Using this for aquatic life photography amd even with the challenges that a manual lense brings with a constantly swimming/moving subject, I am able to get stunning, high detail photos with beautiful bokeh. While im sure it adds weight, i personally love that the housing is metal and the aperature ring has tactile feedback too. Chef's kiss! I would, in a heartbeat, recommend this to anybody wanting to do macro photography.

An amazing lens for the money

Just worked with it a bit but found out immediately that any, and I mean any, dust on the sensor will show on the image so beware. Also, you need at least a monopod but other than that it exceeds my expectations. Plant photos were taken indoors under artificial light with a monopod and a Sony AR7II. No touch up, just some cropping and shrinkage of the image. Group of flowers about 1 to 1, single flower 2 to 1.

Great lens !

I received mine with the box still plastic wrapped. This is how new lenses should come as.This is a great lens! It's sharp even at f2.8. The focusing ring is smooth. I wish it had at least contacts to tell the camera what aperture it's at.This 90mm is a lot better than the 100mm version. It's shorter and lighter, and the focusing ring has more throw and smoother.

Great lens for beginners and more experienced macro photographers
2 May 2023

The Laowa 90mm is a fantastic macro lens, offering sharp glass, smooth bokeh, and a lot of flexibility depending on your shooting style. My standard use of this lens is to take photos of insects and spiders, but it is also a great lens for flower photography if that is what you like. This lens separates itself from the Laowa RF 85mm f/5.6 and Laowa 100mm RF 100mm f/2.8 in a couple ways, which I'll try to explain. All three lenses have a max magnification of 2x, but only the 90mm and 100mm have the faster f/2.8. This gives you a lot of control on subject isolation, and being able to have that dreamy bokeh behind your subject when shooting wide open. This gives you a lot of control on subject isolation, and being able to have that dreamy bokeh behind your subject when shooting wide open. One difference from the 100mm is that the 90mm was designed from the ground up for mirrorless, whereas the 100mm was an adapted design from its previous DSLR version. This means that the 90mm is more compact than the 100mm, but has a larger grip and feel to it. You can't go wrong with the 100mm, but the 90mm is just a refined version of it.When comparing the 85mm to the 90mm, the slower f/5.6 of the 85mm will be limiting when trying to isolate a subject. The 85mm is much, much, much smaller, and weighs considerably less which is great for field work. The only thing I detested on the 85mm was the location of the aperture ring, which was at the front of the lens. The 90mm has the aperture control ring at the base of the lens near the mount. Why is this important? When you attach a diffuser, the aperture control ring of the 85mm is hard to access, and will be covered. If you're not adding a diffuser, this detail may not be such a big deal, but it made a world of difference for me when I switched to the 90mm.So what is not to like about the 90mm? I can only think of one thing, which is that the aperture is manual. Even with the exposure compensation of the EVF on my R5, the viewfinder can still be dark or struggle to refresh quickly at f/11 and direct light on a subject at 2x. This is one thing the older EF-mount 100mm had right, which was electronic aperture control, allowing you to have a bright and fast-refreshing viewfinder at pretty much any magnification or aperture value. I still think this lens is a 5/5, as the price is incredible for the performance you get. With those couple differences and gripe out of the way, I think the 90mm is a perfect lens for the user who wants the most control possible, fast glass, and a lens made from the ground up for mirrorless. The price to performance blows every other manufacturer out of the water, and the features are exactly what you need and nothing more. It's pretty much perfect.

Incredibly Sharp and fun.

The lens is heftier than I anticipated, but is still within reason. I imagine it is similar to the much more expensive Sony 90mm macro. Video after video of comparisons, the Laowa holds a bright candle to the Sony.Admittedly I haven't personally experienced the comparison, but I am more than pleased with this lens. I've been practicing some time with manual focusing and have been able to capture some really cool shots. The 2x magnification shows some incredible detail if you can get the light in the shot.My only concern is when going all the way to the 2x magnification, the internal element sounds like its tapping against the front element. Outside of that, couldn't be happier.

My first macro. So far so good.
23 April 2023

Have only been using it for the past few days on my Sony A7RIV but so far I'm impressed! Build quality is fantastic - definitely feels more high-end than what its pricetag would suggest. I should note that this is my first macro lens and it's been quite a while since I've had to manually focus so I'm still learning best practices/techniques. However, I spent some time taking it for a spin on some coins. You definitely need a lot of light if you're stopping down to f22 which evidently seems to be the only aperture usable on small objects if you wanna get everything in frame nice and sharp. I'm looking forward to capturing some colorful critters :)

Perfect at this budget range.

PROS: Beautiful sharp lens. I have been using it the last few weeks and I am really Impressed by the quality. Focus ring is very large and moves very smooth. Feels like its made out of all metal (except for plastic hood). If you don't mind a manual lens and want to pay 1/3 the price of an auto equivalent I would highly recommend this lens.CONS: I shoot on a Panasonic Lumix S5 and noticed just a bit of vignette around the corners but well within correctable range. This lens does not have IBIS and I would not recommend handheld macro without sensor stabilization.

Sharp...quality build...dark?

Quite sharp, standard macro focus breathing, possibly a bit higher Tstop than some.Perhaps and unfair comparison to Sony's mainline/everyday 85mm and 28mm offerings at 1.8 and 2.0, respectively, but as with the 15mm f2, I'm noticing a substantial darkening with the 90mm f2.8 over that I get at the same fstop on either the above Sony offerings, and certainly the 40mm and 55mm Zeiss and Zeiss adjacent offerings. That said, for well lit or daylight, the sharpness of this lens is amazing, especially for the price. Just don't expect to be using this lens inside much.

The macro Lens that you need!
23 September 2022

This is my first true macro lens. The details that come out of this lens is awesome. The size and weight make this very manageable. The only CON I have is the focus ring length is 85% of the overall length. (Also the aperture ring). Meaning, when you go to attach the lens to the bottom, you'll most likely be twisting the focus ring under force; and same goes for remove it. Make sure to grip the lens on the top, that's all you can grip really.Otherwise, get this!!

I could not be happier with this lens. It is extremely sharp. Well built, with very smooth focus ring, perfect amount of resistance, like butter. I chose this over the Canon RF 100mm macro (which I have experience using) for several reasons: 1) much greater magnification (I like fairly extreme macro) 2) the price 3) I decided I don't need autofocus -- for my macro subjects, I am nearly always unhappy with what AF decides to focus on, and prefer to manage that myself -- on a flower, on moss, on an insect, AF is highly unlikely to identify the focal plane I think is ideal, so I would end up just switching to manual anyway. I also often use a focusing rail, which eliminates any need for AF. My test photos with this lens are sharper than ones I got with Canon 100mm, and ... MoreI could not be happier with this lens.
