The 14 mm Rokinon/Samyang is the best value in this range, but for those of us who don't want to compromise, this is the lens to have in your bag for those special times when no other focal length can give you the creative angle that this lens provides (or when you can't physically back up any further, like in a slot canyon). Plus it's as distortion free as a focal length at this width can get. 5 Star! (The only bummer is that it will require a special filter adapter and 100mm filters for the waterfall hunters out there; that's the price you must pay to set yourself apart though.)... Show more

At f2.8 on the lens my camera reads f0, f4 reads f1, f5.6 reads f2 and so on. This isn't really a problem unless you want to shoot in aperture priority since the camera will be adjusting your shutter speed to shoot at f3 when the lens is really set to f8 so you will need to leave your cameras exposure comp set a stop or two higher to compensate for the short shutter speeds. For me the biggest issue that keeps me from using this lens is the horrible vignetting on photos. I understand a lens this wide is going to have some unavoidable vignetting but even after the lens correction there is a green color cast that is hard to fix and on interior photos that is not something you want.... What a pain. The solution? This lens! -For two reasons...It's so wide that you can rest your elbow against your body while holding your rig. That means you're getting the perfect shot in comfort. It also means, (if you're in the Sony ecosystem), that the camera's internal mics are nice and close. And boy, I cannot say enough good things about Sony's internal mics! Their technology isn't just Best in Class.., it's easily ten years ahead of any competitor. They sound even better than Rode's flagship shotgun camera mounted mics.Anyway.., this lens is small, light, and though it's prime, it's very easy to set a good focus and stay there. That nice, low F-stop allows for some neat-o cinematic blurry background effects and low light situations. And that rectilinear effect..? Shoot, that's cool; something close to engineering magic. I'd love to know how they pulled off that trick! It does make for some weird-looking distortion if your face drifts to the edges of the frame, but being so wide, it's not hard to stay in the sweet spot.Used with a gimbal, this lens makes rooms look like they're in a high budget movie! If you're into real estate, you should definitely consider having one of these in your kit.The build quality on my copy is stellar; tight locking, solid feel, pleasing action on the adjustment rings... -Though I understand there have been some QC issues reported by others, so that may be something to be aware of. Apparently I lucked out.Caveats include a slight darkening/purpling/softness in the corners. This is to be expected, but I took one star off for it, (I can't say the lens is perfect, so 5 stars would be a lie, but it's definitely one of those times where I'd appreciate a website allowing me to divide stars in half. 4.5 stars is what I'd give Laowa. There's also a trick to getting the lens cap on and off; you can't easily pinch and pull like other lens caps, the center clip is too smooth and offers no grip, so your fingers pop off when you squeeze, plus it's all inset, so you can't get at the edges. It took a few tries before I realized there is a trick to it; you use one finger to pop it out instead of two, and when you replace it, just do so in reverse at an angle. Having worked that out, it's a non-issue.Other than those minor points, I really value this lens! I use it regularly. It's one of those purchases I still feel very happy about, even proud of, months later.Good job, Laowa!... Show more

Great lens, but heavy for mirrorless
15 March 2021
I've loved the 12mm f/2.8 zero-d on DSLRs (Nikon F-mount cameras) and this lens does the same job on the Nikon Z-mount. Problem though is that these are manufactured with an extension to fit the Z-mount, making the lens longer and heavier than the ones for the DSLRs/F-mount. So if you're looking for the benefits of a lighter/smaller lens by going the mirrorless route, then this lens may be somewhat disappointing. With that said, like the other 12mm lenses for DSLR mounts, it does a great job with almost no barrel distortion, keeping verticals pretty much vertical. It does have a lot of vignetting, typical of these super wide lenses, and corners are fairly soft. For real estate video work though this does a great job. Mind-breakingly Wide!

