As other reviewers have shared, my family is among those customers who have made building and displaying the winter village collection part of their holiday tradition. We put out the set over Thanksgiving break, and our dining room table becomes a Lego building station at which the kids (or adults) are able to stop by and add to the build until it is completed. Then, it goes on display with the previous buildings. We have looked forward to it every year since 2009, which is the year we purchased this set, albeit with a different number. In 2009, my older boys were 10 and 8, eager young participants in all the little Christmas traditions and crafts that had become part of our holidays. Now, as teenagers, they've outgrown most of those things. Building a new addition for our lego winter village was one of the last things we all enjoyed equally. This is my oldest son's next-to-last Christmas to be at home full time, and I am horribly disappointed that we have been denied this part of our family celebrations as this time in our lives when our family is all together draws to a close. We've all missed out on lego sets that we might have wanted had our "younger builders" been older when they were released. And your "younger builders" would likely have purchased a new, non-repeat winter village building had you chosen not to rerelease an old one instead. Providing a product that a large portion of your customer base already owns and therefore will not buy (and offering as an explanation that your designers really thought about it and decided that they essentially don't value our business as much as newer customers?) as opposed to releasing one that the majority of your customer base would eagerly purchase makes no business sense at all.

We get these Christmas sets every year from Sinter Klaas (St Nicholas, who is an important figure in the Netherlands where our dad's from), and this is a great set. I know a lot of people had the old one too, but we didn't so this set was brand new to us.I'll start on the building. It took about an hour and a half to build. The look of the shop is nice and old fashioned, not a super toy shop that looks really modern and flash, but older and simple. The chimney is well built, and looks like real stone, like the chimneys of the other Christmas sets. There is a train and a robot in the window of the shop which looks really nice. The light brick in the toy makers work shop is awesome and makes a nice shadow on the table when you light it through the window. The light brick in the toy makers work shop is awesome and makes a nice shadow on the table when you light it through the window. There are three trees outside the shop which look good too. The toy shop sign is a printed piece (not a sticker!) and adds to the old feel of the building. The wreaths above the windows add a nice touch and make the building look very Christmassy. There is also a tree, which looks very much like a real tree because of the separate builds used to construct it. There are 'lights' around it and a star on top which looks cool too. It comes with a ladder so the minifigures can reach the the top of the tree which is a nice build. There are a couple of presents under the tree too: a teddy, a rocket, a boat, a biplane, a helicopter and a lorry. They are all cool mini builds. There's also a cool little jack in the box which looks good. There's a bench with a lamppost and tree as well, which isn't really necessary and I think just puts the piece count up, but the lamppost is well designed. There's also a snowman, and in a box under the tree there's a carrot for his nose, but it doesn't actually go on his face.Onto the minifigures. There are quite a few:The toy maker- He is wearing a red checked shirt and green overalls. His face has a beige beard and a smile, and his hair is the same as Luke Skywalker episode VI.A man- He has a beard and brown hair and a navy suit on his torso and grey trousers. Two carol singers (man and woman)- The man has a top hat, black suit and red scarf. He has a one sided head that's singing. He has a black brick built carol book. The woman has a double sided head: one singing, one smiling. She has a cape and also has a carol book.Boy with helmet- There's a boy with a helmet that we put on the snowboard. He has a white/green/red torso and green legs. He also has a red scarf.Ski boy- There's another boy with a navy hat, green coat torso and navy legs. We made him be the skiing one.Little girl- There's a girl with bright blonde hair, purple legs and a blue torso with a printed purple scarf.I think that's all the minifigs in this set.I think it's a bit pricey though. 898 pieces for £59.99 is about 15p per piece, but I think for the finished product it's a bit much, especially as some of the pieces are in minibuilds that could probably be sold for 10p each, if not even less.Pros:Looks coolNice variety of minifiguresCan connect up to the last toy shopCool minibuildsCons:Bit priceyYou have to build something to hold down the switch for the light brick if you want it constantly on, but that's not a major issue for me.I'd say try to find the set on a bit of a reduction, but even if it's not put down its still a great set that I recommend you get!

