Laphroaig Select Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

(606 reviews)

The Laphroaig Select is not dominated by powerful peat notes, but surprises with a mild sweetness of vanilla, ripe fruit and marzipan. Laphroaig is Gaelic and means the beautiful lowland by the broad bay. And that's where the distillery is, on a small, natural bay on the rough Atlantic. It was founded in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alex Johnston and soon became world famous. The distillery remained family-owned until 1954, when Bessie Williamson took over Laphroaig after the death of Ian Hunter, becoming the first female distillery owner. What is special about Laphroaig is the perfect interplay of the island's unique, natural influences, the hand-cut peat and the skill of the master blender. So all qualities show a very own, complex character, which is described in the distillery itself as very peaty and smoky and with an aftertaste of sea and hints of sweetness. Because of its exceptional quality and uniqueness, Laphroaig was chosen Purveyor to the Welsh Court in 1994. Since then, every label has adorned the majestic Welsh crest.

Islay whiskeys are quite a step apart from standard highland malts, Irish or bourbon. The medicinal phenol taste is definitely an acquired one. Brands like Ardbeg and Lagavulin took a long time for me to learn to enjoy and whilst I do like them now I prefer lower peat content whiskeys such as Talisker for regular sipping. This distillers select sits quite nicely between the two ends and has a rounded almost soft flavour. The TCP like smell and flavour is still there but much less prominent. Compared to the 10 year which is quite punchy this is definitely an easier sipper as a digestif after dinner for example. If you have shied away from Islay malts then give this one a try - it’s a nice gateway dram. This whiskey is unlike those single malts I have normally enjoyed, but as a free sample, it was very worth the try. This is definitely a darker and more heavily smoked/peaty whiskey than my normal purchases but this makes for a very enjoyable and unique evening tipple. It is a standard looking Laphroaig bottle so will always look good on the shelf. It came with a free lifetime lease on a 1'x1' plot of Laphroaig land (with a free dram if you visit it) - a nice little touch.!!It is one that I would buy.

I was sent this product as part of a free sample program, and was delighted that arrived in time for Burns night (tonight) when I'm trying it for the first time.I've had Islay single malts before, and so was expecting peaty flavours, but this was much less harsh then previous brands. The peat is there, and remains on the palette for the whole tasting, but is more earthy and less smoky than others I've tried. The immediate peat taste is accompanied by citrusy lemon and orange notes at the star which then mellow into chocolatey, almost mint tones towards the end until just the taste of the peat remains. It's a smooth, warming dram, packed with flavour and doesn't disappoint. Having definitely been overpowered by strong smoky peat flavours before, this one has ... MoreI was sent this product as part of a free sample program, and was delighted that arrived in time for Burns night (tonight) when I'm trying it for the first time.I've had Islay single malts before, and so was expecting peaty flavours, but this was much less harsh then previous brands. Excellent Single Malt
11 February 2021

I was extremely pleased to receive a bottle of Laphroaig Select from BzzAgent as a free sample. Laphroaig are one of my favourite Whisky distilleries. I love their signature flavour and smoky aftertaste, and their Select whisky is everything you want from a Single Malt. It’s smooth and warming, with a deep peaty flavour and a wonderful aftertaste of woodsmoke, it’s a bit like drinking a bonfire in the most pleasant sense. If you’ve never tried any of Laphroaig’s whiskies then I highly recommend trying the Select, and if you’re already familiar with their whisky, then you will love this.

Great balanced whiskey at a good price
8 March 2021

I received a free bottle of this select single malt whisky to sample and review.I'm open to all styles of whisky, rich, light, smoky, fruity, there's room for all, it's all in the balance. Never been a huge fan of Laphroaig's medicinal punch but this expression dials it back just right for me. It's still there but it's subtle and doesn't dominate. Along with the peat there's lots more going on but it's all beautifully balanced in a light (but not wishy washy), bright and very high quality whisky. Laphroaig Light is right, but that's not a denigration by any means.

