I just recently decided to dive in the rabbit hole of fountain pens, ending up with this LAMY pen, 2 beginner Pilot fountain pens, and a TWSBI Eco Medium pen and Fine pen.
The TWSBIs are really smooth, but I feel like they both let out way more ink that I'm expecting, and on paper that doesn't normally bleed, they put so much ink out that the ink
bleeds a smidge. The Pilots are nice but not much to speak of, and they clog often. This LAMY pen is by far the best of the lot. It is consistently smooth, and with proper
fountain pen ink it is reliable and hasn't clogged yet. I love how the end is contoured for a comfortable grip, and I like that the cap clicks on and off, as opposed t... Show more

First one I got was probably a faulty from factory or damage during transit but I wanted a replacement and I'm very happy with it! Only complaint for me is the shape of the holding part. If I hold the pen as it intended to be, my holding gets less stable and I don't write as good as I want to. So I hold a little different, one finger on the indent and other on the bump itself. If youre holding your pen in weird way this may not be the best for you but otherwise I definetely recommend you try it!... Show more

I am using Noodler's 54th Massachusetts waterproof ink, and I couldn't be happier with my new setup. I use it for both drawing and writing, and while I still prefer an old-fashioned pen nib and bottle of ink, this setup is a fantastic second and great for traveling.... Show more

A good sharp writer for cheap paper
28 February 2023
I'm extremely new to fountain pens, so I don't have a lot of appropriate paper lying around. As a lefty, and one who wrote with roller balls until recently, I have developed a preference for extra fine pens that dry quickly. Thus, I picked up the extra fine version of this pen to focus on good performance on cheap paper and a writing experience similar to what I was used to. The line is clear and reliable for the most part. It has a nice feedback from the paper, though if you're looking to avoid the feel and sound of scratch on paper that might be a minus for you rather than a plus. Initially it felt oddly light, but I got used to the weight quickly. The strawberry color is attractive. My only semi-negative experience is one that's shared with one or two other pens, ... MoreI'm extremely new to fountain pens, so I don't have a lot of appropriate paper lying around. Initially it felt oddly light, but I got used to the weight quickly. The strawberry color is attractive. My only semi-negative experience is one that's shared with one or two other pens, and thus is likely more to do with the lousy paper I'm using for now. Over the course of a long session, the pen will write progressively drier until I have to take a short break to let the feed recover. I think the paper is probably just sucking the feed dry, because only my wettest pens avoid this issue entirely on this paper.... Show more

First fountain pen

Lamy Safari, blue. It's an okay pen. I bought the fine tip as a beginner pen for my 11-year-old's Waldorf classes. The pen could use grip, especially for a beginner. The nib will leak when not in use. It came with a blue ink cartridge. I bought the Z28 converter and ink sample pack. Those both work well with the Safari. Everything cleans easily. I have noticed some inks write darker until they get flowing again, then write as their true color. This pen needs to be held at a very specific angle in order for ink to flow onto the paper. Not sure if that's true for every fountain pen or not, but it frustrates my child. Also, this pen can unscrew itself too easily while being used. Lamy Safari Fountain Pen Set in White
25 October 2023
This is a really good deal especially with the extra ink cartridges in the various colors.I have a few other Lamy Safari fountain pens and use them for drawing as well as writing -each in a different color and one that has water soluble ink in it instead of waterproof ink.I had requested the white Lamy Safari fountain pen with a fine nib, but what they sentactually has an extra fine nib. So I was surprised when I saw how thin the lines were. Not what I ordered, but I will keep it. That is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Otherwise, a great pen set and a very good value. I think they need to change the description from "fine nib" to "extra fine nib" - which is indicated by ef on the nib itself.... Show more