This is my first ultra-wide angle lens, and in the month since I bought it I've really been enjoying it!With how wide it is, virtually no distortion, and the close focusing distance, makes it so you pretty much have to reprogram your brain when framing shots. Numerous times I would get ready to take a shot, only to realize I had to get A LOT closer to whatever my subject was.The small form factor is also a huge plus, and the main reason I was drawn to it.Anything outside of close focusing distances, you can leave the lens set to infinity and even wide open everything will be in perfect focus. There are a few cons though:My copy is a little stiff when attaching and reattaching it to the camera body. I'm not sure if its a universal issue, but its worth noting. The vignetting is a known fault, but I've come to accept it as just a compromise Venus Optics had to make. Its not too difficult to adjust for when processing images. There is also the problem with filters. While its marketed that the Laowa 9mm can accept lens filters, there is a caveat that comes with it. With such a wide focal length, screwing on filters will introduce heavy vignetting in the far corners of your image. You might be able to get around this by using a step-up ring and substantially larger filters, but I have yet to test this.Regardless of its faults, I would highly recommend having this lens on hand. Its small, sharp, handy, and crazy wide.... Show more

Not in focus at infinity
21 October 2018
Now onto my second copy, at best it's slightly better. But the issue is overall the same. Its not possible to focus this lens to infinity. With this second sample the center appears sharper than the first copy, yet the focus falls off quickly and not far from center at all. And again, the closest I can get to infinity is hitting the stop. If the stop could be adjusted, then maybe just enough extra adjustment could be made.Venus Optics was of little help, basically saying I dont know how to focus a lens and not to go by the infinity icon. Duh! Of course they say the center is sharp and the focus issues is because of the aperture. Meaning that while it's an ƒ2.8 lens wide open, it should not be used as such. Duh! Of course they say the center is sharp and the focus issues is because of the aperture. Meaning that while it's an ƒ2.8 lens wide open, it should not be used as such. True, most lenses are soft wide open. But they are still able to give a fairly even field of focus less edges/corners. The focus fall off with this lens is so bad that I have to go to at least ƒ8. Then its "better" but certainly will not help with astro work. My Tokina 16-28 has no issue with focusing to infinity, for example, but the corners are much, much softer than the Venus. If you are using this lens for real-estate, close-ups and even wide-macro, then all of the above will not matter and in fact the lens performs incredibly well. This is why, for me, it is such a disappointment. Its so dang good at so much with minimal CA and great looking corners. It just fails in one major area where I need it to perform well.Returning this second copy and I will not try a third. Based on what I have read on forums, I am not alone with this issues. The suspicion is this is a mount issue for Nikon bodies. It must be out of spec and why other bodies seem to not have this issue.... Show more

I love this lens - every bit as good as the reviews that sold me on it.Having been reliant on autofocus for so long, it's taken a little practice to get fully comfortable with the fully manual nature of this lens - you have to look at the aperture ring to set or verify your f-stop and rely on eyeballing or camera's "focus peaking" feature - after a little practice, it's pretty second nature.Solid build, sure feeling when turning the focus or aperture rings. I love having 2x macro - lets me get as up close and personal as one should even get, shooting hand-held in the field. Images are sharp, color is gorgeous, and extremely low if any C.A., nice bokeh. I purchased this lens to be the wide end of a prime kit along with the Olympus 17, 25, and Panasonic 42.5. Compared to my m.Zuiko 9-18mm f/4-5.6, The Laowa has equivalent center sharpness, better corner IQ, and less distortion. Best corner-to-corner sharpness is at f /5.6 or f/8.0. Critical focusing needs to be done wide open, otherwise the depth of field is so great, it's difficult to tell if you've achieved the best focus. The focusing ring travels a bit past infinity on my copy. The small size of the lens is great for carrying, but you may need to get used to the small aperture and focusing rings. WIDE NON-AUTO w/o the Fish Eye
4 March 2022
Great lens if you need a really wide APS-C Sony E-Mount lens without any fisheye distortion. Filters go on easy as well. The only downside is that NONE of the automatic features usually associated with a lens work with this one - NO AUTOFOCUS & NO AUTOEXPOSURE. You even have to set your camera to Release w/o lens to simulate operating the camera with no lens. If you rely on AF & AE, you may want to pass on this. However, focus can be set to Infinity since this is a very wide fixed lens. You'll just have to be mindful of what f-stop you have set. Also consider that this may be the widest APS-C E-mount lens available (I could not find anything wider.)... Show more
