It might look rugged but that thin orange rubbery stuff around it doesn't offer enough compression to actually protect anything, and it's just a cheap HDD underneath. I fixed the drive myself and was able to recover all the data and it's still going strong but figured I should get another drive to replace it just in case, and thought the rugged-looking LaCie would do the job, but the first one died after the first ... MoreLike the title says, I've had three of these die on me this summer. The second one did the same. The most recent one didn't even get dropped, I just put my data onto it after bringing it home and ejected it, then the next day it wouldn't load up when I plugged it in. 0 for 3, time to find something else.

I’m pretty clumsy so I drop this thing a ton. The rubber protection works amazing at protecting impact. Works perfectly! Also quite chew resistant as my dog has picked it up a few times while in the field. To him it’s just another rubber toy! Lol I take it everywhere with me. Upload all of my photos onto it every single evening. I’ve uploaded years worth of photos onto it and have not even used 20% of the drive yet.

I really wanted to love this external hard drive. I've seen so many photographers using it so I figured it must be good, and it's made tough to survive bumps and bruises. However, I have had issues with it constantly on my MacBook. It will constantly disconnect and I will get the notification to Eject disk before disconnecting. I have changed my Mac settings to not put hard drives to sleep and the issue still persists. It happened enough to the drive I bought from B&H that the drive wound up failing, so I sent it to Seagate for a replacement and now the problem is even worse with the replacement. So much for putting my Lightroom library on it.Experience: 1 star. When the drive works, it works great and fast, so 2 stars.

[Rewarded Review] DO NOT BUY!!
3 May 2024

Bought a hard drive and noticed a week later it kept randomly disconnecting from my new mac that I bought. Thought maybe it was my computer so I did some research and noticed its a common problem when hard drives start to fail or a faulty cable. Best buys return policy is garbage for being as big of company as they are and they wont accept it back so now im stuck with a 3 week old hard drive that is faulty. Would not recommend shopping with best buy. Seems shady that you have to buy a membership to get 30 day returns, they know what they are doing and its a trash model. Bad business practice

[Rewarded Review] It stopped working out of nowhere
25 March 2024

As a photographer, I would usually store all my edited photos in the external file besides the cloud storage I have. I was exporting a session from this external drive when suddenly it stopped working. It stopped becoming readable by my computer, or any other computer available. For no reason it just stopped working. I didn't drop it (even though website says it resists a 4ft drop) I didn't even move it. Nothing was wrong with the cable or C-Port. I was told by the Geek Squad that something went wrong on the inside of the product and there was nothing they could do to fix it. I then tried reaching LaCie's customer service, and they were really hard to get a hold of. The phone number on their website was busy, their website said we can reach them via live chat ... MoreAs a photographer, I would usually store all my edited photos in the external file besides the cloud storage I have. The phone number on their website was busy, their website said we can reach them via live chat between 7pm Sunday till 7pm Friday. I waited and reached out, they asked me for my serial number and asked if I have a backup. That is all they said. No further communication was had. They ghosted me. The website doesn't provide information regarding warranty service. It will tell you if you are under warranty, but not how to make use of it or instructions on how to proceed. Overall, I do not recommend this product at all. It's a $200 paperweight in my office that just serves as a great reminder of all the files it had that are now gone.

[Rewarded Review] Newer MacbookPro? Buy this!
8 September 2023

If you purchased a 2022 MACBook Pro and need to back it up save yourself the time and headache and just buy this for your Time Machine needs. I tried using my old drive with USB A with an adapter that had a USB C output for my MAC. Time Machine didn't like this no matter what I tried (doubling space on my drive, ensuring it was APFS formatted, etc). I finally read that the type of adapter I was using may have been the issue but instead of buying another type of adapter I just bought this drive. I formatted it once I bought it and Time Machine went to work on it no problem. Great drive, fast backup. Atlantic Store Best Buy staff were very helpful with questions and fast/easy checkout.

[Rewarded Review] Perfect, Portable External HD
14 January 2023

I’ve bought this external HD twice. First for my MacBook Pro, to use with Time Machine. Since it’s used for a laptop, I like the fact that it has a silicone(?) bumper. But the original reason I bought it was because it was USB-C (the little one), which meant I didn’t have to get a USB-B to USB-C converter. I’ve been happily using it for a few years, It travels with the laptop (bumpy rides), and has been a breeze to use.The most recent one I got was for my husband’s MacBook Pro. I discovered that he had NO BACK UP for his laptop (his only computer). So it was a no-brainer to get this external for him. I knew if it was anything complicated, he wouldn’t bother using it. Or, he would continuously ask all sorts of questions (What do I do to use this? (plug it in), Which ... MoreI’ve bought this external HD twice. First for my MacBook Pro, to use with Time Machine. (Yes, remember when you got a shutdown alert and thought you lost everything?).He does now use this external HD, And, he even uses it to transport other files (besides using Time Machine), since the HD has so much memory.

[Rewarded Review] Reliable Storage for Busy Creatives
18 May 2024

As a creative professional who's always on the go, I needed a tough external hard drive. It's perfect for my clumsiness and I've already dropped them several times during my travels. The 5TB capacity is amazing for storing all my huge RED videos, and design files. Plus, the USB-C connection with USB 3.0 adapter makes it easy to transfer files between all my devices. It even works with both Mac and PC! Overall, a great choice for anyone who needs a durable and spacious external hard drive.

[Rewarded Review] Rugged, Reliable, A Little Slow
19 November 2024

I bought this thing after I accidentally dropped a comparable drive on the floor... I guess I wanted a little more protection from my own clumsiness! It's definitely rugged and comes with a great transfer cable. Unfortunately, I wasn't prepared for how slow transfers were going to be. I timed it out to be about 10 seconds per Gigabyte (I have a Macbook Pro, M1 Max). That transfer speed may sound faster than it is, especially if you work with HD video or need the drive for other large-file size backups. I got what I paid for, but if you want to take advantage of your Thunderbolt port or if you're transferring hundreds of gigs at a time, get something faster.

[Rewarded Review] Would Recommend
21 May 2024

I recently started editing long videos and the raw footage was taking up too much space on my desktop. This product has been helpful for storing footage and backing up completed projects. It has a USBC to USBC cable. Compatible with my MacBook Pro. It would have been amazing if I could connect the LaCie to my iPhone as well, but my iPhone has a lightning port, and the converter I bought does not work for transferring information.All-in-all, great product! I would recommend for anyone, with a compatible device, in need of storage.I purchased the product a month ago.