One of the best whiskies
5 March 2021

I received a free sample of this which was wonderful as Laphroaig is already one of my favourite whiskies and I hadn’t tried this expression yet. It is wonderful and I’m very much looking forward to buying more! It’s a smooth taste, not anywhere near as peaty as an Ardbeg or Octomore but you’re definitely still on Islay. If you normally drink Speyside then this may be a bit too full on, but as an introduction to Islay this is a good place to start. The aroma is peaty, the taste has a malty note after the initial peat hit which lingers and a couple of drops of water really open up taste up and this helps with the Laphroaig Select. My wife always says this is a winter whisky, a warming one to wrap up with in front of the fire. Peaty and delicious
31 January 2021

I received this as a free bottle from bzzagent, and am delighted I got to try it. I enjoy a smoky peaty whisky like Talisker, and I have always wanted to give laphroaig a go. This one is delicious and has just the right intensity of peatyiness for me. It goes down nicely with a lovely warmth and a nice smooth smoky aftertaste. It's a fair price to pay for this good quality whisky. Would recommend the laphroaig select. It seems a good introduction to laphroaig and peaty whisky. Next I'll be trying the laphroaig 10 year old. Cheers.

Really distinctive scotch

Recently I’ve been trying out a new Laphroaig Islay Select Single Malt Whisky, that I got to sample for free. So, I thought I’d gather my thoughts and let y’all know what it’s like. So typically I go for Irish whiskeys (notice the “e”… fun fact, Irish whiskey has an “e” and Scotch doesn’t), but I’m an equal opportunities drinker, so thought I’d give it a go.Let’s talk about packaging. It’s nice and gives the air of a quality whisky. I really like the design and it’s something that would draw my eye in a shop. The bottle itself is pretty standard affair and does the job, though I’m not sure I’ve seen whisky in a green bottle before.Let’s get onto the whisky itself. I typically go for mellow whiskeys and a favourite is from a town about 10 miles from here. This is not a mellow whisky. The flavour is strong and unapologetic with notes of peat and wood. I wasn’t expecting it with my first sip, with most Scotch whisky I’ve tried have much the same flavour. It was immediately apparent that this is no ordinary Scotch. It reminded me of an Irish whiskey I once tried that also had a very distinct bouquet and instead of notes of peat, it tasted of actually being distilled in a peat bog!But did I like it? Though it reminded me of that other whiskey, it wasn’t in the least bit offensive. In fact, I did quite like it. It’s not for people who like to use mixers; the distinct flavour is strange when mixed with coke. It’s not for people who like a bland whisky like some other Scotch I’ve tried. It’s for people who want to sit down at the end of long day and savour every sip in front of a roaring fire in the dead of winter. Will it get ya drunk? Yeah, it’s whisky, duh! But if you’re drinking to get drunk, this is not a whisky for you. This is a whisky for slowing down and relaxing. So if that sounds good, try some.

Smoother than expected
3 February 2021

After trying a few single malts thanks to a friend who is a true aficionado, this seems easier on the throat by comparison than many others. A slightly sweet taste that reminded me of honey based whiskeys, it somehow left a smoky aftertaste, not unpleasant but still unexpected.Overall, this single malt (that I received as a free sample through BzzAgent) was pleasing enough to enjoy as a wee snifter amongst friends. I would definitely buy this for mildly special occasions and some of my friends are already fans.As a side note, it had some flavours that I didn't recognise and after some research, I found that it is matured in a variety of barrels, all previously used for other types of spirits.

Stunning Single Malt at the Price
7 February 2021

I was given a bottle of the Laphroaig Select to try as part of a free sample program. This is a wonderful drink on these cold winter evenings. As you might imagine with an Islay it is peaty but I have to say nicely balanced. It is also smoky with a reminder taste of summer barbeques which is a pleasant escape for the mind with it being February 2021 and firmly locked down. Drinking the Laphroaig Select is smooth and easy, warming the mouth with the subtle honey, heather and even rosemary hints. This single malt is the most affordable of the Laphroaig range but to my taste compares well with the 10 year old and certainly represents the distillery well. When my brother in law next can visit I will happily offer him a drink of this to try.
