Another good Winter Village set

I have all the Winter Village sets - they make a wonderful collection especially now that Lego has produced white base plates. This is a middle-ranker, and is the third in the fantasy sub-genre, the other two Santa's Workshop and Gingerbread House being among the finest Lego sets period. While any criticism is only relative, my problems are several. First, I love Lego boxes and have a huge collection but this one's awful black presentation is the worst Lego presentation I have ever seen. It also omits the invaluable list of pieces included. The inappropriate black follows through to the booklet, which is on glossy black paper making it difficult to read and poor to handle. As for the set, the four elves have the same green body - how more interesting were they when they first appeared for Santa's Workshop, in stripy blue on light blue, ink blue on red, jeans and Christmas red on green. Every one of them looks better than this generic green. As per normal, the roof is tricky and comes apart easily. The lights are a bit garish compared to the just-so-perfect lights in the legendary Santa's Workshop. The best feature is the triple-bed and the way it tosses the elves out at wakey-wakey time (triggered by the clock - how clever!)One more thing - this set is definitely suitable for anyone above 12. Lego has changed from giving meaningful age guidelines to "marketing for adults" which is their Coke-zero moment. Presumably the black goes with it.

A great Lego set! Really cute set with several neat features like a light that illuminates the inside; a little lever to "dump" the elves out of bed, "time to get up and get to work!"; a great chimney with an integrated waffle-maker! My seven-year old and I have enjoyed putting this together leading up to Christmas. He "admires" it every day!

For this price point (too high by $20 IMHO), I cant think of any reason why four distinctly different elves couldn't have been included. For all that I found lacking, or in the case of the black instruction book—awful—i did have a good time building this set, and am enjoying playing around with it.

Great addition to Christmas Lego sets
28 November 2020

I was so excited when I saw this year’s Christmas Lego set - the Elf Workshop. It was built by my 7 year old son - who isn’t a whizz at Lego (except the chimney which I built as he wanted a surprise about the waffle maker) so it is definitely not an 18+ build. It has some great features - my son loved the balcony with a telescope and the elves falling out of the bunk beds. I love the hobbit style front door and we both love the waffle maker. It would have more playability if the rooms were slightly larger. It’s a bit tight to move the elf figures around. Would have preferred more difference between the four elves who look very similar. The roof was much easier to build and attach compared to last year’s gingerbread house. And perfect to go on our hot chocolate bar alongside our gingerbread Lego house and our gingerbread cookie jar.Ps Lego please avoid a black background in the instructions booklet - it’s impossible to read some of it and I’m sure it doesn’t pass essential disability access requirements.

Great multi age project!
21 October 2020

I should say at the outset that I am 73 years old and have never made anything from Legos. The Clubhouse was purchased for my grandsons, who visit often, ages 6 - 10. The intent was for them to build it while at my house as a fun activity. Since the age range for the build was 18+, it seemed to make sense to begin the project myself so I could help them if necessary. I started with section 2 and enjoyed it so much I had to force myself to stop at the end of that stage. TOTALLY ADDICTIVE!! It was super as a multi age project. The 6 year old was able to do stage 1 almost entirely by himself. He needed just a little help with attaching a couple of the smaller pieces. The older boys worked together and completed sections 3 and 4 in about 1 1/2 hours with no help from me ... MoreI should say at the outset that I am 73 years old and have never made anything from Legos. I finished up section 5 after they left and could not be happier. The little house is adorable! It has cute working parts and even a light that you can turn on. I have put the completed project in a box for now but will bring it out again after Thanksgiving. I am sure this will be a perennial favorite for many Christmases to come. Great Job Lego!!!

Great set, terrible shipping
8 January 2023

The set itself is wonderful. It's a great addition to my Christmas Legos. What is not great is how Best Buy ships Legos. This was a set I could not buy at the store and had to have it shipped and when I did receive it the box was crushed and damaged. This isn't the first time Best Buy has burned me on shipping Legos but I thought I'd give them another chance. I kept the set because I know it's a hard one to find but I don't think Best Buy realizes that Legos are collectables and should be treated with more respect when shipping especially when $50 and above for them. Again, the set is fantastic, but beware of Best Buy's shipping.

