A Leatherman Tool for Everyone

The tools are all easily accessible from the outside. Magnets hold them in place. There are more than enough usable tools that fold into this unique package. This tool is at home in your kitchen drawer as well as your car or camp. It is a little expensive and perhaps contain 2 tools that you might use very little like the small awl ,but after extensive research I believe the P2 is the best option for most people who need more than 4 tools. The New York Times has given this Leatherman P2 model a very high rating. It is elegant and small for what it brings to the table in convenience and is made in USA.

I have several Leatherman tools including the MUT, Wave, Raptor, Skeletool, and Signal. I bought this as an EDC tool as a nicer, shiny alternative to my Wave. Now I just wish they made this in a flat black finish. The tool is solid. It opens in a revolutionary new way, and every tool can be opened with one hand. You give it a slight twist to break the static friction of the magnet system, and then swing it around similar to a balisong knife, to open the pliers. Every other tool is on the outside. Each one of them can be opened by pressing on base. I am a nail-biter, and have no finger nails, so this is a HUGE plus for me. I opted for the P2 over the P4 because I wanted something lighter. I like the fact that the pocket clip comes with this model, unlike the Wave, where it would be a separate purchase.

I had been carrying the Skeletool on my person every day for almost 5 years when I discovered the P2. I weighed out the pros and cons of moving to a new EDC multi-tool, thinking through the additional tools the P2 would introduce to my carry versus the added weight that it would bring to my pockets. After much debate, I pulled the trigger and ordered one. I’ve been carrying and using this tool daily for a little over a week now, so I can’t speak to the longevity or durability of this tool, but I can speak to its usability, quality, and feature set in my time of using it thus far. The pliers are fantastic and the blade came super sharp. My hope is that they expand this line with even lighter options that give other long-time Skeletool users like me another option to incorporate into their systems. Overall, fantastic tool and I’m looking forward to many years with it by my side!

Free P2 - Nylon Sheath

if you have seen the Leatherman Wingman or Sidekick then you will see the advancement in design from those tools rather than the more functional Wave, Charge and Surge models. The Free P2 seems to use the thinner tools made of the glossier steel of those entry level models but with a price that is far more than the Charge or Surge. The ,ice vaunted magnetic architecture does little to add extra functionality. Instead of being held in with tension, the magnets make the handles stick together with a click. And that’s it.It does have all tools on the outside, which is better for one handed use but the tools are inferior to the Wave’s selection for the most part. Better scissors but the file is half the length and tapered and almost useless.the awl has a small screwdriver at it’s tip, making it blunt and inferior to the one packed into the Surge. The clip comes as part of the P2 but it’s bulkier than the one that attaches to the Wave. It’s the same version as the Sidekick’s clip, I think. The plier head seems to be robust but gripping the plier’s handles is uncomfortable as there are sharp nodules and catches on the handles to release the tools.I found the new locking mechanism for the handle tools OK, once I started pushing my thumbnail against it rather than the pad of my thumb but it’s slightly more awkward than the liner lock and push button release of the Wave. The ruler is just there to add another ‘tool’ to the list of selling features as it’s just over an inch long so not much use to anyone. The Freep2 and P4 are NOT compatible with any of the Leatherman accessories, so no driver adapter or extender or exchanger for screwdriver bits. This lack of purchasable extras is a mystery to me but it’s reflected in the pouch design which has no side pockets and no back pocket like the old style. There is also no horizontal carry option on the pouch, just vertical. The pouch does look nice and is a distinctive grey and a smug fit for the tool with an open stud closure. This is an OK multi tool but it should have been marketed as a mid range upgrade to the Sidekick and Wingman models rather than a new flagship for Leatherman. The marketing may hype the one handed opening but I can do that on my Wave, Charge TTi and my Surge. The internal tools are a little harder but they are better tools and more of them. Also, the Wave, Charge and Surge are all cheaper products with better functionality. If you have one of these, keep your money and don’t buy this. If you like making clicking noises and opening and closing the tool like some poor man’s butterfly knife, then you may like this.

I have several different model Leathermans, Gerbers, and SOG multi tools. Im a Remodeling Contractor and the only one I ever used on a daily basis was my Leatherman Surge. Ive owned it for about 9 years now and its hands down the best of the best! The only problem with the surge is its big and heavy, this new Leatherman is much lighter, sleeker, and even a little smaller than the Wave so its a perfect professional EDC multi tool. This model is missing the saw and serrated blade but if I need those Id just grab my Surge. I really like the magnetic locking feature too. It makes opening and closing with one hand a lot smoother.

