La Sportiva Tarantula Climbing Shoes Blue Orange Black - 47.5

(69 reviews)

The La Sportiva Tarantula climbing shoes are an excellent choice for beginner climbers taking their first steps in the world of climbing and bouldering. These shoes have been carefully designed to meet the needs of novice climbers and offer a variety of features that make them a reliable companion for those looking to build their climbing skills. What characterises Tarantula climbing shoes? First of all, their versatility is remarkable. These shoes are specifically designed to forgive technical mistakes and support the foot muscles while climbing. This is crucial when learning the basics of climbing and gradually venturing onto increasingly challenging routes. The Tarantula is equally suitable for indoor sport climbing and indoor bouldering. Whether you are trying your hand at vertical walls or overhangs, these shoes provide the necessary support. The construction of the Tarantula shoes has a slight asymmetry and pretension, which sets them apart from many other entry-level models. This allows climbers who want to progress quickly and move on to more challenging projects to do so with a degree of comfort and efficiency. The sole is made of special FriXion Black rubber, which is relatively stiff but at the same time provides relief for the feet when climbing vertically. Another advantage of the Tarantula shoes is their fit. They are best suited to medium-width feet and are suitable for different foot shapes, regardless of whether you have Greek, Roman or Egyptian feet. This makes choosing the right size relatively easy and ensures that the shoes fit comfortably and supportively. Overall, the La Sportiva Tarantula climbing shoes are the perfect choice for anyone looking to start climbing or take their skills to the next level. They offer comfort, versatility and durability and are suitable for both short training sessions and longer climbing adventures. With these shoes, you can confidently immerse yourself in the world of climbing and constantly improve.

Awesome beginner shoe!

I bought these as my first pair of climbing shoes, and am definitely happy with my purchase! If you're new at this (or even familiar with climbing shoes), make sure you double check the size you are ordering/that you're ordering the proper size! In my opinion, La sportiva runs pretty true to size, but I order a half size-whole size smaller than I normally wear (so my feet are nice and snug when I'm climbing). I went to my local outdoors store and tried on a like pair of la sportiva's before actually purchasing this product. I would definitely recommend this if you're unsure of the size you wear in climbing shoes! These shoes really have been fantastic though. I bought these shoes for my son and they cracked after three months of climbing once a week. The lady at MEC told that it is normal and refused to change. I understand that cracking on the toes is normal for rock climbing shoes, but three months of once a week climbing is too short of a lifetime. The manufacturer should do a better job at using proper materials and retailer (MEC) should also be more flexible - they are in contact with manufacturers and have the possibility to push this to them.

Extremely fragile. Better options available.

I'm a beginner climber who started climbing 4 months ago and climb v6/5.10+. I only had these pair of shoes for two months and they're worn to the point there they cannot even be resole'd. I've seen several people at my gym with the same tarantulas and they all have issues with the durability of the sole and the binding coming off.I go climbing/Bouldering about 2-3 times a week. My first pair were a pair of scarpa quantics and despite terrible beginner footwork and dragging they only sustained minor wear and were sent in to be resole'd.Climbing shoes seem to be a lot more expensive recently and I would not recommend these if you're thinking of a starter or economic shoe. Go for the higher quality ones.

First Pair of Climbing Shoes
20 October 2020

I bought these a few weeks ago in-store. This is my first pair of climbing shoes. I've been indoor climbing a handful of times and these are WAY better than the rental shoes. I don't love the color, but the price and availability were what I needed. Nice fit even though I have super long toes. I'm way more confident on the walls with these. The staff at Moosejaw Olathe KS were very helpful and offered great advice, steering me in the right direction for sizing and brand. I like the leather uppers instead of synthetic, and so far they don't stink and I've had 0 issues.

First pair of climbing shoes
27 August 2021

I’ve gone climbing in these several times and they’re much better than the rental shoes. They fit my foot shape super well. Other shoes I tried had a toe shape that was too pointed and didn’t fit right because my toes have a more rounded shape. The only small issue is that the heel is slightly too big. Not so much that my heel comes out of the shoe. I likely could benefit from a smaller size but I haven’t gotten used to climbing enough to feel comfortable with that. Even so it’s overall a great shoe and has served me well as a beginner shoe.

Great Price, Fit and Feel
20 June 2021

I'm a newbie when it comes to bouldering so I appreciated the recommendation I received to purchase the La Sportiva Tarantula Shoe as a solid beginner shoe that won't break the bank. It certainly is affordable (especially with Moosejaw's discount) and the shoe feels great. Honestly, as soon as I put on the shoes, I forgot about them because that is how comfy they are and how confident I felt climbing routes with them. If you're looking for a good pair of beginner shoes, check these out.

Great beginner climbing shoe
17 October 2019

I got these a couple weeks into climbing about a month ago. I climb 3 times a week. They're a great balance of comfort and performance for a beginner shoe. I do think that I will be getting some more advanced shoes in the next couple months. I do recommend sizing down. Even though my feet are wide at the toe, I still find that I could fit into a smaller shoe. I bought a 47, which is my street shoe size, but I could definitely fit in a 46.5. Maybe even a 46. With the 47, I find my ability to keep the tip of my toe on very small holds to be somewhat hampered.

Great for ingrown toenail, stick to the wall like glue
3 November 2019

I tried on quite a few models and tested them out on the wall in the store. Once I got the sizing right (street shoe is a men's 9-10, got a 42 in these) I couldn't believe how well I stuck to the tiniest holds and their rigid structure and sticky soles really made it easy to stay on there at any angle. Truly felt like spoderman on the wall. One of the biggest deciding factors though for myself is my right big toe is prone to ingrown toenails (have had surgery on it twice and it's still pretty chronic) and these were the only pair that gave me the comfort that I needed. Velcro can attach at lots of angles to get the right fit. Good arch support, these shoes are lightyears better than the Evolv Defy rentals at the gym.*Newb alert, only been climbing for a month so ... MoreI tried on quite a few models and tested them out on the wall in the store. Horrible life-span
31 March 2020

I bought these shoes four months ago as my first pair of climbing shoes. There are a number of quality issues I would like to bring up. First is the rubber on the toe, I cut through the bottom of the shoe leaving just my toe able to touch those small footholds. The lower strap is fraying and falling apart. The rubber on the side of the shoe also appears to be peeling away. I am worried that after four months of low to moderate use that I will be unable to use these shoes again because I will no longer be able to trust my feet. I really expected a better quality from a company such as La Sportiva and have had good luck with many of their other products. I find it unfortunate that these shoes deteriorated so quickly.

Pretty good beginner shoe
23 March 2024

Pretty solid beginner shoe. Comfortable and the velcro is still in good shape after a year and a half. The toes started showing holes around 6 months in and both have proper holes now. Not the most durable, but I liked them and the price is right.
