This is my 'goto' shoe for rough running and approach. The other Helios is great for light trail running but not as sturdy of sticky. I also have the Ultra Raptor which is more hiking that running/approach.

Awesome but specific trail running shoes

I have both the Helios and the SR models. Both have great traction and sock like comfort makes them both awesome shoes. Personally I find the Helios to be one of the best trail running shoes I've owned. It's a great shoe for quick runs and up to 50k.The Helios, has a 4 mm drop and is a higher volume shoe. The toe box has plenty of room and is a sure footed climber. Whereas the Helios SR is a 2mm drop and low volume racing shoe. The toe box is tighter - not uncomfortably so, but it is noticeable. Also unlike the Helios, the SR has a rock plate and uses a mix of black tacky sole and a hard yellow heel that can take a heck of a beating.Running steep inclines and extremely rocky terrain, is where the SR shines. I am running several seconds faster per mile with less effort - La Sportiva says on their website the SR model is for "sky running" and the Helios is for "mountain running". Now I know why.The SR also uses different, more abrasive resistant material around the ankle and high impact areas leading up to each side of the toe cap. In addition the tongue offers a fair bit of padding using the same abrasive material. The biggest thing I love about the SR model, which I hope the Helios will take on are the laces and eyelets used. With the Helios I found it hard to get the right amount of tension across my mid-foot without really cranking on the laces which aren't the best. Because of having to crank down on the laces, my ankle starts to bother me on longer runs. The SR laces are perfect - flat like that once tied, don't come undone or loose its tension. It's easy to get the right amount of tension across the mid-foot without having to crank on the laces. With that said the Helios is a fantastic door to trail shoe and beyond whereas the SR is really for technical trails only - it is not for fire roads or anything paved or groomed.Don't get me wrong, the SR is fantastic but the Helios is tad bit more comfortable, and can be used for a variety of terrains. If I had to choose between the two I would take the Helios over the SR, as it can be used for wider variety of running,If I could only have one of the two I'd pick the regular Helios. Luckily I am able to have both.

These shoes fit like a glove and are the most comfortable trail runners I've ever had, over all types of terrain.Like another reviewer I find they really shine on steep or rocky terrain. The sole sticks to rock really well and makes me feel very confident in moving quickly over rough ground. They are also very light; they feel like a natural extension of my feet.On trail they almost give a bounce and I also found I was running marginally faster with them than my previous shoes. This was my first really low drop shoe as well and I will never go back - it is just so comfortable. I never had sore feet in all my training runs or after racing.Again, like another reviewer I love the lacing system. It is possible to adjust each section of laces and they rarely come ... MoreThese shoes fit like a glove and are the most comfortable trail runners I've ever had, over all types of terrain.Like another reviewer I find they really shine on steep or rocky terrain. It is possible to adjust each section of laces and they rarely come untied, even when not double-knotted. Because there is no metal in the lower eyelets, the laces are also still in fantastic shape considering how much I've used them. The kicker: I can't find these anywhere in Canada anymore. Please, MEC, bring these back and fill the gap in your line-up for a minimal, low-drop technical shoe.

Fantastic shoe for going fast, but with a flaw...
3 May 2017

Bought these shoes as my "fast" trail shoes for the mountains and trails and used it for my first official trail race which was a 5K with 1600' feet of climbing the first 2 miles on hard packed Socal trails and the last 1.1 miles were fast, technical descending with a lot switchbacks. Overall, it's almost as light as a road flat (7.7 ozs size 9, a little over 8 ozs for my size 11), low stack height and heel drop (2mm), comfortable and surprisingly cushioned shoe with great traction/grip on the outsole. The biggest issues I had with it after 45-50 miles of running in it is that it's narrow and a little bit too snug for my liking on the toe box and forefoot area. I think if it was a little bit wider in those areas (or width options at least), hands down 5/5 shoe for ... MoreBought these shoes as my "fast" trail shoes for the mountains and trails and used it for my first official trail race which was a 5K with 1600' feet of climbing the first 2 miles on hard packed Socal trails and the last 1.1 miles were fast, technical descending with a lot switchbacks. If you're looking for a shoe to add to your rotation for your fast days on the trails that'll do well on any type of terrain, this is it as long as it fits your foot.

Great Shoe
13 August 2015

I don't use these as a trail running shoe but I'm sure they would be great trail runner.I am a whitewater canoe guide in Northern Ontario. I bought these this spring and LOVE them! They have held up well on 3 10 day trips with lots of time spent in the water swimming, and walking on rocks, as well as over about 20 total KM of portaging through some deep muddy terrain. There is an exceptionally small amount of visible wear thus far and the comfort and performance has been fantastic. The soles provide excellent grip on wet and slippery rocks (good for trail running) as well as on damp and wet ground. I've had these shoes on with thin socks, thick socks, waterproof over socks and liner socks, and they have been extremely comfortable the entire time. Great shoe
2 July 2016

Only had these a few weeks. Very light. Lots of cushioning. The neutral aft to fore tilt is good for orthotics with a heel wedge on them. The shoes are a tad shallow in the heel region, but that is likely due to my orthotics. The sole has amazing grip and a supple, but supportive cushion. These are definitely a softer ride than the La Sportiva Bushido model. The rubber foam in the tongue creates a snug and secure fit, but it sacrifices some breathability when compared to the Bushido.

Not Right For Me Feet
5 July 2016

Sizing was strange, but got a pair of shoes that fit properly (or so I thought)... The toe box is extremely narrow. This caused me to get blasters, and I stopped wearing them just as my pinkie and ring toe nails were turning purple. This rest of the fit was comfortable. The out rubber over the toe began to peal back also.

Second pair for me
25 March 2016

I am here to get my second pair and decided to write how much I like these shoes. I used these for work on dry days and could wear 16hr with no problems, so when I needed to pick a pair of shoes to make the trip to Nepal with me these came.I hiked 3 different terrains in these and wore river rafting with ease. I couldn't be happier with a product.

not for wet conditions
28 August 2017

Excellent in dry racing conditions, takes bounces well and traction is good even in very vertical rocks. Still, it is very poor on wet rocks. Last weekend I had a race after a pouring rain. Lost my chances as I fell on ground several times. I will continue using this shoe in dry conditions. It is one of the few shoes that is vee light and still well cushioned

stable but soft
6 September 2019

this is the shoe that saved my running. I had issues with plantar fasciitis from running in some zero drop shoes. the lift was just right on the helios SRs. everytime I see them pop up on sale, I buy them. this is my 6th pair. if you want stability with stickatude give these a try. it fits a narrow foot. I do add arch support. keeps me running
