiny enough to carry a bunch of them in a small bag.

I have been playing guitar for about 4 years now, and see myself as fairly knowledgeable with musical concepts, and technically proficient on my instrument. However, I wanted to expand my horizons and learn keyboard, and experiment with fm synthesis. This synth delivers both a great keyboard learning experience (despite the three note polyphony) and a great foundation for getting into synthesis. I would imagine even an experienced keyboard player could make good use of this instrument if they wanted to get into fm synthesis. I would recommend buying a midi controller with this, though, as the ribbon keys are prone to playing the notes adjacent to the one you actually want. What is FM sound? "Zzzz", sonant and loud the same time transparent when compared with some kinds of thick and rude analog bass. Very "electronic" sound. Piano is the most banal purpose (electropiano of course), but also it can do easily bells, longer pads and even some kind of bass, reminding or not reminding tb303 sequencies. More sounds... tweak it. Robotic speaking, oldschool game sounds or something more gentle with thoroughful tuning. Drum sounds? You can try and get maybe something acceptable, but i'd say "hardly" in general. It is not a drum synth. What is a bit confusing: fast attack produces very audible "switch-on-click" (by the way envelope settings are exactly rates, not times - i.e. 99 means the fastest and 0 means the slowest). All the rest is more for tuning than for playing, but depends of... ... and the last I wanted to say: please do not consider this machine(s) as the center, the heart of your setup! It is a spice, ok let be component. It is not the whole main dish.
The Korg Volca FM is about the size of my hand and produces sounds that will blow your mind! I could never afford a DX7 when they came out in the 1980's and now for less than a few hundred dollars you can get those great sounds! The Korg Volca FM is a module that is even capable of supporting the thousands of original DX7 patch data files that already exist. In addition, it has an onboard 16 step sequencer and arpeggiator and is 3 voice polyphonic and chorus built it. I feel like saying BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE! but you can read all about the entire Volca series from Korg online. I placed my order online with ProAudioStar and I received mine in just a few days! No problems at all.

KORG come up with sexy designs but march to the weird beat of their own commercial drum, giving priority to surprisingly sophisticated features but at the price of leaving some important funcionalities off the menu, Thus requiring the user to accept and devise work arounds. In this case - MiDi out, keyboard velocity and patch storage space are the big omissions.. I'm not quite sure what to make of the FM in my short time with it so far. The Volca Sample seemed easier to bend to my will. Chimes and tines are clear enough, but unlike the Sample it doesn't seem to have its own sonic identity. I don't find it much easier to use than other FM synths - as I said at the top - what KORG give with one hand they take away with the other.. The knobs do speed up parameter changes, e.g. attack and decay is on the top level..hurrah...,.. but there is no space to store custom patches - boo! - sadly you have to overwrite the surprisingly nice presets. I recommend the Patch Base IOS app editor, although I have yet to try it. This should open up editing and storage quite a bit. Velocity is restricted to a slider, but parameter changes can be recorded which saves the day somewhat. To clarify - connecting a controller keyboard will not give you velocity response from the keys. In summary there is plenty here to enjoy and it's a good introduction to FM synthesis but one has to accept the little Volca FM for what it is; a tiny miraculous box of compromises, A good musician will devise a workflow path to make it sing, and like all Volcas there is a great deal of satisfaction in transcending its toylike origins. Reminds me of my old classic Mini Cooper. Cute and In the right hands; a giant killer. Unlike the Mini, the KORG is actually put together properly, so to sum up - it's a qualified thumbs up from me.
Amazing FM Synth, Full DX7 compatibility and now with Velocity; at a price and size you can't beat. So worth it! I connect it to my Midi controller and use it with my midi guitar. It is awesome with plenty of polyphony for my 6 strings (yes it has exactly 6 note polyphony). If you are thinking about it, just buy it. There are others, but they cost so much more and not necessarily the same amount of capability. The only thing you need to be afraid of is wanting to buy another Volca like the Sample.....

When you buy one make sure it is the Type A version.To interface with your computer (which you are definately going to want to do) you will need either an Audio Interface or MIDI Interface Cable. Make sure you get one that will support and transmit SSY-EX/ SYX Data. Many of the cheaper off brand MIDI Interface Cables do not. I use the Roland UM-ONE-MK2, it costs a few dollars more but it works.Bottom Line, this a great sounding FM Synth, based upon the original DX7 Sound Engine, with HUGE improvements in your ability to program it at a incredibly low price.
First thing I did was install the og DX7 patches, plugged it into my amp, and OMG, the wall of sound that came out of my speakers was pure 80s bliss.The months of anticipation waiting for this to release were worth it. It's exactly what I hoped it would be.