In my opinion, this is the best multi tool out there. It is truly designed for quick one handed use. I actually chose this tool over the P4 because it didn’t have 2 separate blades and a saw. I rarely find my cutting needs are specific to a flat or serrated blade, and I have never found the saw very efficient or needed. The P2 had a slimmer profile and it is lighter. It also isn’t a problem that it doesn’t have the Leatherman bit exchanger; I wouldn’t want to be carrying around extra bits all the time. A multi tool is meant for quick jobs, not to replace real tools. The P2 has everything you need. The butterfly opening for the pliers is cool, but fact that you can open the other tools with your thumb is really the selling point. It’s one handed and simple, no searching, no broken fingernails, and can be done with gloves on. There are some sharp points on the handles, but it is not nearly as bad as some reviews complain about; just adjust your grip (or toughen up) The ease of use (the whole point of a multi tool) is unmatched. It’s worth the extra cost.

The Free P2 is the perfect multi tool for most people. I have been using mine for a few weeks and wanted to give my thoughts. There are people that need access to a bit kit, that need a saw on a daily basis, or titanium tools. There is a good reason for tradesmen to gravitate towards the Wave or Charge, that is the best solution for them. That’s not what the Free series tries to be, though. It is like comparing a Macbook to a Thinkpad, both are great. I love the size of the scissors, it’s so useful. The knife is perfect, I don’t need two blades and a saw. I work in an office and need an elegant tool for basic uses, and basic around the house stuff. I love how easy it is to access the tools one handed, it is definitely smooth. It took me a day or so to get used to it but now it’s second nature. I work in an office and I like being prepared for what needs tweaked or fixed, and I’d like to be able to open boxes, but I can’t pull out a pocket knife due to the culture of the office. A nice looking multi tool is different though, and this fits the bill. In this case, a knife is extraneous and a multi tool isn’t. But I don’t need MORE than the basics. Most people don’t. This is the best version of what most people will need.Additionally, this tool is not uncomfortable. My wife agrees with me too. Please don’t listen to the youtubers out there saying it hurts, try it for yourself if your concerned. The tool NEEDS a bit of play where friction based tools would not need the play, due to the magnet mechanism. This is pretty obvious, it doesn’t feel cheap. Anyone who thinks this is a problem needs to go back to 7th grade. Don’t listen to all the youtubers that say this is a bad tool, it isn’t. It just isn’t going to replace the Charge TTi, and I for one am thankful they didn’t try to.

The Free P2 was the first Leatherman Tool I have purchased since I got my Original Leatherman Multi-tool in 1996. I still have it. The Free P2 is awesome; a natural fine evolution of the original multi-tool. I have owned multi-tools from every major manufacture and used them across the globe in tactical, survival and industrial applications, but I always came back to my Leatherman. So, when I was ready to buy a new one, the Free Series was for me. It is everything you would expect from a Leatherman Tool and then some. I don’t like belt sheaths, so this was great for me. I carry my Free P2 in my pocket almost daily. When I put my Free P2 a pack or bag, I can also clip the tool to something to keep it from becoming lost on the bottom.

I got this to replace another Leatherman that'd I keep in my mountain biking pack which I'd lost. I didn't expect much improvement over the last one, but it's completely won me over. I've been carrying this in my pocket now in place of my small pocket knife. It's not much bigger than a normal pocket knife and infintely more useful. In use the tools all feel large, but folded up the whole thing feels very compact. The one-handed operation is really nice and I do take advantage of this. I love the clickiness of how it snaps closed, and how positively engaged the tool locks are. It's all super high quality. The belt clip is nice and in the right spot.I have no idea why the other reviewer complained about the "bumps" on the handles - I never noticed them until I read ... MoreI got this to replace another Leatherman that'd I keep in my mountain biking pack which I'd lost. Maybe if you were stabbing/slamming down with the tips of the pliers they could snag your skin, but in normal use this will never be an issue.

Great multi-tool. After years of getting them as gifts for others, I picked this one up for myself. Working in A/V installations, I found this knife to be the perfect solution to the "oh no" moments that happen when your tools are across site or unavailable. It makes quick work of most low voltage wires, as far as stripping goes. The wire cutters are perfect for most cables/wires I work with on a daily basis. Working on ladders often, the ability to open this tool with one hand while I have a wire in the other hand is essential, and this does the job perfectly. The pocket clip makes it easy to carry, and is quickly replacing my other plier/stripper/cutter tools for site visits.