The style of the building does not disappoint, it has charming old world character. When we first seen this building set we bought 2 of them to create one large toy shop with both a front and a back to fit within our Lego train town.During the build since I was going to make one large building from two sets, there where a number of modifications that I had to do.First all the buildings in our Lego train town have a summer time setting. That meant we where not going to build any of the winter time items. Put the clocks on the exterior of the building to make a second floor clock tower. Used the mini figure ski poles as the toy shop sign poles (it gave it a smaller profile that better fit the overall look of the building) Added a light brick to the chimney to light up the toy shop interior, and see all eight of the mini build toys inside on display. The final build of adding two winter toy shop sets together to make on large summer time Toy shop build, turned out awesome. I would recommend everyone get two sets and build one large building. It really has a great look and feel and fits perfectly near other Creator Expert style buildings. The Final build is just stunning. This is one of my favorite creator sets of all time already.

As one of the many Lego fans who missed out on getting these Winter sets the first time round, I am very glad that Lego made the decision to rerelease the Winter Toy Shop & Santas Workshop.I purchased both of them.I had meant to wait until December to build this, but my 5 year old son & I couldn't resist. We had fun building it & my son was able to build most of it himself.I found the roof was not very stable so it was not particularly easy to attach & as he plays with our Lego I have had to put the roof back together again frequently.I will have to mod it to make it less likely to fall off at some point.Unlike most of the Lego we own, this has less play value because of it's fondness for falling apart but it is a charming table ornament which is why I have ... MoreAs one of the many Lego fans who missed out on getting these Winter sets the first time round, I am very glad that Lego made the decision to rerelease the Winter Toy Shop & Santas Workshop.I purchased both of them.I had meant to wait until December to build this, but my 5 year old son & I couldn't resist. We had fun building it & my son was able to build most of it himself.I found the roof was not very stable so it was not particularly easy to attach & as he plays with our Lego I have had to put the roof back together again frequently.I will have to mod it to make it less likely to fall off at some point.Unlike most of the Lego we own, this has less play value because of it's fondness for falling apart but it is a charming table ornament which is why I have rated it as average for play value.I wish that there was an option to buy some more carol singers to go with this set as it only includes 2.I'd happily buy another half a dozen if they were available as the couple look very lonely singing by themselves.Purchasing these sets also immediately sent me searching for large white baseplates, which sadly appear to live out of stock. It would be nice to see them available in the Winter if at no other time as I cannot be the only person who sees the Winter Village sets & wants a white baseplate to build their scene on.I am currently considering buying a second set after seeing quite a few images of how nice it looks built mirrored & because it would double the amount of carol singers.Unlike most of our Lego, this will not stay up all year, but I hope it will become a family tradition to build it together each Christmas.I hope that Lego will seriously consider rereleasing the others in this series, along with the 10173 Christmas Train & the older modular buildings in the future (I would buy all of them except Market Street personally).I hate the fact that some people are selling Lego models that were less than £200 when released for up to £3,000 so I applaud Lego taking back their products & making them available to a new generation of Lego fans. However I would like to see new buildings sold as well & feel there is more than enough room for 2 releases of a winter village themed building (1 old, 1 new) as well as 2 modular buildings each year. (1 old, 1 new)I will be purchasing the Brick Bank when it is released next year, then unless a rereleased or new creator train, modular or Winter Village set comes out there will be very little that is appealing to me apart from PAB & B&P.These are sets I feel are aimed more at adult purchasers, even if they are then shared with family as in my case.
This set is completely adorable and as iconic for the Winter Village as it gets. The toy shop is charming and well equipped with interesting toys. The Christmas tree is sensational and a MUST for the village. The Toy Shop is the perfect scale that I hope Lego aims at for all the future buildings. AND it has the LIGHT BRICK that seemed the standard before the marketplace (which I LOVE) and Santa's Workshop (less wonderful) came along. This set has been marked down harshly because it's a re-issue of one of the earliest sets. I understand the disappointment of people who thought that they had something unique and precious. I understand the disappointment of people who thought that they had something unique and precious. The truth of the matter is I came to the Winter Village late and bought this and the Post Office, myself, at secondary market prices.Nevertheless, it is 1) about as perfect an addition to the village as anyone could for -- I hope Lego goes back to this style of design and use if of the light brick for future WV sets -- and 2) it's a TOY to enhance Christmas. So I'm GLAD anyone who wants one can get one! And I think it has to be evaluated on its own merits which are outstanding. So let's all get some cocoa or some well-spiked eggnog or something and be happy about Christmas and a great Winter Village set well worth repeating. But, seriously, LEGO GROUP, if you want to reissue things (hint: Holiday Train!!!) how about a new set along with the re-issues?!PS The answer to who I purchased it for is "the whole family" Our growing village is an important part of our annual decorations and we ALL love it.
