Kowa TSN-553 15-45x55 Prominar Angled Spotting Scope with Zoom Eyepiece
Equipped with a lens made of pure fluorite crystal, this unique compact spotting scope will make your travels impressive and unforgettable. The heart of the TSN-550 PROMIAR spotting scope is undoubtedly the lens made of pure fluorite crystal. This mineral, which also occurs in nature, has the outstanding property of extremely low dispersion, which is not found in normal optical glass. By using this crystal, which has been artificially grown for our use, it is possible to eliminate the phenomenon of chromatic aberration right into the invisible range and drastically increase the resolution and contrast of the image. In the field of sports optics, Kowa is the only manufacturer in the world to use this high-quality material in lenses. The exclusive use of fluorite crystals in Kowa's top products is a testament to decades of optical development and the unconditional desire to offer the best possible optics. With a length of just 27cm and a weight of only 800g, the TSN-500 PROMINAR is the perfect travel companion. The TSN-550 PROMINAR is not just a spotting scope, it also underlines the owner's character as someone for whom the best is good enough. Equipped with absolutely top optics and high-quality mechanics, it is completely waterproof and nitrogen-filled. As compact as it is robust, it guarantees outstanding imaging performance even in the toughest environments.

I have been looking for a compact travel scope for a while. The alternatives (such as Nikon ED50 or Vortex Razor HD) always felt too much like a compromise. This one is a real jewel and on a par with some of the best spotting scopes of the 65mm class.Pros:- Small and light- Smooth and reliable focus- Bright image for a 55mm scope- High resolution, even at 45x magnification- Useful magnification range- Comfortable eye relief for wearer of glassesCons:- Relatively small field of view (normal for a zoom eyepiece)

I don't have much experience with scopes to compare to, but I didn't want to waste my money on something I would upgrade in a few years. I can't compare this to the 800 models, but I know that this size and weight would make this worth the buy for most people!Recently, I encountered someone who had a bird in their scope that was a rare bird and I digiscoped it to document the sighting, because I didn't want to bother finding it in the scope myself. The picture was such poor quality compared to what I've been taking with my Kowa TSN 553. I'd recommend this to anyone.

Great price and fast delivery on this Kowa spotter. I was happy to get the anniversary addition since it is in black vs green finish. Optics are stellar and focus mechanisms are very easy to use. My only complaint on this spotter is the armoring. Not at all nice finish, super rough texture that feels like it will hold dirt and is difficult to clean since it grabs microfiber cloth. I'd love to see Kowa move to something rubberized. That being said the weight vs optical quality is really outstanding here A++.

Great light weight scope. Absolutely competes with all the bigger, heavier more expensive spotters. If you are hiking, hunting etc... this is the scope 100%. It is much brighter , clearer and sharper than the size would indicate. If shooting from one spot only and no need for mobility then the bigger scopes do have a slight advantage. This scope clearly shows animals details/rack size points etc... out past 1500 yards easily. At this price point I expected excellence. It has exceeded those expectations. Wonderful optics !!!
I use this scope for birdwatching. I did not purchase this scope because I was unhappy with the quality of my 82mm scope. I purchased it to have a scope that is less than 1/2 the weight of a full size scope. When going on a hike where reducing the overall weight is a prime consideration, this scope fills the bill. There is no compromise in image quality. If you are looking to reduce weight in your equipment, this scope could definitely be your answer.
I have been searching for a spotting scope for some time now and was considering many higher end scopes but found the kowa 553 scope to fit the bill of what I needed best, proving high quality optics along with a light compact build, with the ability to attach my camera to it. I can say the scope has met all my expectations and even exceeded them.
Great scope. Clear and sharp to the edges. Lightweight and compact. Some say the body feels cheap as it is a polycarbonate body but this is what makes it lightweight. Flourite glass is amazing! Price is right - much cheaper than Zeiss, Leica or Swaro but performance is on par or better. 15-45x 55mm objective is perfect combination....had a 60x Swaro never used 60x unless conditions were perfect as clarity suffered: And, given the weight, quality of glass, price and how often I went above 50x, Kowa is perfect.
Good Points: Incredibly light and compact, extremely clear and bright image. Easy to focus with wide angle at 15X, then stays in focus whilst zooming up to 45X. Well worth the price. Also allows simple digiscope photography if separate smartphone adaptors are purchased.Improvement Points: No, it's brilliant!
This is a very nice scope but a few issues worth mentioning. At 15x-25x this is amazingly sharp for its size even better than the Swarovski ATS-65 HD 20-60x65mm (I reviewed that one as well on B&H site). I tried the two right next to each other and found the Swarovski not as sharp. At 30X the Kowa on a bright sunny day with not a lot of wind is crystal clear and can not be beat for its size. The brightness of course does not compare but the sharpness is impressive on this little guy.The eye piece is extremely nice but I was a bit disappointed with eye relief. I wear glasses and found the view occasionally somewhat limiting and depending on the position I was standing in and I would get some side glare occasionally and would cup my hand to block out the light. ... MoreThis is a very nice scope but a few issues worth mentioning. I wear glasses and found the view occasionally somewhat limiting and depending on the position I was standing in and I would get some side glare occasionally and would cup my hand to block out the light. My wife does not wear glasses and did not complain. It being so light creates issues and as soon as that zoom kicks in at 45x you will struggle to keep things razor sharp if it is windy or cloudy. You will not lose sharpness thanks to fluorite glass I imagine but brightness is extremely diminished. Still an impressive little scope. The dual focus knobs are great. So easy to travel with, it is impressively light. I think Kowa has some amazing scopes and I wish I could afford the 77 or 88 but this size is for a birder that struggles with weight in the field I imagine, and doesn't mind losing some of the pop bigger scopes offer. I think Kowa would have done a better job investing in improving a 60 to 65mm scope and making that technology light for it to be fully functional for birders. I think the perfect scope would be a 60 from Iowa which adds a lit more pop to the view and increase the eye relief a bit but I am sure there are limits to what they can create. I am trying out the some other 65's in a similar price range. In my opinion the scope is a bit overpriced for the difficulties I had with sharpness and brightness in windy and cloudy conditions. Still was impressive for its size!I will repeat- on a sunny day with little wind you will be blown away by the view of this little scope. And if you mostly bird in calm and sunny areas you will not be disappointed. I struggled getting some shorebirds ID'd on the beach on a windy day that were very far away but till was able to see them as long as I was patient and weighed the tripod down...Hope this review helps make an informed decision.