Quality, Value, and Dependability
22 January 2024
I've been illustrating since I could comfortably hold a pen or pencil. In an effort to find and use a more sustainable product and put less single-use plastic into the environment, I decided that a fountain pen was a good way to go for drawing. Little did I know it would also become my preference for writing as well! I researched quality, beginner-level pens, and the Lamy Safari seemed to dominate the recommendations. After having used it daily for almost a month, I can understand why.It writes almost immediately every single time I pick it up to draw or write. It didn't take long for the triangular shape of the grip to feel very natural and comfortable in my hand. I bought the extra-fine, which is a nice width, but I also like that you can use it upside-down to get an even finer line. Of course, the grip changes when it's upside-down, but it's not bothersome to me.The only thing I didn't care for right out of the box was a sharp edge along the cap. Since I use the pen posted, that sharp edge rubbed in the fleshy part of my hand. I took some fine sandpaper and sanded it down just a smidge to round it off. Since the plastic is the same color throughout, you can't even tell it was sanded, and now, it feels perfect! I highly recommend the Lamy Safari if you're looking for quality, value, and dependability. #sweepstakes... Show more

Safari Fountain Pen Extra Fine / Yellow
19 August 2024
A Lamy Safari is such a good pen, it's hard to justify buying anything more expensive when you're buying a fountain pen. It's a reliable writer, the clip is practical and attaches to shirt or bag pockets without any issues. They're significantly more affordable than more expensive models that are made out of premium resin material (Safaris are made out of the same plastic as Lego). The converter is holds plenty of ink. There's a reason it's considered one of the best entry level pens. They're a great mix of form and function. This is my second Lamy Safari, my first is a bright red. Happy with the purchase.... To Write Again
16 May 2023
I am 80 years of age. I grew up with that fat pencil beginning to print and then practice the now almost lost art of cursive writing. While I did not excel at cursive, I did not do poorly either. Somewhere it fell by the wayside so I won't place the blame with anything or anyone one but myself. Recently a group of guys I associate myself with mentioned that he had a collection of pens, LAMY and others. He asked a question, when is the last time your wrote with a fountain pen? Anyway, it gave me thought, and he mentioned that LAMY makes some fine pens, reasonably priced and I did exactly that, mainly to see if I still could write where you could read it and of course, possibly improve some of those old skills. With email, cell phones, messages etc. there is no writing ... MoreI am 80 years of age. But you never know when it might come in handy. LAMY provides a great entranceway back into writing if you so wish. I am pleased with their basic pen and am about to find out about different nibs just to see what develops. I must add their (LAMY) packaging is unique and well done. Assembly is literally a snap and then you are free to return to the lost world of cursive. Best wishes to you on your journey.... Show more

Wow! Even better than I expected!
13 June 2023
I had read enough about the LAMY Safari to know it was a very nice pen, but the first stroke of pen on paper almost brought tears to my eyes. It was like writing on air. Now, for reference, I own a very high end Mont Blanc and mid-range Sheaffer Targa and a couple of Parker 75s, all of which are beautiful writers. But, as delightful as they all are, I do not recall any of them giving me such a warm and fuzzy feeling on the very first contact with paper. Writing with the Safari is like writing with butter! The feed is great, too. I bought this one with M nib because I have never cared for any fine nibs I have tried, but I find the M so smooth I had to buy a fine just to see how it feels on the Safari. The diameter is a little larger than I expected, about normal for most fountain pens, but they just looked a little slimmer in pictures. Do not get me wrong, I prefer a pretty standard mid-size girth and love the feel of the Safari. This was just an observation. I especially love the clip design. I am retired and long-sleeve t-shirts are pretty much my daily "uniform". With no pocket, I have to clip my pen in the neck of my t-shirt. Some clips are difficult to get clipped on and some, especially Parker's "arrow" clips can be a hassle to get off because the "barbs" on the arrowheads get caught. The nice wide, rounded Safari clip slips right on and off while still maintaining a snug, secure grip. I like the first Safari so much I ordered one of the special addition (from a few years ago) violets plus a few nibs for my daughter who likes fountain pens also and wants to play around with calligraphy. Then I was jealous so I ordered a one of the Mangos from that special edition class so we can swap caps and bodies now and then to have LSU purple and gold pens!... Show more
