I'm not sure if the top floor is supposed to be a living space for the owner, but if thats the case it doesnt have a bathroom or kitchen facilities! The top floor of the townhouse is a bit of a mess as well, as the back half simply becomes a balcony instead of a good size space that could have been used for a bathroom, and would have made more logical sense.The backside of this set is a real negative, and it has very little detail, just a little garden and some steps on the townhouse. If you compare the back to a set like the Diner, then it is pretty lacking in depth and detail.There are some other glaring negatives about this set, the basement could have easily been one brick higher in height, as the minifigures are too tall to fit properly inside, and the townhouse overall is a very short building. Some of the building techniques and structure decisions on both rooves of the buildings left me puzzled and dissapointed, and they are also structurely unsound in places.The tree in this set has seen a lot of negative reaction, and while it is a cool build, it does take up a lot of room, and has you commiting to a autumn season for the set.Overall, it is a modest addition to the modular collection, and is still worth picking up if you are a fan of the series. It is however without its flaws in several areas.Pros:+ Strong exterior design+ Some strong and detailed interior builds+ Some interesting building techniques+ Very colourful+ Having two seperate buildings gives you options on where to place them in a cityCons:- Strange choices in structural design- Doesn't really add anything massively important to a city- Lacking in detail in some areas- Autumn design may not blend well with other modulars- The tree is overly large and hides the bookshop a bit too much- Back of the set is sparse with little features

When I first saw the box art I kept thinking of buildings I've seen in my hometown. It looked like a nice, quite slice from the city. And the build did not disappoint.I haven't bought or built a Lego set in nearly 15 years, and with each one I build now I'm impressed by the amount of milage they get out of every piece. A lot of creativity and talent at Lego, and it shows in this set. From the stonework, to the bay window, and even how they connect every room, I couldn't help but smile thinking how much fun the people who designed this must have had.I won't spoil much, as part of the fun for me is seeing how they use pieces in clever ways, but one thing that surprised me was how they used skeleton legs to make the rooftop guardrail on top of Birch Books. Before the release of this kit, I had been out of the modular building game since the Parisian Restaurant. I took one look at the Bookshop and knew this was a must have for the collection. When the set arrived in the mail, the build did not disappoint. The two building setup made this a great kit to build side by side with a friend. So, i've got the Diner, Assembly Square and the restaurant and when i saw the bookshop, I did love the look of it, but overall this kit left me feeling underwhelmed.Firstly the good. It looks brilliant and i love the use of colour and the way it goes together and you can separate the two buildings so you can put your street together. the design is nice and i love the bookshelves in the book shop and the town house looks amazing inside However...There are A LOT of bags which makes the thing simpler, but this is supposed to be an expert build, and it feels like the instructions bulk out what is a very simple product with a lot of bricks. The diner is better value and much more interesting.If the price was nearer £100 I'm sure that i wouldn't feel as aggrieved by the build of this product. but for £150, its just too much for what you get.Additional things. as mentioned by others, the basement is too small to stand up a character(seriously, it's one extra row of bricks) and for a bit of fun you could of added a skeleton or a mouse character (my little boy who is 5 thought of this and we did it from other packs we have kicking around!), there is also little out of the back, where others had a bin or something. My kids did this with me and lost interest quickly whereas the other kids they spent hours looking at the detail.As someone who came a bit late to the creator expert street, can you bring back some of the old kits, I'd love the bank or the town hall as they look truly awesome(and the bank was only £100)I deliberately avoided the garage due to the price and the complaints it was too small, i don't think i'll buy another one unless the price comes down.
Thank you, Lego Quality Control, for being so proactive. When I opened the box, the first bag was a small, unnumbered one, with 13 identical light gray posts. I looked at the back of the instruction manual, and saw that there are 13 pieces of #4211389 in this set. As I started building the set, it became clear that these were replacement parts for the ones in the numbered bags, because those parts were the wrong shade of light gray – way too light compared with all the other sizes colored light gray. Thanks for recognizing the problem and addressing it from the start.This is a nice set, architecturally consistent with most of the other buildings in the series. Nonetheless, this is a great addition to the modular building series.

