This is first time I have written a review and to be honest, it's the first time I have had something worthy of such acclaim. These speakers are absolutely amazing. After hooking them up and listening to some music, I was speechless. If you are putting together a home studio, get these... end of story. Even if you don't record, these speakers will let you hear your music the way it was meant to be heard. You hear every nuance and subtlety that most speakers just can't reproduce. Bottom line, you will not be disappointed.

I have been slowly putting together a home studio setup, and I finally got fed up with the erratic results of mixing in headphones and on commercial grade speakers so I decided it was time to spring for some entry level studio monitors. I talked to a recording engineer friend of mine and he told me that his first pair of monitors were KRKs so I went with these. I've only been using them for a few days and already I am making mixes that are better balanced and much more uniform across different listening situations. So far I am an extremely satisfied customer. They sound great, are built tough, have a ton of input options and great frequency control. They look really cool (I love that the KRK logo on the front is back lit) and the price is awesome. I say buy them!

KRK Studio Monitors
7 February 2012

Look no further for studio monitors I have these in my home and my interface doesn't have the 1/4" connection. I was told that they would sound much better if I had the larger cables. The base is scary it's so loud. No distortion even when you turn it up. Also like the yellow speaker baffle and the small light behind the KRK logo to let you know the power is on. Very classy design.

Not for POD X3 Live users
21 January 2011

Looking for the perfect live solution to use with my Pod X3 live, I decided to give active monitors a try. I first tried the M-Audio BX5a. Incrdible sound with the X3L - but I experienced some popping on one of the speakers so I exchanged for these - based on all the hype. I was not impressed. I hooked up my X3L direct using XLR's. The speaker volume was way low using the guitar, and I couldn't even hear my MP3 backing tracks over the guitar. I increased volume to max on all devices, and still not... very loud. I reconnected the X3L using 1/4" line outs. OK, now they got loud. Unfortunately, this setup causes A LOT of clipping and distorts the KRK's something awful. In order to stop the clipping, I had to turn the volume WAY down - back to the point where they aren't very loud. I later found out that these KRK's are only 35 watts! That's half of the M-audios. Not sure what all the hype is about, but I was not impressed. Unfortunately, I am going back to GC for my 5th exchange and going back to the M-audio's. They sound gorgeous with the POD X3L. I'll just have to deal with the quality issues and get the extended warranty.

Poor Quality
12 May 2013

I have read surprisingly good things about the Rokit series which lead me to this purchase.First pair I ordered, one of the speakers stopped working after two uses. It was replaced hassle free by Musicians Friend; I didn't even have to pay the return shipping which was awesome. After it was replaced, 30 days later another one started to break down. The volume pot in the back is really dirty and the signal drops +10 dB frequently. Never owned such an unreliable shoddy pair of monitors (except the Alesis MkII's - ha)Sound does not translate well. There is a generous amount of false bass, due to the front ports (which I expected), but I was really surprised at how amplified the low frequencies are considering the size of the speakers and the size of the room.

Super Sound - sensitive to PC noise.

I am mainly a videographer, but also compose/produce my own music, as well as work with other amateur musicians. These monitors sound great! I realize you're not going to find them in an LA superstar studio, but man do they still sound goooood! Hi's mids and lo's are all there in there own place, rather than a mushy all-together sound. Serious volume too, without distortion. On installation I had an issue with computer sounds coming through the monitors. I was about ready to send them back. After extensive Googling (and finding many others suffering the same issue with RokIt's) it turned out to be a BIOS setting. (Disable C1, EIST) Check this out if you have this issue: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/329790-28-processor-noise-coming-speakersNow, if I hold my ... MoreI am mainly a videographer, but also compose/produce my own music, as well as work with other amateur musicians. These monitors sound great! These are 5 inch speakers?!?! REALLY!?!?!
27 May 2011

Overall, I was made a fool of by these things. I doubted them and they shoved their awesome sauce in my face. I read some reviews of people saying these babies couldn't go loud enough and I must say that is a user error. These things shake my windows, and you think I'm joking when I say that. If you are thinking about getting these, do, you won't find better.Has everything you need and just a tad more.I can't believe these are only 5 inch monitors. They blew my mind, I took them out of the box being like, "they are kind of small". I plugged them in and I was proven wrong. Size can be deceiving with these monsters. In my opinion the best 5 inch monitors with an amp you can get on the market. These things sound bigger then some 6 inch monitors I have heard.

You MUST Choose With Your Own Ears!
17 September 2011

The very last thing that you should EVER do is buy a set of monitors based on reviews. That's what I did with the KRK Rokit 5's. I have a very good bit of recording/listening experience but I am far from being a "professional" sound engineer. So... I listened to the advice of many people who (are) fans of the KRK's. Typically, I add NOTHING to my home studio without fully experiencing it.Don't get me wrong, there ARE a lot of people who really like these monitors. For me personally however, they're very muddy and add a lot of bass. I have A/B'ed them with 4 other listening devices and on every single mixdown, of many styles of music, the result was the same... muddy and bassy comparatively speaking.Monitor choice is a HUGE deal when it comes to your home or ... MoreThe very last thing that you should EVER do is buy a set of monitors based on reviews. You absolutely MUST spend the time and purchase what sounds good only to YOU. Everyone hears differently than everyone else. As for me, it's back to Sennheiser headphones until I find the right monitors for my ears.

Your next Buy.
25 March 2010

I put these up against some Tannoys the other day. Both speakers were active, the Tannoy's just a bit taller. The Rokit 5's held their own. And are about half the price. Tannoy has always had a great reputation when it comes to monitors. These Rokit 5's by KRK are wonderful. For a small room,or studio... Look no more. this is it. Buy these!!!! You will never miss anything sonicallyAnd I'll say this, in this field one is always feeling like your not keeping up with the pro- studios. Yes, you can spend thousands on monitors. But Dollar for Dollar you cannot beat these. Personally within KRK I like the 5's better than the 6's