Nice addition with caveats

I usually buy the annual LEGO Holiday set. My wife and I have been building the holiday sets each year for Christmas. We disassemble them after the holiday season and sometimes our grandkids get involved in rebuilding them.My wife built this set and while the result is a beautiful addition to the collection, the Elf Club House is more of a display piece rather than play piece. It seems that with each new model, LEGO is adding incredible detail which makes the final result look stunning but also adds tons of small 1x1 parts which are easily lost and can be quite frustrating to assemble.I had to help my wife at several steps throughout the build in part because the instruction books printed on black background obscuring the already poor contrast of LEGO colors. ... MoreI usually buy the annual LEGO Holiday set. Even in the previous generation of instructions printed on lighter blue, color accuracy and contrast were poor. With black background it is almost impossible to make out certain colors and placement. Bring back the old blue books, please! This set, as others in the holiday series, are not very playable for kids under 10. The sets are fragile with parts easily coming apart (i.e.: "breaking") with the kids frustrated because they can't reassemble them. Increasingly we find building these sets for the holidays are for display only which is very frustrating for younger kids since they want to play with them; it is LEGO after all. :)

Super cute but manual hard to read and pieces not properly bagged
28 December 2021

We love Legos in our house but this build was super frustrating for my 17yr old daughter and me. First, the manual has an all-black background which makes it hard to identify colors and see details on some of the bricks. The worst part was the bags. Every set we've had in the past has had numbered bags that corresponded to the order of build in the manual. Not this set. Not only did the bags not correspond to what the manual indicated, but we also had several pieces that were missing. Fortunately, we have a stash of pieces from the decades of collecting and we were able to improvise but for what we spent on this set, I expected all of the pieces to be there. We had several extra pieces - probably 30-40 - which was also weird. I wouldn't recommend this set at $100. ... MoreWe love Legos in our house but this build was super frustrating for my 17yr old daughter and me. This is such a fun set that highlights the adorable elf minifigures. I love their new costume design and the red scarf. The little computer build is one of the highlights, so incredibly cute and perfect for an adult set since only adults will recognize these old-time computers :-D I did swap out the "keyboard" for a printed one from my own collection. The pirate ship, plane and piano builds are fun as well. The Christmas tree is one of my favorite tree designs yet. I love the colors, sand green and dark tan. The roof design was very smart and looks great. It makes displaying next to the Gingerbread House cohesive. The waffles are a really great printed piece. And the deer has to be mentioned, so happy for one of those. I was a little disappointed at first that there was only one deer, BUT it's not a deer for Santa's sleigh, it's just for the little elf sleigh so it's perfect. I do hope more will show up in other sets to collect more. While considered one of the adult sets, playability for the kiddos is excellent. I gave this four stars because I don't care for the dark instruction book. I will say that the darker colored bricks were hidden by the dark pages and it threw me a bit from time to time trying to figure out what color I was supposed to use. For example book 1, the tree build starts with a dark green plate, but then the next instruction showed two green plates. I completely missed seeing the dark green plate was actually underneath the green ones. Seeing the difference between tan and gold was tough at times, too. And a transparent piece is always tough to print, but I was searching for a gray one and when I couldn't find one, I discovered it was just transparent. I understand wanting to match the dark boxes and their nice design, but LEGO, I say stick with what works. When putting your sets together, the instructions are important which in turns means that seeing them well is very important for the fun-factor. All in all, another well-done and popular Christmas set!

The Winter Village
19 October 2020

This is a personal opinion of the latest Winter Village edition. It is a nice looking set, as every year it looks fun. But what initially started as a Winter Village has become a sort of fantasy world. I would much more appreciate the Charles Dickens style as the toyshop and bakery. Train and station were nice additions, the fire station was excellent but Santa's workshop was completely out of this style as is this new Elves Clubhouse.I think it is a lot of money for an average set. The wafers and bunkbeds are there, but how many times will these be used as they are on the back of the set.I guess the winter theme is mostly used for display purposes and not for playing. Please have a nice addition to the series next year, a town hall, medieval gatehouse, church ... MoreThis is a personal opinion of the latest Winter Village edition. It is a nice looking set, as every year it looks fun. I would be nice if the aim for the US market wasn't that obvious and the extra Limited Editions that come out every year were also eligible for the European market from the start. Now we can preorder as VIP the new Winter Village set and a couple of weeks later, if we order the set then, we'll receive a free limited edition winter set. What's all that about?