I am a Winter Village collector, I have the entire set. This is such a nice way to slow down during the holiday season and spend some time with our growing family. We look forward to each new piece that comes out every year.I purchased this Winter Toy Shop #10249 online and didn't pay attention too closely to the details, I went with whatever was listed as "new". When the item was delivered (4 days later, so no complaint there) it appeared fairly familiar, so I started searching through my sets, much to my dismay I already had something identical. Back in 2009 They released the Winter Toy Shop under #10199, so the one I received was not a "new" item, it was a rerelease. Back in 2009 They released the Winter Toy Shop under #10199, so the one I received was not a "new" item, it was a rerelease. I'm so disappointed, and I haven't decided if I'm going to return this product, or add it to my collection, perhaps as the back view as a previous review mentioned. Hopefully in the future they will come out with an actual NEW item if they plan on reissuing any of the retired pieces.I also wanted to bring up the price point. The original few pieces were around the $99.00 price point, and in the past few years they have dropped the price point. I understand making it more affordable, however, I did enjoy getting the little free Christmas addon when I hit the $99.00 mark. Perhaps if they released future pieces at a lower price point, maybe they could also create a smaller set, where the two could reach the $99.00 threshold.
I was very glad to see that they had re-released this set. I was almost 9 when the original came out. I was very jealous when my friend got it. I had never gotten that set and wish I would have. This time I took advantage on getting one of the only Winter Village sets I don't have this passed September, almost as soon as it was available for VIPs. However I would consider this the Winter Toy Shop 2.1. A couple pieces have either changed in color or are completely different. For example, The wreaths were not made of 2x2 round studded plates, but instead green "toilet plates" as the pieces have previously been used for toilet seats. I don't think I like nor mind this change, I "tolerate" it. It thrilled me to also see a double printed toy sign instead of a white flag as the original has. There are a few other "minor" changes including some of the roof line, but I will leave you to discover those for yourself. You DON'T notice those changes at all until you take a closer look. Also the addition of a couple extra toys was a plus. I do prefer the original mini figures however. I can say I do still prefer the original Toy Shop than this, but this is still GREAT! Don't back down getting this for the price nor the piece changes. I would have payed upwards of $130 for this just because the original is going for so much on other websites. I really hope LEGO does not keep re releasing every winter village set though. Once in a while isn't bad though. I really hope we get something that is NEW, and as good as this next year. Thank you for your time!
To start this review, I like the Winter Village series very much and look forward very much every year to find out which set it will be.It is indeed the same set as in 2009 and I can understand the disappointment of many people. However I am not disappointed with this wonderfull set. Neither was I disappointed with the other former sets.I write simple stories around the Winter Village combined with other more summer feeling sets. I have a big aquarium with lamps in the top. Instead of filling it with water, I build the winter village inside it. I can have now two competing shops, which can be a very interesting story line inside the whole story. Those sets are very detailled, beautiful and very much fun to build. Also when you have several sets of the Winter Village, you can dream away while building or looking at it. It is nice to see in the dark winter season. When you combine these sets with lights from the Lego technic sets you can give your village an extra touch.Using any robotics Lego set, you can get even further with sounds which add atmosphere to your village. What I also recommend is when the spring is in the country, changing the wintervillage sets, with more spring and summer like sets. Why not make an all seasons theme of your village, meaning your village follows the seasons! There are so many different ideas, imagination is only limited by creativity. If you have the 2009 set, I would put them at opposite sides of your village. It is not uncommon for a (real) village to have two similar shops. But when I can make a suggestion to Lego : next year please a church or a gingerbread house, like mentioned by somebody else before, will be a very very nice touch!!!!! Please give us a church and gingerbread house in the next years. Before making this review I ordered this beautiful set. I look forward to start building it and place this (competing) shop in my stories.Thank you very much Lego! I appreciate your Winter Village sets very much. However I do understand that other people are less happy than I am and if you belong to those disappointed builders, I am sure you are all good enough to make something very different in the Winter Village style.Thank you very much for reading this review.
