Optical design is 8 elements in 6 groups with an 8 bladed aperture offers superb image reproduction and image detail. Optimized for macro shooting between 2.5X - 5X life size and specially designed with an extended working distance (45mm at 2.5x & 40mm at 2x)and smaller lens barrel. Photographing snowflakes became an obsession. But 2-5 times magnification appeared relegated to the Canon macro crowd. Until now....... TheVenus Optics Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5X Ultra Macro Lens for Nikon Z, provided the magnification muscle to get the job done, without going through McGyver gyrations to increase Snowflake size. The photographs came out crystal clear and tac sharp.

I bought this lens to use it with my Nikon Z6. The lens is fascinating, it produces unbelievable pictures. I ordered and B&H as always delivered on the next day (B&H is the best in this business!!). I am an amateur photographer and I love macro but, regular macro was not enough and I wanted this lens so I can see the minimal details and guess what, it produces amazing images and really takes you to a different world. It may take a few until you get use to it but once you get it the lens works great. The best aperture is 5.6 and if you don't have great light you needs a speed-light (I think to produce great pics you need this anyways). Anyway, I would but this lens again anytime.100% recommended if you are a big macro fan.

This is THE lens I've been looking for.Right out of the box, it's clear that the build will stand the test of time. The magnification control is a twist and is firm so it will hold its position without any surprises while in use.The narrow barrel is a bonus as you can track and see very well, exactly what you're trying to focus on.I find the clarity to be superb, particularly at f8. Since I'm shooting moving/live subjects, I need f8 or deeper for that depth of field. The samples I'll post are at f8 so you can see what a thin depth of field that produces.Matched up perfectly with my Z-Body and there is no play in the mount. No jiggle, no movement, and that's critical if you go to a focus stack series.Considering what this lens will do for my portfolio and insect ... If there was a better lens, I'd own it. I also have the Laowa 100mm F2.8 CA-Dreamer Macro 2X 067mm and that's going to remain parked on the shelf now that this 25mm is here.Would I recommend it? Without hesitation.

