A Good Pen Even When Dried Out

This pen is very light in the hand (physically)-perfect for quick sketching, especially with smaller, handheld drawing surfaces. I recommend it as a starter pen for students or brush-inking novices who aren't confident using India ink (or before investing in more expensive pens from Kuretake or others). The bristles keep their shape for extended use, but even frayed near the end of a pen's life, they serve well for dry brush effects. The pen's surface is overly smooth to handle, but that may be beneficial to others. The pen cap stays on tight at the brush end for storage, but I have encountered caps that don't sit firmly on the butt end while working.

A very interesting and fun brush marker

I love these markers for hand-lettering projects, and for sketching pre-project ideas. Though... it does not just melt when it touches water the way I was hoping. It's water soluble yes, but not a watercolor marker. It leaves a lot of hard lines when trying to create a watercolor type painting. #Sweepstakes

Fantastic "on the go" watercolor markers!

I'm new to painting and these markers are a great alternative to carrying around tubes or trays of paint. The markers themselves are as advertised: real brush tips that are vibrant and have a very fine tip that can flatten just like a real brush would. The colors are true and bright, for the most part I use them like you would most paints by putting some paint on a palette and then use my portable water brush to pick up the amount of paint I need then start painting. The colors and markers blend easily, but I find layering and blending easier with a water brush as opposed to using the markers directly on the paper. The colors do not lose their vibrancy when using a water brush. The markers work best on smooth Bristol paper. I use these brush pens mainly to color images on greeting card fronts. I love them. The color inside the pen seems to last forever. The tip is short and easy to control. I've never had one fray. They are my favorite brush pens.

Great brush markers at a good price
4 July 2023

There is a bit of a learning curve when using these brush pens as opposed to a felt tip (ex. copic markers), and it's that to get the most pigment out of the brush, you have to use the tip of it. This isn't an issue for me as I use these markers for doodling, but if someone wants to use them for big illustrations it might be tedious. This color set is great. Colors can be blended out with water using watercolor brushes. Great to have.

Great for hand lettering! So so for watercoloring.
11 August 2024

I use these for hand lettering as well as in conjunction with or instead of watercolors. They are PERFECT for hand lettering! You can get a detailed point and wider lines as well in one stroke. As for watercoloring, it is more of a challenge. It creates hard lines when used with water, and the markers could be juicier if you are creating a longer stroke. It tends to start to run out by the end. Overall though, I enjoy these markers, and love that they come in SO many colors!

I'm in love!

I love the effects I can achieve with these markers. My new obsession is using them in mixed media. They create a painterly effect and once you get used to them, are easy to use. Vellum surface bristol board is my preferred paper with these. For now. Lol!

These are brushes (not markers)
7 April 2023

Recently I have been doing "modern calligraphy" with brush markers. Those are a specific type of markers that come to a point (not a flat edge). I bought these thinking they were brush markers but they aren't, they are "brush pens," like the name says. They have individual hairs that move around the way other types of paintbrushes do, but instead of dipping a paintbrush into pigment, these have the pigment flowing into the brush from the handle. They are different from brush markers. Brush markers don't have individual hairs like paintbrushes, they have sort of a mass of fiber that stays put. I just wanted to clarify that for people who are not sure what these are. You could use these for pointed-brush calligraphy, but pointed-brush calligraphy isn't the same as ... MoreRecently I have been doing "modern calligraphy" with brush markers. You could use these for pointed-brush calligraphy, but pointed-brush calligraphy isn't the same as using brush markers for modern calligraphy (and it's not that easy to do). If you are looking for paintbrushes with the pigment built in, these are quite nice and would be very portable. The bristles are short and come to a nice point. They do not appear to be lightfast, so if they were used for artwork exposed to light I believe it would eventually fade.

These are wonderful, quality watercolor brush pens.
18 March 2022

I have begun using watercolor brush pens and have found that Kuretake Zig Clean Color pens are the best. I also have a set of Chromatek, which are good but not equal to Kuretake. With any of these brush pens you need to use the correct paper and that seems to be watercolor paper. These pens blend beautifully and the colors are vibrant, but can be toned down with a waterbrush. I have a set of 24 and ordered from Blick 6 colors to complete the set with more earth tones.

Wonderful bargain
27 January 2021

I am so excited that I can buy individual pens through DickBlick:-). I had the small set of these brush markers and didn't want to buy the larger set just to get new colors. It would undoubtedly result in duplications and I didn't want that to happen. By determining which additional colors I needed, I was able to purchase them individually and I would have to say that I probably save a little money by completing my collection this way versus purchasing the largest set outright. And knowing that I can always get a replacement pen when needed, is quite refreshing. Thank you so much for carrying the full range of individual pens:-)