Winter Toy Shop is a set of 898 pieces. There are eight minifigures included in the set and the amount of stickers this set contains is zero, which I'm very happy about. All the minifigures (five adults and three children) are marvelous; all of them have printed torsos and one female caroler even has a cape and to top that, some printing on her black skirt. Four of the amazing minifigures have two faces, which is, in my opinion, a huge plus and I'd like to thank the design team especially for that. There are two booklets for the two stages of the build. First stage is the assembly of the bench, streetlight, large tree and various toys. Second stage is building the actual toy shop. First stage is the assembly of the bench, streetlight, large tree and various toys. Second stage is building the actual toy shop. The build was on the easy side even for a newbie such as myself, so the buyers expecting an expert level build might be in for a bit of a disappointment. For me, personally, the biggest roof of the toy shop proved to be the most difficult part of the build. I broke some large pieces off the roof when trying to fit it on its hinges because there is only a very limited space to maneuver it and I, apparently, lack the skills needed for the task. I really like the looks of the set, it is (once again) packed with little details that make it look like something out of a fairy tale. My favorite pieces are definitely the light brick and the golden frog. However, there is always room for some improvement: I found that the toymaker's work area is a bit small, so the building could have been maybe two studs wider than it is now. I also found it slightly baffling that a small boy should wear an Octan shirt, which I'd expect to find on an adult, but I suppose he is a big fan of the Octan Racing Team or something like that. The red scarf he's wearing does obscure the logos in the front and at the back. The blue and orange jack-in-the-box is my favorite of the ten toys, but it is a bit wobbly because the 1x1 brick with two knobs which is at the center protrudes slightly from the underside. Also, the two carolers tend to topple over if and when the songbooks are placed in their hands, and finally, there is actually no way to attach the carrot on the face of the "carrot-nosed snowman".A tip for those who don't know what to do with the extra pieces that come with the set: I attached the extra black roller skate under the red biplane (which now has a landing gear) so now I have one less piece to worry about getting sucked in the vacuum cleaner.I realize this particular set is a re-issue of set number 10199 from 2009, and that might have upset some die-hard Lego fans, but since did not have the chance to purchase that set six years ago, I'm glad Lego decided to produce an upgraded version of it. I hope to see some other Winter Village re-issues in the future years, but I also hope there will be completely new and wonderful additions to the theme in order to please those who already have the older versions.
Let me start by saying I love this set! I understand the frustration of collectors who already own the previous version. But, the re-release worked to my personal advantage. After building LEGO sets all the time as a kid, I took a long pause from the hobby. Now that I'm back, I'm happy LEGO released a newer version of this set because I didn't want to overpay for the older, retired version. The look and feel of this set works so well with the other winter sets I own (Santa's Workshop and Winter Village Market). Every year, around this time, I like to stage the sets in a common area of the house. So, this set was a "must have" for me. I enjoyed the building of the set as there were a few techniques I hadn't used before, some of which were challenging to a first-timer but worth-while once complete.I gave a bad rating to the playability of the set but that's only because I don't build/use my sets for play. That being said, I don't see how a child would be able to do as much with this set as they would with the Toy Machine and Reindeer of Santa's Workshop or the Carousel of the Winter Village Market. So, if playability is your thing, this set probably isn't for you.I also gave the value for money a 4 out of 5 because of the price increase from last year's set. Sure there are 15 more pieces but there were several points in this build where I felt like the pieces were only added to drive the piece count, and ultimately the price, up. For example, there are 7 white 1x1 plates which are added to the awning at the end. These seemed unnecessary to me.All in all this is a nice set and is perfect for any collector of the winter sets who doesn't already have the previous version.