First, let me begin by saying that I am a published photographer who sells stock images. Second, this should not be considered a recommendation as I have only been shooting with this lens for two weeks, but I will share with you what I have learned so far. I have found the most challenging aspect of this lens to be an EXTREMELY HARD TO TURN magnification (focusing) ring, which makes using this lens without a focus rail extremely tricky...but not impossible. As expected lack of light in the viewfinder is an issue with this lens, and the greater the magnification the less light. When composing the shot use f 2.8 to take advantage of the most available light, then click to f 8 or higher to shoot your image utilizing better depth of field. A good flash system with this ... As expected lack of light in the viewfinder is an issue with this lens, and the greater the magnification the less light. When composing the shot use f 2.8 to take advantage of the most available light, then click to f 8 or higher to shoot your image utilizing better depth of field. A good flash system with this lens is a necessity for me. Use a flashlight or focus light to help illuminate the subject while composing the shot. As you may have already guessed, this lens would be very limiting when trying to shoot live subjects in the field. The build quality of the Laowa is like that of a Sherman tank. Even the lens cap is metal and screws on...just make sure you align the two red marks or it will not click secure. The image quality of this lens is superb. My attached photo of the eyes of a tiny Holocephala Robber Fly shows what this lens is capable of. I actually added a set of Vello 49 mm metal extension tubes to the lens in this case, because this insect measures a mere 2 mm across both eyes! If you shoot with a full frame camera you will need to add a set of these very sturdy and inexpensive tubes to allow you to fill most of the frame with very tiny insects, because even 5x magnification will not be enough. I shot this image in studio WITHOUT a focus rail with my Canon EOS 6D affixed to a table. I utilized my Yongnuo flash system, two on either side and one above the subject. When focusing with the lens focus ring for a stacked image, the ring must be BARELY turned with each shot requiring either superb nearsighted vision or a magnifying glass to see the smallest movement, hence the difficulty of using this lens' stiff focusing ring for a focus stacked image. The attached image is a ten image stack that I produced with a good focus stacking software. So far I have used this lens to produce five exceptional images and I have high hopes for the Laowa 25mm in the future.
I've been using the Sony 90mm macro for a couple years, paired with a Sony A7riii and have loved every minute with it. But I wanted something for super macro photos. So I paired the Laowa 25mm with a Wemacro rail (for stacking) and the results are astounding. The lens is ridiculously sharp from center to edge. The lack of manual focus is off-putting, and no IBIS makes it impossible for me to use when not on a tripod or rail. But those are minor gripes in my situation. If you love macro and can work around the challenge of this lens, I would highly recommend it!
If you're into high magnification photography, you can't go wrong with Laowa. This lens is built very well and has outstanding image quality. Being able to go beyond 1:1 magnification is a game changer for shooting everything from insects to leaves to moss. I used this almost exclusively handheld with a homemade flash diffuser setup and its small size is a definite plus in that regard. I found that f/4 produced the sharpest results so that's what I shot with all the time. The barrel is very solid and rotates firmly, which I like - it's not going to shift or slide around accidentally, even when fully extended at 5x. The only issue is the lens cap. It's a screw-on cap but only it only goes about half a turn and there is no lock or snap at the end so it falls off ... I actually no longer own this lens since I decided having only one macro lens with a minimum of 2.5x was sometimes limiting me when shooting subjects like flowers or larger insects and spiders and I wanted to have more macro flexibility. I have since replaced the 25mm with the Laowa 60mm, but I cannot recommend enough the Laowa 25mm for heavy duty macro shooting. A fraction of the price of the utterly massive Canon MP-E 65mm and it has top-notch sharpness and quality. Once you've gotten the hang of high magnification shooting, this will probably be one of the most fun lenses you own.
First off, let me say, I LOVE this lens. That being said, it is not a beginners lens and is very difficult to use. This lens requires a lot of light, or a tripod and has a very narrow focus depth, but when mastered, will give you a whole new vantage point of the world. It is a very sturdy metal build and a smooth feeling zoom function. Nothing on this lens feels cheap. It?s simple construction makes it easy to focus on the more difficult parts of using this lens. (Pun intended) The working distance is a little bit closer than I had hoped making it a little hard to capture certain subjects that are easily scared. Shooting handheld almost for certain will require a flash of some type. This lens is one of the most difficult to use lenses I own, but also a favorite. For ... This lens is highly specialized and overkill for 99% of shots. If the subject to wider than 3/4" or about 2mm, it won't fit in frame. You'll need a very steady tripod and a ton of lighting especially at 5x.If that works for you, this lens is a lot of fun and you can get some really unique pictures. It is a little tricky to use because it doesn't communicate with your camera.I found it easiest to:1) Use a constant light on the subject (flashlight).2) Set the aperture ring at 2.8 so you can see the subject through the viewfinder.3) Find your focal point.4) Lock the camera into position.5) Carefully re-set the aperture ring to desired amount 2.8-22.6) Adjust the camera shutter speed for exposure (via app, remote, or cam ranger). For perspective... using a Nikon ... Ulta-Macro for sure!
I ordered this lens two weeks ago and have only had the opportunity to use it on my WeMacro stepper-motor-driven rail in my studio. I paired the lens up with a Fujifilm X-E3 because the lens will eventually used for field work and the pairing resulted in the lightest solution for both hand-held and tripod supported shooting scenarios. The sweet spot for this lens appears to be f/4. I see some diffraction begin to appear as the lens is progressively stopped down but it can be corrected in post processing.I tried shooting a few bugs hand-held in the garden. Im using a camera neck strap around my neck and under my right arm to create rifle-sling-like tension and moving the camera lens combination by moving my body in and out. Im currently lighting the scenes with a Godox TT-350F with a Vello softbox hand held with my left hand. I use a similar approach when shooting with the Canon MP-E 65mm with Fringer adapter and a Fujifilm X-H1 or X-T2 body. I have the base of a small polyethylene drinking cup slipped over the tip of the lens as a diffuser. The cup is translucent and I increase diffusion with a sheet of vellum inserted and wrapped around the interior of the cut. The cup falls off frequently while moving around because there is not much gripping surface available since the diaphram dial is close to the end of the lens. Venus or a third party needs to release a lens bayonet to female threaded adapter to allow folks to build their own diffusion accessories for use with the lens. The optional mounting ring for this lens looked flimsy so I did not order one. In any case, its really not necessary because the lens weight is reasonably light. I guess some users might want to use the optional mounting ring as a means of mounting their own diffuser solution for the lens.As I said earlier, I really have not had the chance to use the lens in the field and will have to return later for an update.
This is a well built macro lens that you will either love or hate. If you have used or have a good understanding of macro photography you will be fine. However, if you are new to macro (particularly such an extreme macro) you will need some patience & practice. That said, the rewards will be worth it. This is really less of a camera lens so much as it's more of a microscope for your camera. It is a one trick pony. You can not use it for anything else. It is built like a tank, a little larger than I expected from the photos (but still not big) and very sharp. The biggest trick as others have mentioned is having enough light to work with. Laowa does sell a dedicated ring LED light for this lens that attaches to the front much like a lens hood would. It requires a separate power source (a portable phone charging bank with a USB output works perfect) but it really does help a ton. In fact, I really think Laowa should have included the light with it. Only problem is finding the dedicated ring light (part number VE25LED). As far as I can see, B&H does not sell it. The only place I was able to find one was on a particular website we all know that is named after a rainforest :-) And even there they are in short supply. For what this lens costs, it is well worth the price as long as you know the challenges of such close-up photography.