We took our time, knowing we had plenty of spare time to occupy. My Wife built the bookshop and I made the town house. These now sit at opposite ends of our modular street layout, which is in the form of an elongated rectangle. Kudos to Lego for making this set flexible and possible to split that way. We loved the concept, and we very much like the 'kerb appeal' of both buildings. Visually they are very pleasing from the outside. However, and you knew it was coming, there are issues with the interiors of both.Starting with my town house, I thought the interior layout was very simple and unimaginative. The dresser was nicely done, but I just could work out what the upside down thing hanging inside it was meant to be. This couple are enjoying a nice cup of tea, but don't even seen to have a cooker or kettle to heat the water. I installed a cooker, sink and drainer, with overhead extractor hood by removing one of the draw units of the dresser and moving the fire place two nubbles forward. I also added a tiled floor for the kitchen area, and some more pieces of furniture. This all took some fidgeting. But the biggest issue was the lack of a bathroom and toilet. So my town house has a scrap built wet room and toilet extension at the back with a solar roof light. I found the coat hooks also interfered with the basement door, so I moved that forward too and put a radiator underneath it. In the basement I also added a furnace, a washing machine and lots of storage boxes. The mouse trap was a nice touch though. The single bedroom is quite cute, but I still added a wardrobe, a small radiator by the bed and turned the picture into a TV on a stand. The balcony was a little dull too, so that got more plants, a rain shelter above the door, and finally some drain pipes. These additions from my spares boxes have made this the house I think it could and should have been. Credit where it is due, the staircase going up, turning and over the way down to the basement is well thought through.The bookshop seems to lack books. That's a fundamental problem. I really expected more shelves, they could so easily have been incorporated into the walls. And we didn't like the shelf outside, so that got moved inside. Again the spares boxes came to the fore, making more shelving. The two biggest issues are the mezzanine and the attic. The mezzanine is really a bit of a cheat, it is not tall enough for a mini figure. All it would have taken was one more layer of bricks (a similar criticism could be leveled about the basement in the town house). And the attic. Why is there a bed up there? That makes no sense. It could easily have been the owner's office with a simple desk and chair and some cabinets, or a sofa and some more books. Instead we chose to use some of the bed pieces to make a large sort of bean bag style seat. We also dropped the clock to make room for more book shelves, but will use that elsewhere in our display as it's a nice piece. On the plus side, we love the chameleon and the winding staircases are brilliantly made and look fantastic. Finally, I have to say that the door to Birch Books came with a scratch on it, but we covered that up with an 'open' sign sticker at a jaunty angle.Overall this was not a challenging build, and it felt like a missed opportunity. We've had to invest quite a lot of tinkering time to make it better, and what it could have been. I applaud the concept, and the visuals, but the detail was a little lacking and both buildings could easily have been bigger (deeper) without breaking the brick bank.
I am a huge fan of the modular builds so it was a no brainer for me to get this one when I saw it. Especially as before I started being obsessed with Lego I was an avid reader - definitely past tense as I haven't picked a book up for about 3 months now which is so not me. Especially as before I started being obsessed with Lego I was an avid reader - definitely past tense as I haven't picked a book up for about 3 months now which is so not me. Definitely lots of that going on with this build.First off the external looks of this set are excellent and I even like that pesky Birch Tree (although I would have liked a set of optional green "leaves" for it instead of it being permanentily autumn). Nice to have an actual residence next to the store instead of just retail outlets, depending on how you display your modulars you could separate them out as they just Technic pin together.The internal stairs in the Bookshop are built, which I always enjoy. Yes, it is repetitive but something soothing about doing the same motions again and again to produce a finished look. They also look better finished than the premoulded ones.Even better there are NO STICKERS! I feel only half happy with this set. The reason being, I wish this set had been a stand-alone building of the bookshop rather than compromising so much by adding a second building. The compromises are pretty sever, especially for the teal townhouse, which is lacking a bathroom, a kitchen and the basement is more of a crawl space. This is suppose to be a home, but lacks the basic necessities of a house.The bookshop itself suffers from the same disappointing compromises as the bookshop, but on top of not having a bathroom or a kitchen, the bookshop suffers from a lack of books and bookshelves.I like how the bookshop exterior building looks and the colors. The teal seems to really clash with the warm colors of the bookshop.The build techniques are fine and the set was enjoyable to build.I love bookshops, and I got this set because of that love. But I DON'T love this set. I would had loved this set if the designers didn't make any compromises by just sticking to one building, the bookshop. I would had loved to had seen a fully realized bookshop with at least two isles of bookshelves, glass cabinets displaying rare books, a bathroom, and a backroom or office. This set is such a missed opportunity, as I have seen builders who purchased two of these sets to built a full bookshop building. I'm not going to double dip for something the designers should had done in the first place though.
This set was the first one my partner had ever purchased and it was so much fun it got them absolutely addicted to Lego. Each building - the house and the adjoining bookshop - are split between two sets of instructions so you and a friend or partner can build two buildings at the same time and join them at the end. Each building took about 5 hours (some of that was waiting for the other builder to finish) and the entire process was a whole lot of fun. So many parts would leave you confused as to what you're making until the very last piece reveals that you were making a fancy little kitchen cupboard the whole time.10/10 and also has the ability to connect to other creator series sets to make a whole street!
If you want a nice display piece, a building that slides into any city/town setting, or for a friend, this set is an optimal pick. I absolutely fell in love with this set. This was a Christmas gift from ages ago, but I never realized just how AWESOME this set is set out to be. It's warm color from the Bookshop itself, and the Apartment's blue color scheme is so great. Some of the building techniques are clever, like using black sausage pieces for the rim of the tree's base, and the use of a fuzzy minifigure boa/scarf piece for the bird's nest. Getting those leaf pieces in bright oranges and yellows are so fun and autumn-y, and those little interiors that have tons of fun details. If you don't have this building in your modular collection, what are you waiting for?
